James Smith, a colonial settler came to Long Island in the 1600's and made a deal with the Indians that were settled here. At first the land was going to be his own for farming purposes until years later it became a town. But the bet that Smith made was that he was going to ride a bull starting from beach on the Long Island Sound, south and then back again North till he reached another point of the Sound. And all the land in-between was to be his. The Indians at first laughed at his bet, because no one could ride a bull for that long. But Smith's bull was special, he had raised it and tamed it. From Sunrise to Sunset he rode the bull and won the bet. The bull that Smith rode around on lies at the end of Main St. at the bridge for the Nissequogue River. The Nissequogue's were a group of the first Indians that were in that area, which is now Smithtown as well as the Nesconset's, which is also a part of Smithtown as well. Directly south to the Nissequougue's groups of Christians settled, naming that part of Smithtown; St. James.
