EFFECTS

By way of review, Last time we looked atThe gospel of God in the OT

Let's read Romans 2:1–16

Romans 2:1, 14:4-13, Judge Righteously, Judging Others

• NAU Romans 2:1 Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.

• NAU Romans 14:4 Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

• NAU 1 Corinthians 5:12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church?

Romans 2:1, 14:4-13, Judge Righteously, Judging Others

• Jesus said in;• NAU Matthew 7:1 "Do not judge so that you will not

be judged.• NAU John 7:24 "Do not judge according to

appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”• NAU 1 Corinthians 4:5 Therefore do not go on

passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men's hearts; and then each man's praise will come to him from God.

Romans 2:5, Universalism, Why Doesn't God Save Everyone, Salvation Condition

• NAU Romans 2:5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

• NAU Matthew 23:37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

• NAU Ephesians 4:17 So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;

Romans 2:5Stubborn Unrepentant Hearts

• Dr. Henry Morris wrote, “No matter what evidence is presented for the existence of God, it is always possible for the unbeliever to counter with some objection or with another question. No argument or combination of arguments can ever convince someone who does not want to submit to God. Even if he is completely overpowered and silenced by the arguments, he will still be of an unbelieving heart, and this is what really counts. "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.” Nevertheless, the evidence is there! For a person who sincerely desires the truth and is willing to believe, there is an abundance of proof concerning the fact of God and the character of God. The evidence is such as either to completely satisfy an open mind and heart or else to irrevocably condemn an unbelieving heart. For the latter, the only acceptable evidence may prove to be the heavy hand of God's chastening judgments, and even this may only harden it yet more.

Romans 2:5 Stubborn People

• Romans 2:5, has the only NT use of the word “stubbornness,” and there are no NT uses in the NAU of the words “ stubborn, stubbornly, or stubborn-minded”

Romans 2:7, Perseverance

• NAU Romans 2:7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life;

• Luke 8:15 "But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.

Romans 2:11No Partiality With God

• NAU Romans 2:11 For there is no partiality with God.• NAU Deuteronomy 10:17 "For the LORD your God is the God of

gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.

• NAU Acts 10:34…God is not one to show partiality, (respecter of persons, KJV)

• NAU Deuteronomy 1:17 'You shall not show partiality in judgment…

• NAU Job 13:10 "He will surely reprove you If you secretly show partiality.

• NAU James 2:9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

Romans 2:12, Judged By The Law• Romans 2:12 For all who have sinned without the Law will

also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law;

• Rabbi Zusya wisely said, “In the world to come I shall not be asked, "Why were you not Moses?" I shall be asked, "Why were you not Zusya?”

• Matthew 7:2 "For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.

• John 3:18 "He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

• 1 Corinthians 11:31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged.

Romans 2:13, Responsibility To God Confidence Before God

• NAU Romans 2:13 for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified.

• The most important thought I ever had was that of my individual responsibility to God. Daniel Webster

• Job 4:17 'Can mankind be just before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker?

• Acts 23:1 Paul, looking intently at the Council, said, "Brethren, I have lived my life with a perfectly good conscience before God up to this day.“

• 1 John 3:21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;

Rom. 2:14-15, Common Grace

• NAU Romans 2:14 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do

instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law

to themselves, 15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their

hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately

accusing or else defending them, 16 on the day when, according to my

gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus. [Hebrews

1:1-3]

Rom. 2:14-15, Common Grace• NAU Acts 17:26 and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the

face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their

habitation, 27 that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find

Him, though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for in Him we live and move and exist,

as even some of your own poets have said, 'For we also are His children.' 29 "Being then

the children of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or

stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man. 30 "Therefore having overlooked

the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should

repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness

through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him

from the dead."

Rom. 2:14, Common Grace• NAU Matthew 5:45 …He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the

good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.• God has ordained the family unit for all people. • NAU Matthew 7:11 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good

gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!

• NAU Romans 13:1 …the governing authorities…are established by God.

• “The old British preacher Martyn Lloyd Jones described common grace in the best way I have found: “Common grace is the term applied to those general blessings which God imparts to all men and women indiscriminately as He pleases, not only to His own people (Christians), but to all men and women, according to His own will”.” http://www.bridgesh.com/2011/12/what-is-common-grace/

• Henry Ward Beecher said, “The sun does not shine for a few trees and flowers, but for the wide world’s joy.”

Romans 2:15 Engraved Upon Their Heart

• NAU Romans 2:15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them,

• NAU Jeremiah 17:1 The sin of Judah is written down with an iron stylus; With a diamond point it is engraved upon the tablet of their heart And on the horns of their altars,

Romans 2:15, God Alone Is Good

• Romans 2:15 …the Law written in their hearts, their conscience …

• God alone is good, the only non-sinner, who could write the perfect Law, and program our consciences.

