Another name for Revelation is Apocalypse. The word ‘apocalypse’ has come to signify a terrifying end-of-the-world scenario ……

… but ‘apocalypse’ simply translates as ‘unveiling’.

This interpretation proposes that what is being unveiled is our personal and collective interrelationship with a living, evolving, cosmic intelligence.

1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass: and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: 1:2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things that are written therein: for the time is at hand.

For the purpose of this interpretation, if we take Revelation ‘at its word’, since John wrote the words ‘at hand’ sometime in the first Century CE we can infer that the timescale in this text is not referring to a personal timescale but to time understood from a collective evolutionary perspective.

1:9 I, John, both your brother and companion in tribulation ... was on the isle that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

There is nothing in the Wiki write-up to suggest the symbolism in Revelation has any connection with astrology – but the fact he is on Patmos is edifying …

So might John have been banished to Patmos because he was into astrology?

Adela Collins a theologian at the University of Notre Dame writes: "Early tradition says that John was banished to Patmos by the Roman authorities. This tradition is credible because banishment was a common punishment used during the Imperial period for a number of offenses. Among such offenses were the practices of magic and astrology.

And Plini: ‘Three of the islands in the Sporades were places where political offenders were banished." (Natural History 4.69-70; Tacitus Annals 4.30) 7

These are the two great people whose work has provided me with the information that enabled me to interpret Revelation’s enigmatic symbolism. C G Jung is pictured with his diagram of the Anima Mundi published in his book AION, and Liz Greene is the Jungian astrologer who produced the model (based on Jung’s diagram) on her right.

Liz has listed the cognitive functions long identified with the four elements of the Anima Mundi. Her inspiration is to draw attention to mixed functions where the elements merge.

Anima Mundi, ψυχή κόσμου, translates as Mundi/world Anima/alive (as in animate and animal), also called World Mind or World Soul.

Here is Jung’s diagram representing the Anima Mundi. I have added the Elements. Planet Earth is the only planet that we have found (so far) that supplies the perfect conditions that separate the elements so that they exist independently. On this diagram the Four Elements are arranged according to gravity. This is the ‘female’ arrangement. There is a ’male’ arrangement that arranges them according to the seasons (see Galen).

The ancient Chinese text called I Ching, or YiJing, is also involved in this elucidation. These stacks of lines are called hexagrams, they develop naturally like a plant and are read from the bottom up.

Hexagram 1, The Creative, is made up of all positive lines: Hexagram 2, The Receptive, is made up of all negative lines. The last two hexagrams, hexagram number 63, After Completion, and 64, Before Completion, display a different sort of order – they alternate.

E = mcJung called the I Ching a Chinese science. He understood that yang and yin are representative of energy and mass. (See essay, Synchronicity and Relativity) . Einstein's equation was new and exciting at the time Jung’s friend Wilhelm was introducing his translation of this ancient Text.

The binary system, through the influence of Leibniz (who owned an I Ching), George Boole, Sanders Peirce and Claude Shannon, underpins the working computer. An electric current is either on or off. This is signified by noughts and ones. Computer Basics. Time Life Books, p 30 -36.

Leibniz identified 0 with the void and 1 with God. The ancients identified yang with ‘light’, yin with ‘dark’: the Creative with the ‘opening of the gates’, the Receptive with the ‘closing of the gates’. The binary system is a language that works as a very effective on/off electric switching device, a quality recognised by Peirce.

On the next slide I present the model that will allow us to interpret Revelation’s text.

On the left you will see the Anima Mundi (again). I have turned it 90 degrees and I have added the signs of the Zodiac where their qualities apply in accordance with Liz’s positioning of the interconnected elements i.e. Pisces = intuitive-feeling, Aries intuitive-thinking, Taurus sensual-feeling etc. Check out Anima Mundi on Slideshare or at the website www.chrissyphilp.com.

On the right you will see our familiar Zodiac. The Zodiac allows us to tell Cosmic Time just as the hands on a clock tell everyday time. It’s a clock with planets acting as hands.

The Zodiac defines the masculine archetype: the I Ching calls this The Creative Heaven. The title Heaven couldn’t be more pertinent -The Zodiac is, of course, an ancient model of the heavens. Round and round go the hands of the clock.

The symbol for Earth is a cross. North South East and West – up down side to side. An additional symbol for Mother Earth (mater ‘matter’ ) is the cube. The I Ching gives this hexagram the title The Receptive Earth.

Together these two primal archetypes offer us a sophisticated space-time model. (Don’t worry about understanding all of it at this point, I will refer to the various symbols as we go along).

Look! The Receptive feminine model, the Anima Mundi, includes all yin/negative signs on one side, and all yang/positive signs on the other. Just like Mother Earth she gives birth to both male and female progeny.

