• Two prophecies show the Messiah as Son. – Jehovah calls Messiah, “My Son”…

Ps. 2:7; Acts 13:33; Romans 1:4– In 2 Samuel 7:14a there is an immediate

application to Solomon.• But the Messiah would also descend from

David and would receive the ultimate throne and kingdom. Mt. 1:1; Mark 10:47; John 7:42

• But no angel is ever called “My son”.

Jesus is the “Firstborn,” Who Jesus is the “Firstborn,” Who Receives WorshipReceives Worship

• Jesus is described as the “firstborn”.

• This term here means first in priority/importance, not born first.– God used this term to describe Israel over the

world. Exodus 4:22– Used by God to refer to David the youngest of

eight. Psalm 89:20, 27– It is used of Jesus to stress His preeminence

over creation. Colossians 1:15-18

• When Jesus came into the world the angels were to worship Him. Heb. 1:6– Angels refused to be worshiped – Rev. 22:8-9– Peter refused worship. Acts 10:25-26

• Yet, Jesus received worship.– Mt. 2:11; 8:2; 9:18; 14:33; 15:25; Jn. 9:38;

Mt. 28:9, 17; Luke 24:52

• Jesus is worthy of worship, because He is…

• Angels are simply for the service of God. Heb. 1:14, 7

• But the Son is God Himself, enthroned and anointed! Psalm 45:6-7; Heb. 1:8, 3a– We note the deity of Jesus.

• He reigns over an everlasting kingdom with righteousness. Daniel 2:44; Luke 1:33, 26– Paul and John wrote about this kingdom.

Col. 1:13; Rev. 1:9; Heb. 1:9; 2:11; 3:1

• Jesus is Yahweh, “Jehovah”! Ps. 102:25-27

• This Psalm uses God’s covenant name and applies it here to Jesus. Exodus 3:13-14; Heb. 1:9

• Jesus is the Eternal Creator. He created everything in the beginning. Heb. 1:10, 2c– John and Paul write about this… John 1:3;

Colossians 1:16-17

• He is also eternal and unchangeable. Heb. 1:11-12; 2 Peter 3:10-12; Heb. 13:8

Jesus is the “Sovereign”Jesus is the “Sovereign”

• No angel is invited to sit at God’s right hand.

• But Jesus the Son is invited. Heb. 1:13-14; Psalm 110:1– This refers to Christ’s Messianic reign.

Hebrews 1:3; Acts 2:34-36; 1 Peter 3:22

• Angels are but ministering spirits. Heb. 1:14

• They minister for those who will inherit salvation. Lk. 1:11-38; Mt. 13:36-43;18:10

• Very forcefully the Hebrews writer has shown that Jesus is superior to the angels.
