1 So Jacob moved on and came to the land of the eastern people.

400 miles later

2 He saw in the field a well with three flocks of sheep lying beside it, because the flocks were watered from that well. Now a large stone covered the mouth of the well. 3 When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone off the mouth of the well and water the sheep. Then they would put the stone back in its place over the well’s mouth.

Infatuation begins

4 Jacob asked them, “My brothers, where are you from?” They replied, “We’re from Haran.” 5

So he said to them, “Do you know Laban, the grandson of Nahor?” “We know him,” they said. 6 “Is he well?” Jacob asked. They replied, “He is well. Now look, here comes his daughter Rachel with the sheep.”

Scheming to be alone?

7 Then Jacob said, “Since it is still the middle of the day, it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. You should water the sheep and then go and let them graze some more.” 8 “We can’t,” they said, “until all the flocks are gathered and the stone is rolled off the mouth of the well. Then we water the sheep.”

Is he trying to get them to leave? There is either a contract by the owner on how to use the wellOr, they want to stay around to look at Rachel

Showing off for the girl

9 While he was still speaking with them, Rachel arrived with her father’s sheep, for she was tending them. 10 When Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of his uncle Laban, and the sheep of his uncle Laban, he went over and rolled the stone off the mouth of the well and watered the sheep of his uncle Laban.

Lazybones of the tents becomes the Macho Man. Amazing what a pretty girl can do to a guy. What happened to the Momma’s boy?

Moving In for the kiss

11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel and began to weep loudly. 12 When Jacob explained to Rachel that he was a relative of her father and the son of Rebekah, she ran and told her father.

Only place in the Bible where a man kisses a woman other than his mother or wife.Seems to be more than a mere “holy kiss”.First case of “kissing cousins”.She ran to tell daddy. Think she told about the kiss?

Jacob Meets his match

13 When Laban heard this news about Jacob, his sister’s son, he rushed out to meet him. He embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban how he was related to him. 14 Then Laban said to him, “You are indeed my own flesh and blood.” So Jacob stayed with him for a month.

Daughter for wages?

15 Then Laban said to Jacob, “Should you work for me for nothing because you are my relative? Tell me what your wages should be.” 16 (Now Laban had two daughters; the older one was named Leah, and the younger one Rachel. 17

Leah’s eyes were tender, but Rachel had a lovely figure and beautiful appearance.)

Leah means Cow.Rachel means Ewe Lamb.Rachel was the knock-out.

What will a man do for a woman?

18 Since Jacob had fallen in love with Rachel, he said, “I’ll serve you seven years in exchange for your younger daughter Rachel.” 19 Laban replied, “I’d rather give her to you than to another man. Stay with me.”

Time passes fast when you’re in love

20 So Jacob worked for seven years to acquire Rachel. But they seemed like only a few days to him because his love for her was so great.

Jacob became a workaholic for Rachel. But love can make one vulnerable.

The Trickster gets Tricked

21 Finally Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my time of service is up. I want to have marital relations with her.” 22 So Laban invited all the people of that place and prepared a feast. 23 In the evening he brought his daughter Leah to Jacob, and Jacob had marital relations with her. 24 (Laban gave his female servant Zilpah to his daughter Leah to be her servant.)

“I want to have marital relations with her.” Lit. “I want to go into her.” Let’s hear one of you guys say that to your father-in-law.Move over Jerry Springer and Howard Stern. Laban has you guys beat on mean. Why do it? GREED!

Page 14: The trickster is tricked

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!

25 In the morning Jacob discovered it was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, “What in the world have you done to me! Didn’t I work for you in exchange for Rachel? Why have you tricked me?” 26 “It is not our custom here,” Laban replied, “to give the younger daughter in marriage before the firstborn. 27 Complete my older daughter’s bridal week. Then we will give you the younger one too, in exchange for seven more years of work.”

Laban was mean to: Jacob, Leah, and Rachel.Where did Jacob get his scheming? His Mom? Where did Rebecca get it? It’s all in the family.

Jacob fulfills his contract!

28 Jacob did as Laban said. When Jacob completed Leah’s bridal week, Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife. 29 (Labangave his female servant Bilhah to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.) 30 Jacob had marital relations with Rachel as well. He loved Rachel more than Leah, so he worked for Laban for seven more years.

Lessons

• An encounter with God can:

– Change our motivation:

• From fear and running away

• To excited anticipation of what God has planned before us

– move us from a lazybones among the tents to a person with purpose and goals.

Page 17: The trickster is tricked

Lessons:

• The love of a woman can:

– Cause a man to act like someone he isn’t to impress the girl.

– Change a man – from the lazy man to an industrious, hard worker.

– Make it worth the wait.

– Cause him to put up with the in-laws.

Page 18: The trickster is tricked

Lessons:

• There is payback for deceptions– Jacob deceived Isaac, taking advantage of his

blindness. Laban deceived Jacob’s inability to see in the dark tent.

– Jacob pretended to be the older brother, and now Laban tricked him by replacing the younger with the older sister.

– Esau was forced to live with the results of Jacob’s deception; now Jacob is forced to live with the results of Laban’s deception.

Page 19: The trickster is tricked

Lessons:

• Favoritism has consequences:

– Isaac’s favoritism of Esau and Rebecca's favoritism of Joseph caused family division.

– Jacob’s greater love of Rachael over Leah will result in immense family division.

Bible Heroes have faults for a reason

The wise man learns as much from the faults and mistakes of others (and themselves) as

from their virtues and successes.

God’s Grace is Greater than our sins

Romans 11:32–36 32 For God has consigned all people to disobedience so that he may show

mercy to them all. 33 Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how

fathomless his ways! 34 For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his

counselor? 35 Or who has first given to God, that God needs to repay him? 36 For from him and

through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever! Amen. Do you think you’re any better than Jacob?