• Mark 10:18 And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.

• Psalm 5:4 For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness; No evil dwells with You.

• 3 John 1:11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.

• NAU Romans 2:24 For "THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF YOU," just as it is written.

• “A. It was against the law for the Jews to speak or write the Lord’s name except for one day each year when they spoke it 7 times in a Temple ceremony called Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

• When they wrote His name they used 4 initials to represent it. They were translated into English as JHVH. The King James translators put LORD, all in caps, where the initials appeared in the Hebrew text. Somewhere along the way vowels from Elohim, which means God, and Adonai, which means Lord, were added to the initials forming Jehovah. Later it was determined that since in the Hebrew language the four initials are pronounced Yodh, He, Waw, and He, Yahweh is a more accurate pronunciation of God’s name.

• But the truth is no one alive today knows God’s actual name. After the Temple was destroyed the Yom Kippur ceremony changed and they no longer spoke it. Scholars estimate it was eventually lost to the memory of man in about 300 AD. Today Jesus is the name above all names (Phil. 2:9-11).”

Let's read Romans 2:25–29

Romans 2:25–29Infant Baptism/Circumcision Is Of No Value

• This passage is used by many to justify infant baptism. They say that infant baptism is the equivalent of Old Testament circumcision. Circumcision was the sign of belonging to the bloodline of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and being under the Law of Moses. This put the infant under the law of Moses. Baptism is a public display of the fact that you have trusted in Jesus Christ, received the Holy Spirit and, been born again. It has nothing to do with circumcision. However, if their unbiblical assumption were true, then they are placing their infants under the law, and they better make sure they keep the entire 613 Commandments perfectly. Infant baptism is just Roman Catholic mysticism regurgitated by Protestants. Paul says in

Romans 2:15, Who Shapes Our Conscience?

• March 18, 2013• NAU Romans 2:15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them,• • WHO SHAPES OUR CONSCIENCE? [Excerpts]• • What determines our values in today's fast-changing world? Who imprints its values on our conscience? Do parents? Teachers? The Media? Or our omnipotent God?•

It depends! In former times, the Christian conscience played a leading role in American schools and families....We live in a new era! The Bible-trained conscience has largely been replaced by contrary guidelines that twist, scorn, or deny God's truth. Some still point to a conscience, but most people redefine it to match today's cultural values and personal inclinations. These examples illustrate the diversity:

• Social Conscience: "Our conscience is not the vessel of eternal verities [Biblical truth]. It grows with our social life, and a new social condition means a radical change in conscience" (Walter Lippmann, A Preface to Politics, Mitchell Kennerley, New York and London, 1914).

• National Conscience: "Our concept of governing is...a concept deeply rooted in a set of beliefs firmly etched in the national conscience..." (Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, Democratic Convention Keynote Address: "Who Then Will Speak for the Common Good?", New York, New York, July 12, 1976).

• Bypassing the Conscience: "No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls" ("Biography for Ingmar Bergman" athttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000005/bio).

• Mocking the Conscience: "What a man calls his 'conscience' is merely the mental action that follows a sentimental reaction after too much wine or love" (Helen Rowland, A Guide to Men (1922) athttp://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Helen_Rowland#A_Guide_to_Men_.281922.29).

• Cultural Conscience: (Christian or not): "The conscience of children is formed by the influences that surround them..." ("The Conscience of Children," at National Character Education Center).• In stark contrast to the above, Martin Luther dared take a stand against the reign of a corrupt and oppressive church back in April 1521. For his uncompromising faith, he was declared an

outlaw on May 25. You may remember his words: "...it is neither safe nor wise to do anything against conscience. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen" ("English Bible History: Martin Luther" at http://www.greatsite.com/timeline-english-bible-history/martin-luther.html).

• • Back in the 1930s, Adolph Hitler was determined to quench that Bible-trained conscience. It clashed with his Nazi agenda. In two separate speeches he said: "Your child belongs to us

already.... What are you? You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the next camp. In a short time they will know nothing else but this community" (1933). "This new Reich will give its youth to no one, but will itself take youth and give to youth its own education and its own upbringing" (1937) (William L. Shirer, The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany, 1959). And now, in the fading light of the Biblical conscience, America is headed in the same direction.

•True liberty depends on our relationship with our heavenly Father! When He draws us to Himself and fills us with His Spirit, His guidelines are stamped on our conscience as we "feed on" His Word and heed His "voice." But those who ignore that "voice" will be left with the ever-changing values of an increasingly corrupt world system. What would you choose? "Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck" (1 Timothy 1:19).

