In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and

was baptized by John in the Jordan.

And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw

the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a

dove on him.

And a voice came from heaven, "You are my

Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the

wilderness.

He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by

Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the

angels waited on him.

was arrested,

Jesus came to

Galilee,

proclaiming the

good news of God,

and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of

God has come near; repent, and believe in the good

news."

Top Level

Jesus needed the wilderness time before he could

understand what God was saying to him. This

probably applies to us as well

Your Experience of the

Wilderness

Talk about a bad time in the wilderness. When

was the worst moment you had to do with being a

long way from food / water / shelter / your mum’s

cooking?

How did it make you feel?

Wilderness vs Suffering

Wilderness is often used in the Bible to represent

the chaotic, dangerous place where God was

absent and the wild beasts prowled about, looking

for something to eat.

How is wilderness like suffering? How is it

different?

Your Wilderness

Experiences

When have you experienced the wilderness of

suffering or alienation in your life?

What did it teach you?

How did it transform you?

Travelling Light

Walking the Camino – like suffering – taught me the

importance of travelling light. I carry a lot of stuff with

me – extra books and clothes, assumptions,

attachments – that make it harder for me to reach my

goal. In suffering, I learned to get down to the

essentials. Sometimes perhaps you can hear God

whispering your name.

A Question

What are some things that are holding you back,

weighing you down?

Page 18: The Lessons of the Wilderness

Lent

Lent is a sort of portable wilderness. You can learn

some of the lessons of the wilderness – of

suffering – at a lower price.

Prayer

Lord come with me into

my wilderness. Speak

to my preoccupied

heart. Reveal to me

where addiction to

power, possession and

gratification choke my

path. Only when I am

free from these can I be

good news to others.
