Objective of Lesson

1. How does God view our singing

2. What is the focus of our singing

3. Who is our audience

How does God view our singing

• Hebrews 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

• Praise is the natural response to God interacting in our lives.

• "fruit of the lips," is a Hebraism, meaning what the lips produce; that is, words

Praise a natural response to GOD

• Ezra 3:11 And they sang together responsively in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endures forever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.

Fruit of the lips

• Hosea 14:2 Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we offer the sacrifices of our lips.

• The lips and tongue produce words…and words have meaning.

Four Reasons for praise1. Chosen generation

2. Royal priesthood

3. A holy nation

4. A people for His own

• 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own; that you should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:

Examples of Praise

• Psalms 9:11 Sing praises to the LORD, who dwells in Zion: declare among the people his doings.

• Isaiah 42:12 Let them give glory unto the LORD, and declare his praise in the coastlands.

Singing comforts the soul

• James 5:13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.

• 1 Samuel 16:23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took a harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

What is the focus of our singing

• Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you are called in one body; and be thankful.

• Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

What is the focus of our singing

• Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, in which is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

• Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

• Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God, even the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Jonathan and David

• 1 Samuel 18:4 And Jonathan removed the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his belt.

• 1 Samuel 19:2 But Jonathan Saul's son delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeks to kill you: now therefore, I pray you, take heed to yourself until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide yourself:

Jonathan and David

• 2 Samuel 1:26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant have you been unto me: your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.
