ABOUT US

The 5DAY Missions model and organization, headquartered in Los Angeles, has been uniquely developed to deliver a high-impact humanitarian relief program in the small space of a typical 5-day workweek.

Our uncommonly intensive methodology benefits communities with medical services, educational programs, local business development, social innovation workshops, art projects, children’s activities, and dialogue to help prevent conflict.

BEIRUT MISSION

The centerpiece of the 5DAY Mission to Beirut 2011 is surgical vision correction and other medical services for indigent and incredibly deserving patients.

We will achieve this in association with local physicians and hospital staff who can help to immediately improve and sustain higher quality care in their community.

Approximately 425,000 registered refugees live in Lebanon.

SURGICAL TEAM

Led by Dr. Paul Dougherty who also gifted his services to UNRWA refugees in Hebron with our core team in September 2010, and plans for Gaza this year.

Paul J. Dougherty, M.D. is an internationally renowned eye surgeon who has helped pioneer many of today's most popular vision correction techniques. He serves as medical director of Los Angeles-based Dougherty Laser Vision, and as assistant clinical instructor of ophthalmology at UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute. He is also one of just 40 surgeons worldwide to serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Refractive Surgery - the official peer-reviewed refractive surgery specialty journal published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). ••• Dr. Dougherty was among the first laser surgeons in the United States to perform LASIK on an investigational basis before it was approved by the FDA in 1995. Since then, he has performed nearly 25,000 laser procedures. ••• Dr. Dougherty is also an authority on cataract surgery and other non-laser surgical techniques, including the new generation of implantable contact and intraocular lenses (ICLs/IOLs). He was instrumental in the development of the Staar Visian ICL, serving as a principal investigator for the FDA study that began in 1999. Dougherty Laser Vision is a designated Staar Visian ICL Center of Excellence, and has implanted more ICLs than virtually any practice in the US. Dr. Dougherty was also one of the first US surgeons to implant the Crystalens, which was approved by the FDA in 2004 as the first truly accommodating implantable lens to restore clear vision for objects from near to far. ••• Dr. Dougherty graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania, the nation's oldest university. He then attended UCLA Medical School, where he graduated first in his class. He completed his residency at UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute, where he conducted award-winning research on the then nascent field of laser vision correction. He next studied corneal and refractive surgery as a fellow at the Phillips Eye Institute in Minneapolis, where he trained with Dr. Richard Lindstrom. ••• Dr. Dougherty's research has been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. He routinely teaches advanced surgical techniques, and lectures worldwide at universities and major ophthalmology conferences. ••• In January 1997, Dr. Dougherty became one of the first ophthalmologists in the US to have LASIK performed on his own eyes. Since then, he has had perfect vision without glasses or contacts. As a surgeon who experienced the LASIK procedure first-hand, Dr. Dougherty can relate to his patients' concerns with unique insight and perspective. Dr. Dougherty is also a Co-Founder of 5DAY Missions.

“My Vision is Global Vision. My profession of vision correction surgery has afforded me many extraordinary experiences and introduced me to many wonderful patients. Because of this, I want to give something of lasting value back to the world.”

SURGERY: RECENT MISSION

In September of 2010, 5DAY team members worked in concert with UNRWA (The United Nations Relief and Works Organization) and Project-Peace on Earth (a 5DAY alliance) to gift 40 cataract surgeries to visually impaired Palestinian refugees in the West Bank city of Hebron.

We were fortunate enough to work with the staff and facilities of St. John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem, and we could not have achieved all that we did without the generous support of the Bank of Palestine and a long list of local partners.

DOCUMENTARY

Video documentation in the 5DAY Mission style communicates the need for our actions, the emotional gravity of it all, and the unrealized potential to so dramatically change lives in only a matter of days.

The resulting short-form documentary also provides partners and sponsors with compelling, co-branded and Hollywood-quality media for promotional purposes.
