1 John 2:1-6

1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4 The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

The “evangelical” answerGreat Command (Matthew 22:37-39, NIV)‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’… ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Great Commission(Matthew 28:19-20, NIV)“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...”

Non-Negotiables:- grounded in a personal, costly relationship with Jesus, a seeking Savior- results in a new identity in Jesus- guided by God’s Word- transformed by the Holy Spirit’s power- developed through a lifelong process of becoming human- fully trained in the communities of faith- living out in everyday real world

The Gospel:

1. God’s holiness: “God is Holy.” 2. The depth of our sin: “I am a

sinner.” 3. The complete sufficiency of

Christ’s atoning work to make us fully acceptable before the Father: “Jesus is the Savior of sinners” (Gospel Transformation).

Page 18: Sun27 Dec2009 Annual Rpt09-10

Where we go wrong…

The Gospel is NOT the A-B-C “For in the Gospel a

righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith’” (Romans 1:17; Habakkuk 2:4).

The Gospel is A-Z

Page 19: Sun27 Dec2009 Annual Rpt09-10

THE CENTRALITY OF THE GOSPEL: CHRISTOLOGY IS OUR THEOLOGY

The Gospel changes everything. The Gospel is meant to inform and

transform all things. Who Jesus is and what He has done

provides both the motive and the means to true Christian spirituality.

“The Gospel is to be applied to every area of thinking, feeling, relating, working, and behaving.”

Page 20: Sun27 Dec2009 Annual Rpt09-10

Counterfeit Gospels Nominalism / Formalism “By Name Only

Christianity” Doctrinalism / Intellectualism Antinomianism “A license to sin.” Passivism “Let go and let God.” Moralism / Legalism “Just Try Harder.” Sensationalism / Activism Mysticism: The gospel is reduced to

dynamic emotional and spiritual experiences.

Pragmatism: The gospel is reduced to the healing of needs.

Social-ism: The gospel is reduced to a network of fulfilling Christian relationships.

Page 21: Sun27 Dec2009 Annual Rpt09-10

Some differences After the sermon, discussion etc., do

you leave with one more thing to do or with greater appreciation for what Christ has done?

Did the song, message or discussion, leave you with greater faith toward Jesus power to save?

What motivation was offered? Were you taken to rules and principles and a call to be “more committed” or were you pointed to the cross for inspiration?

Page 22: Sun27 Dec2009 Annual Rpt09-10

Some Differences If there was a conviction of sin, were

you left in it? Were you encouraged to do something about it – or to look to what Christ has done for you?

Did the speaker, author, fellow believer display humility? Did he freely critique others? Was there harshness in tone?

Did you leave with a greater awareness of the Savior's glory, as you seek to work out your salvation in fear and trembling?

Why am I telling you all this?

•13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:13-18)

2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Apostle’s CreedI believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator

of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our

Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended to hell. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of the saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN.
