YIELD/SUBMIT = HUPOTASSO
(GREEK – NEW TESTAMENT)
To subject oneself, to place in a lower position, to give
up one’s rights, to voluntary and lovingly yield
to another person.
HUPOTASSO is always used of two
equals –never of an unequal
to a superior.
Yield to each other as you would to Christ.
(Ephesians 5:21 – New Century Version)
Honor Christ by submitting to each other.
(Ephesians 5:21 – Living Bible)
Honor Christ and put others first. (Ephesians 5:21 – Contemporary English Version)
When we fully yield to Christ, we are able to fully
yield to each other
Don’t just pretend that you love others: really love them. Hate
what is wrong. Stand on the side of the good. Love each other with
affection and take delight in honoring each other . . .
When God’s children are in need, you be the one to help them out . .
. If someone mistreats you, don’t
curse him; pray that God will bless him. When others are happy, be
happy with them.
If they are sad, share their sorrow. Work happily together. Don’t try to
act big . . . And don’t think you know it all! Never pay back evil for evil . . . Don’t quarrel with anyone. Be at peace with everyone, just as
much as possible.
Dear friends, never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God, for
he has said that he will repay those who deserve it . . . Instead,
feed your enemy if he is hungry.
If he is thirsty give him something to drink and you will be “heaping
coals of fire on his head.” In other
words, he will feel ashamed of himself for
what he has done to you.
Don’t let evil get the upper hand, but conquer evil by doing good. (Romans 12:9-21 – Living Bible)
Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble,
thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for
your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. (Philippians 2:3-4 – New Living
Translation)
WHEN I YIELD MYSELF TO JESUS AND TO OTHERS . .
.
I give up my right to judge
Stop judging, and you will never be judged. Stop condemning, and
you will never be condemned. Forgive, and
you will be forgiven. (Luke 6:37 – God’s Word
Translation)
WHEN I YIELD MYSELF TO JESUS AND TO OTHERS . .
.
I give up my right to hold a grudge
Love is not irritable or touchy. It does not hold grudges and will
hardly even notice when others do it wrong . . .
Banish bitterness, rage and anger, shouting and slander, and any and all malicious thoughts—these are poison. (1 Cor. 13:5, Eph. 4:31 – Good News
Bible/The Voice)
WHEN I YIELD MYSELF TO JESUS AND TO OTHERS . .
.
I give up my right to seek revenge
Don’t say, “I’ll do to him what he did to me! I’ll repay him for what he did!” . . . Don’t pay back evil with evil, cursing with cursing;
instead, pay back with a blessing . . .
Never take revenge, instead let God's anger do it. For the scripture
says, “I will take revenge, I will pay
back, says the Lord. (Prov. 24:29/1 Pet. 3:8-9/Rom. 12:19 – The Voice/Good News
Bible)
WHEN I YIELD MYSELF TO JESUS AND TO OTHERS . .
.
I give up my right to gossip
Don’t tear down another person with your words. Instead, keep the
peace, and be considerate. Be truly humble toward everyone . . .
Don’t let even one rotten word seep out of your mouths.
Instead, offer only fresh words that build others up when they need it most. That way your good words will communicate grace to those
who hear them. (Titus 3:2/Ephesians 4:29 – The
Voice)
WHEN I YIELD MYSELF TO JESUS AND TO OTHERS . .
.
I give up my right to always have my own way
Love is very patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never
boastful or proud, never haughty or selfish
or rude. Love does not demand its own way . . . let’s keep each step in perfect sync with God’s Spirit.
This will happen when we set aside our self-interests and work
together to create true community instead of a culture consumed by
provocation, pride, and envy. (1 Corinthians 13:4-5, Galatians 5:25-26 – Living Bible/The
Voice)
WHEN I YIELD MYSELF TO JESUS AND TO OTHERS . .
.
I give up my right to think I am superior
Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves . . . Do
not pay attention to what humans value. Humans only care about the
external appearance,
but the Lord considers what’s on the inside . . .We’re not putting
ourselves in a league with those who boast
that they’re our superiors. We wouldn’t dare do that . . . all this
comparing, grading and competing miss the point.
(Romans 12:3, 2 Corinthians 10:12, 1 Samuel 16:7 – New Living Translation/The Message/The Voice)
WHEN I YIELD MYSELF TO JESUS AND TO OTHERS . .

I give up my right to refuse to love & pray
You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its
unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies.
Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst.
When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the energies of prayer, for then you are working
out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God
does. He gives his best—
the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and
nasty. If all you do is love the lovable,
do you expect a bonus? (Matthew 5:44 – The Message)
Let’s Pray
