Humans have memorialized their lost loved ones since the beginning of mankind. The death of a loved one can tear a hole in the fabric of our lives. But given time, we can find

ways to weave the stories, wisdom, and spirits of our departed loved ones into the tapestry of our lives.

John Wayne in a scene from the film “She Wore a Yellow Ribbon.” In the film, the character played by Wayne visits the grave of his departed wife and speaks to her as if she were still alive. The scene illustrates that although death ends life, it does not end our relationship with our loved

ones.

Our brief sojourn on earth is like a rainbow; beautiful, ephemeral, and seemingly conjured out of nothing more substantial than a mixture of sunlight and water vapor.

Rainbows may be transient, but they are glorious precisely because they reflect the eternal light of the sun. The ruins of

Dunluce Castle, perched on the coast of Northern Ireland, are a timeless reminder of the impermanence of life.

Beauty is health food for the soul. There is something about beauty that aligns our spirits to the goodness in life. Beauty can make us feel like we are in the presence of the divine. There are days when the beauty we encounter is so overwhelming that it

seems that God must be an artist and the world his canvas. When we are surrounded by beauty the soul blossoms.

The butterfly is a symbol of hope and transcendence. Sometimes, it can seem like we are caterpillars inching our

way towards some impossibly remote goal. But like the homely caterpillar, each of us contains within ourselves the power of transcending our circumstances. Sometimes, we

must go beyond ourselves, so that we may find a great wind and spread our wings.

“There are so many opportunities in life; it is up to us to grasp them. One step at a time forward, and one small act of kindness towards others, can help us heal ourselves and our fellow travelers. When we transform pain into something positive, then we are fulfilling our highest and most divine potential. In this way, we can help create a brighter world for all.” (excerpted from “Walking Out of Darkness”).
