Matthew 5:1-11 Luke 6:17-26

1 When Jesus saw the crowds, 17 He came down with themhe went up the mountain; and stood on a level place,

with a great crowd of his disciplesand a great multitude of peoplefrom Judea, all Judea, Jerusalemand the coast of Tyre and Sidon.18They had come to hear himand to be healed from their diseases;and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.19 And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from himand he healed all of them.

and after he sat down,his disciples came to him. 20 Then he looked up at his disciples2 Then he began to speak,and taught them, saying, and said,3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

4 Blessed are those who mourn,for they will be comforted.

|<21b Blessed are you who weep now,for you will laugh.

5 Blessed are the meek,for they will inherit the earth.6 Blessed are those who hungerand thirst for righeousnessfor they will be filled

|<21a Blessed are you who are hungry now,for you will be filled

7 Blessed are the merciful,for they will receive mercy.8 Blessed are the pure in heart,for they will see God.9 Blessed are the peacemakers,for they will be called the children of God.10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake,for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.11 Blessed are you when people revile you,and persecute you,and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

22 Blessed are you when people hate you,and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame youon account of the Son of Man

Rejoice and be glad,for your reward is great in the heavens, for in the same way, they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,for surely your reward is great in heaven;for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.

(cf. Luke 6:20) 24 But woe to you who are rich,for you have received your consolation.

(cf. Luke 6:21a) |<25 Woe to you who are full now,for you will be hungry.

(cf. Luke 6:21b) |<Woe to you who are laughing now,for you will mourn and weep.

(cf. Luke 6:23) 26 Woe to you when all speak well of you,

for that is what their ancestors did to the the false prophets.