Romans 2:16, Judge Righteously• Question: "What does the Bible mean that we are not to judge others?"• Answer: Jesus’ command not to judge others could be the most widely quoted of His sayings, even though it is almost

invariably quoted in complete disregard of its context. Here is Jesus’ statement: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged” (Matthew 7:1). Many people use this verse in an attempt to silence their critics, interpreting Jesus’ meaning as “You don’t have the right tell me I’m wrong.” Taken in isolation, Jesus’ command “Do not judge” does indeed seem to preclude all negative assessments. However, there is much more to the passage than those three words.

• The Bible’s command that we not judge others does not mean we cannot show discernment. Immediately after Jesus says, “Do not judge,” He says, “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs” (Matthew 7:6). A little later in the same sermon, He says, “Watch out for false prophets. . . . By their fruit you will recognize them” (verses 15–16). How are we to discern who are the “dogs” and “pigs” and “false prophets” unless we have the ability to make a judgment call on doctrines and deeds? Jesus is giving us permission to tell right from wrong.

• Also, the Bible’s command that we not judge others does not mean all actions are equally moral or that truth is relative. The Bible clearly teaches that truth is objective, eternal, and inseparable from God’s character. Anything that contradicts the truth is a lie—but, of course, to call something a “lie” is to pass judgment. To call adultery or murder a sin is to likewise to pass judgment—but it’s also to agree with God. When Jesus said not to judge others, He did not mean that no one can identify sin for what it is, based on God’s definition of sin.

• And the Bible’s command that we not judge others does not mean there should be no mechanism for dealing with sin. The Bible has a whole book entitled Judges. The judges in the Old Testament were raised up by God Himself (Judges 2:18). The modern judicial system, including its judges, is a necessary part of society. In saying, “Do not judge,” Jesus was not saying, “Anything goes.”

• Elsewhere, Jesus gives a direct command to judge: “Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly” (John 7:24). Here we have a clue as to the right type of judgment versus the wrong type. Taking this verse and some others, we can put together a description of the sinful type of judgment:

• Superficial judgment is wrong. Passing judgment on someone based solely on appearances is sinful (John 7:24). It is foolish to jump to conclusions before investigating the facts (Proverbs 18:13). Simon the Pharisee passed judgment on a woman based on her appearance and reputation, but he could not see that the woman had been forgiven; Simon thus drew Jesus’ rebuke for his unrighteous judgment (Luke 7:36–50).

• Hypocritical judgment is wrong. Jesus’ command not to judge others in Matthew 7:1 is preceded by comparisons to hypocrites (Matthew 6:2, 5, 16) and followed by a warning against hypocrisy (Matthew 7:3–5). When we point out the sin of others while we ourselves commit the same sin, we condemn ourselves (Romans 2:1).

• Harsh, unforgiving judgment is wrong. We are “always to be gentle toward everyone” (Titus 3:2). It is the merciful who will be shown mercy (Matthew 5:7), and, as Jesus warned, “In the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Matthew 7:2).

• Self-righteous judgment is wrong. We are called to humility, and “God opposes the proud” (James 4:6). The Pharisee in Jesus’ parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector was confident in his own righteousness and from that proud position judged the publican; however, God sees the heart and refused to forgive the Pharisee’s sin (Luke 18:9–14).

• Untrue judgment is wrong. The Bible clearly forbids bearing false witness (Proverbs 19:5). “Slander no one” (Titus 3:2).

• Christians are often accused of “judging” or intolerance when they speak out against sin. But opposing sin is not wrong. Holding aloft the standard of righteousness naturally defines unrighteousness and draws the slings and arrows of those who choose sin over godliness. John the Baptist incurred the ire of Herodias when he spoke out against her adultery with Herod (Mark 6:18–19). She eventually silenced John, but she could not silence the truth (Isaiah 40:8).

• Believers are warned against judging others unfairly or unrighteously, but Jesus commends “right judgment” (John 7:24, ESV). We are to be discerning (Colossians 1:9; 1 Thessalonians 5:21). We are to preach the whole counsel of God, including the Bible’s teaching on sin (Acts 20:27; 2 Timothy 4:2). We are to gently confront erring brothers or sisters in Christ (Galatians 6:1). We are to practice church discipline (Matthew 18:15–17). We are to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

Mark 3:5 Lamentations 3:65 1 John 3:17-21 2 Peter 2:14 Hebrews 3:10 Colossians 3:12-22 Ephesians 4:18 2 Corinthians 3:15 Romans 10:9

Romans 2:5, Stubborn Unrepentant Hearts • No matter what evidence is presented for the existence of God, it is always possible for the

unbeliever to counter with some objection or with another question. No argument or combination of arguments can ever convince someone who does not want to submit to God. Even if he is completely overpowered and silenced by the arguments, he will still be of an unbelieving heart, and this is what really counts. "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still."

No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.”

• In effect, he was saying even Jewish people have to be born again to be acceptable to God. This statement supports the Lord’s teaching that no one can come to the Father but through Him (John 14:6). Jew or Gentile, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless he is born again (John 3:3).