This is another way of drawing up the same pair. Based on the I Ching’s three types of change it illustrates additional logic. NONCHANGE is the unchanging background against which we monitor change – like the face of a clock. CYCLIC CHANGE shows a hand (the Sun) on the move. Its cycle is repetitive. On The Zodiac Cyclic Change models the season. Spring, summer, autumn, winter. On the Anima Mundi (here titled The Golden City), it draws all the archetypal energies into the centre – this is an incarnation point we experience as ‘being here now’.SEQUENTIAL CHANGE. You need an access to memory to be aware of this type of change. Summer 2011 is followed by summer 2012. Sequential Change on the physical female arrangement models the brain.

In verse 1:11 of Revelation the speaker tells us who he is ..

Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and Omega is the last.

This is a lamp holder in the form of The Standard of Constantine. He saw this image in a dream. It is called The Labarum of Constantine: The CHI RHO.

The letters XP (CH), signify Christos.

It contains the Greek letters ALPHA and OMEGA. For Constantine they represent GOD.

And here you can see Alpha and Omega on the male Creative Heaven model! I can explain ... This, WE KNOW, is a cosmic clock which symbolises, not only the beginning and the end of time, but also the beginning and the end of each passing moment. You can see that I have included the positive and negative attributes of the signs as positive and negative yin/yang lines within the Zodiac (just as I did on The Receptive Earth model). The way the Zodiac is arranged, in alternate signs, makes up the LAST two hexagrams in the ancient Chinese Book of Changes: ‘Before’ and ‘After Completion’!

Because, on the Zodiac, the positive and negative signs alternate, whichever way you turn the Zodiac it is always ‘Before’ and ‘After Completion’, but if you place it according to the Ptolemaic Order, with Leo and Cancer at the base, the ruling lines mark the equinoxes, the end of Summer and the beginning of Spring. Alpha and Omega can be interpreted as meaning TIME and alluding to The Creative Heaven.

And here is another important consideration - the Zodiac doesn’t just model Time. When the hands are added (the planets) it models time as a process, time with purpose, time with meaning. If we think of The Creative Heaven as ‘software’ - as distinct from The Receptive Earth - ‘hardware’ - we can see that using an ancient language designed to interpret these symbols this chart is allowing us to glimpse the meaning of the Cosmic Software at this particular time and place.

This is the equinox 2012 chart set for Bath, the city where Uranus was discovered. I was working on this presentation in Bath at this moment.

And re ‘time’. Is this another clue?

Now we have got that ambiguity sussed this voice of Alpha and Omega (that can be equated not only with Time and Heaven, but also with computer software), commands John to write a letter to each of the seven churches of Asia ...

... a request that appears reasonable until we learn in the next chapter that these letters are to be addressed, not to the seven churches themselves, but to the ‘angels’ of the seven churches.

As the voice dictates the messages one by one I will follow the order of the planets on the Ptolemaic Order. I am choosing the Sun as the primary angel rather than the Moon. I have reasons, the first is that without an energy source we are knackered before we begin. The second is explained as you get to know the DNA type pattern on this model ….

The Sun’s gravity could be said to ‘hold’ the stars if we translate stars to mean planets. So here, as ruler of Leo, it takes the place of the first angel of the first church.

The Menorah.

The light in the centre, which is especially distinguished, would signify the sun, as the chief of the planets.

And just in case you are still unsure, here is the Jewish Menorah. (John is thought by many scholars to be a Palestinian Jew who wrote in Greek.) And what did John say? This angel walks .. in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; .. Well here he is – the light in the centre.

It is a well known saying that evil cannot bear the light of day.

OH NO!

If the speaker is Time, then the Sun is certainly to by applauded for it rises and sets and rises and sets. It is absolutely reliable.

Don’t panic …. All is well.

I can explain the meaning behind this accusation thanks to a email I received when I was contemplating this verse, an email that came by way of Barbara, Jana, and Robert Fitzgerald and then onto me. This is what Mellen Thomas Benedict writes about his/her ‘Death Experience’:

‘This is how Godhead is exploring God's Self - through you. So ask your questions, do your searching. You will find your Self and you will find God in that Self, because it is only the Self. … We are part of the same soul fractaling out in many creative directions, but still the same. Now I look at every human being that I ever see, and I see a soul mate, my soul mate, the one I have always been looking for. .. The Sun comes second on this female model. This is where a new physical ‘living’ being ‘appears’ from out of the womb (the Neptune/Jupiter SOURCE) into the waiting arms of Moon Mother and Father Sun.

The Sun is a star – it gives light . Space must be full of sunlight. So why is space bright black?

