Atonement

The Bible uses a lot of different words to describe different aspects of our salvation. Today we will look at a new word that is closely linked with forgiveness. Atonement.

a) The word for atonement in the Old Testament is the Hebrew word ‘kaphar’ and it simply means ‘to cover’, ‘to cancel’ or ‘to pacify’.

b) In the New Testament which was written in Greek there are several words that are used.

Hilasmos = Propitiation - To appease or pacify angerKatallage = Reconciliation - To restore a broken relationship

How does God look at every unbeliever?

• DEAD (spiritually)

• Not just lost or unfulfilled, not just morally degraded or diseased they are DEAD; lifeless.– Luke 15:24 – Luke 15:32

Primary Influence in an Unbeliever’s Life

• John 8:43-44

• 2 Cor. 4:4

• Ephes. 2:2

Preoccupation of those who walk according to the world system?

• Ephes. 2:3

Wrath• What does wrath mean? A ragging war • What does children of wrath imply? God’s anger

burns against those who are not His children.– John 3:36 – Romans 5:10

Sins• What about our sins? How do we receive forgiveness

from our sins?– Hebrews 9:22

Page 6: The Basis For Forgiveness

A. Atonement in the Old Testament.

• What did Adam make to cover himself? Fig leaves; man’s way.

• Genesis 3:21 And the Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

• What is implied by animal skins? Blood had to be shed

Page 7: The Basis For Forgiveness

The Principle of Atonement • The Bible is very clear that the punishment for sin is death. This

means that in order for God to forgive sin death must take place.

• Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

• Because the life of the body is in the blood God demanded that blood be shed in order for His anger against sin to be appeased.

• The blood that was shed had to be untainted, pure, wholesome, uncontaminated and spotless of sin in order for it to be acceptable to God.

2. The Promise of Atonement

• God loved man very much and knowing that man was stained with sin from birth, and could never offer an acceptable sacrifice, He made a way of escape. God promised man that one day a Deliverer would come and He would pay for the sins of the world, making it possible for man to be reunited in fellowship with God once again.

• Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise Him on the heel."

3. The Picture of Atonement

• The Passover: • What were they suppose to sacrifice?• What type of lamb?• What were they suppose to do with the

lamb?• What were they suppose to do with the

blood?• After applying the blood on the door posts

what were they to do?• What did God promise them if they followed

these instructions?

Questions?

• Was Man Saved Because of the Sacrifices?– Man was not saved by offering sacrifices; he was

saved by believing and placing all his faith in the Word of God concerning the Deliverer that would come. They called Him their Messiah.

– 1 Samuel 15:22– Genesis 15:6 Then he believed in the Lord; and He

reckoned it to him as righteousness.

Page 12: The Basis For Forgiveness

Questions?• If the blood of animals was not accepted as payment for sin

how could God forgive anyone when the Deliverer had not yet come?

• Remember the word for atonement in the Old Testament means ‘to cover’ and this is exactly what God did. He covered the sins of those that put all their trust in Him and His Word. The book of Romans tells us that God left the sins of believers in the Old Testament unpunished until the time of the Deliverer.

– Romans 3:25 – 1 John 2:2

Page 13: The Basis For Forgiveness

What does this mean?• For God sent Christ Jesus to take the punishment for

our sins and to end all God's anger against us. He used Christ's blood and our faith as the means of saving us from his wrath. In this way he was being entirely fair, even though he did not punish those who sinned in former times. For he was looking forward to the time when Christ would come and take away those sins.

• This means that when the Deliverer came He would pay for the sins of the whole world not just in His time but all the sin that had been or would be committed in the whole of human history.

B. Atonement in the New Testament

• Today we live in the New Testament times and instead of looking forward to the coming of the Messiah. We look back to the time that He did come just as God had promised. We now know that the Deliverer was Jesus Christ the Son of God.

• Now we will take a look at what Jesus did and compare it to the Passover in the Old Testament.

Page 15: The Basis For Forgiveness

The Lamb of God

• Jesus is called the Lamb of God. – John 1:29 - The next day he saw Jesus coming

to him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

• Jesus was male and perfect in every way. – Matthew 3:17 and behold, a voice out of the

heavens, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased."

– 1 John 3:5 And you know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.

Page 16: The Basis For Forgiveness

• Jesus was put to death during the Passover. – Mark 14:12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when

the Passover lamb was being sacrificed, His disciples said to Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?“

– John 18:28 They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into

the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium in order that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.

• Jesus blood has kept us safe by placing us in

Christ. – Ephes. 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly

were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

• Jesus has provided a way of salvation for all who believe.

– John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. • Jesus was the final sacrifice, the one that all the

others had been pointing to. He was the last lamb that needed to die. In those last dying moments upon the cross Jesus made a fantastic statement.

The Lamb of God

Page 18: The Basis For Forgiveness

– John 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His head, and gave up His spirit.

• Jesus was the final sacrifice, the one that all the others had been pointing to. He was the last lamb that needed to die. In those last dying moments upon the cross Jesus made a fantastic statement.

• This amazing claim then rings throughout the entire New Testament. Salvation’s work is now complete. The Deliverer has finally come. Sin has been paid for in full. There remains nothing to be done.

What Hebrews Say

• Jesus was the one true sacrifice – Hebrews 9:26-28

• Jesus blood was the one true payment for sin– Hebrews 9:12-14

• Jesus dealt with all our sin at the cross – Hebrews 10:12

• Jesus has cleansed us of our sin forever –– Hebrews 10:14

Page 20: The Basis For Forgiveness

Justification• If you have placed all of your faith in Jesus Christ as

your Passover Lamb, then God has accepted Jesus in your place. He has punished Jesus for your sin and washed your sins and your guilt away.

• The Bible calls this wonderful truth ‘Justification’ and it simply means ‘to be proclaimed righteous’. Many simply focus on forgiveness for sins but our salvation is far more than that. God took all your sin and placed it on His Son Jesus and then He took the righteousness of His Son Jesus and placed it on you!

So when God looks at you He sees the righteousness of Jesus Christ!

Page 21: The Basis For Forgiveness

As we finish today, we want all of you to thank God for the wonderful forgiveness that

He has provided. Then examine your lives and see if there is any sin that God is asking

you to turn away from.