Light needs some thing to reflect off …. The Moon reflects light!

The Chinese call the light, YANG, and the matter that receives and reflects the light, YIN. The Moon is the primary symbol of the all-important YIN.

Add the Sun’s energy (spirit) to dead matter and we have ‘living matter’.

2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) …

Revelation tells us that the Moon is hard pressed and poor (she has no light of her own she reflects the light of the Sun), but she is actually rich. The Moon is rich in loving feelings. Energy expressed through the Moon is instinctively nurturing, sensitively responsive to the physical needs of others an oasis of security expanding and contracting as she goes through her phases.

She is the milk of human kindness.

2:10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried;

In Part Two you will learn that the age of Cancer/Capricorn was the Semitic Age, ruled by Saturn (an authoritative father God) and the protective, family-conscious (tribal) Moon.

The gift promised to the Sun is to eat the food supplied by the Moon's sign Cancer, while the Moon gets to wear Leo’s crown.

To feel is to care, and to care is to suffer. If we defend ourselves against suffering - and the Moon is concerned with the powerful instinctive reaction of defence - then caring is obstructed.

The Moon is symbolised on this Receptive Earth model by the RULING second line of the hexagram The Receptive.

I Ching. 6 in the second place means: ‘Straight square, great, without purpose, yet nothing remains unfurthered.’

On this female model LIFE can come into existence only after a new body has been constructedin the Neptune/Jupiter womb.

THE HEART She is the ruling planet on this material model. She is pure ‘feeling’. In combination with her partner, the Sun, she is ‘heart’. On the brain she marks the position of the Cerebellum; the primal brain; the ‘unconscious’.

Our physical emotional being is centred, here, in our heart.

Together with it’s positive/yang partner, the Sun, they make up the yin/yang connection LIFE. On this male, Creative model life comes first.

Energy is yang, and the caring that results from the flow when it takes on the burden of living flesh is Receptive, yin. The Creative flowing in conjunction with its complementary partner, the Receptive, is experienced by us as mother love, the instinct to care, to nurture and protect .

MERCURY is the MESSENGER OF THE GODS, ruler of the sign Gemini, complementary ruler of the sign Virgo. We don’t think of Mercury as aggressive, but the Geminian Dioscuri ruled the Roman Cavalry who rode out brandishing swords, and Virgo is known to be uncomfortably critical. Mercury at this period of history ruled Virgo as well as Gemini.

Clever Mercury is the God of thieves and liars and .. yes .. journalism. And let me see .. um .. advertising. Later on we see that Saturn (old Satan) has a lot to do with business. Mercury, the messenger, is god of the agora, the marketplace.

Mercury is the part of our brain on the Receptive Earth model that we call the Motor Cortex.

Satan, astrological Saturn, stands for AUTHORITY; here he is ruling the Forebrain where ‘identity’ resides. Saturn stands for secular rules and regulations. They are corrupt if they take no account of the heart.

The Motor Cortex sits right up against the Saturnian forebrain. It is all Mind and no Heart. Oooh look at this! .. Somebody has got hurt. HOW INTERESTING !!

Here are some ideas that if passed onto the young by Saturnian authority might constitute a bit of a stumbling block.

If idols are man-made gods, then, working as a team, dexterous Mercury and skilful Virgo can manufacture idols with ease. Here this pair are accused not of making the idols, but eating the food sacrificed to the idols. I suppose Christ did say; ‘Man does not live by bread alone’. Perhaps this refers to us digesting stupid ideas ... but what’s with this fornication?

It was this little man who came up with the irresponsible ‘Derrick’. Do you want him to conceptualise another god for you? He can make a statue of your favourite deity too if you like (Virgo rules craftsman-ship). Just look at these hands! Or he can use Twitter. Easy peesy ... no problemo.

Symbolically this is the tongue that can cut through confusion with Virgoan precision, but which also can injure with criticism or with Geminian gossip and slander.

Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo on the old Ptolemaic Order. Gemini Mercury is concerned with passing around ideas while Virgo Mercury rules libraries, places where our ideas are stored for the benefit of posterity.

I have chosen this amazing picture as I need you to remember this ‘sword’ - it is mentioned again in Part Two in relation to what I interpret as mercurial planetary symbolism.

A white stone is something you can write on – like a virgin (Virgo) sheet of paper - and this is the letter to the angel at Pergamos. Parchement, charta pergamia, derived its name from Pergamos.

So hello everyone. We have familiarised ourselves with the model that will help us understand Rev’s text and we have heard what Alpha and

Omega have to say to the Sun, the Moon, and Mercury. In Part One B we learn what advice Alpha and Omega have to give to

Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

The longer I contemplate these letters the more impressed I am with the wisdom

they contain.
