PROVERBS 10

Proverbs 10:1-2

INTRODUCTION REMARKS

When the Hebrews heard the term “WISDOM” what did they think? When Solomon wrote Proverbs and he used the general term ‘wisdom’ what was the idea that the Hebrew people received?

They understood the meaning to be one whose pattern of life, and lifestyle was in line with Biblical principles, and teaching of scriptures.

It seems today wisdom has the meaning of knowledge. Thus, we need to get all this stuff of education down.

But wisdom is:

The ability to understand who God really is, and what it is that God wants you to do, and you are doing it.

As I have said before:

Until you understand the intent of the Word of God, you can’t live it out in your life.

The purpose I have in mind when I am teaching is to give you the sense of Scripture:

Ezra 7:10 : Ezra arrived in Jerusalem: prepared his heart, mind, soul: to seek the law of God and to do it, and to teach in Israel the statues and judgments of God.

Nehemiah 8:1-6: Ezra brought the law of God before the congregation. To all those who could understand. He read the law first. He prayed unto the Lord. Read it DISTINCTLY.

And gave the SENSE and CAUSED them to understand the reading. Nehemiah 8: 13 To understand the WORDS of the Law. They found what they were to do. Understand : “To turn the mind to:” Deut 32:29, Psalms 41:2, 64:10, Proverbs 16:20, Daniel 9:13

WISDOM: in its last analysis is PERSONAL HOLINESS.

FOOLISHINESS in its last analysis: is PRACTICAL UNHOLINESS.

THE BENEFITS AND DANGERS OF KNOWLEDGE

Charles E. Whisnant, Teacher of Rivers of Joy Baptist Church

If it were not a vital need in every human being, God would not have instructed us to know Scripture.

BENEFITS OF BIBLICAL KNOWLEDGE ARE:

1. Biblical knowledge gives direction to the life. Jeremiah 10:232. Biblical knowledge gives substance to one’s faith3. Biblical knowledge gives stability under pressure. Romans 5:1, 15:4.4. Biblical knowledge gives ability to handle the Word accurately.5. Biblical knowledge equips us to detect and confront error. 1 Timothy 1:3.6. Biblical knowledge gives confidence in one’s daily walk with God. Col 2:2, Psa 119:457. Biblical knowledge filters out our fears and superstitions which tap our inner energy and

immobilize us.

BIBLICAL KNOWLEDGE CAN BE DANGEROUS WHEN:

1. When knowledge lacks biblical support.2. When knowledge becomes an end itself.3. When knowledge isn’t balanced and motivated by love and grace. Romans 144. When knowledge remains theoretical. Col. 1:9, 2 Timothy 3:17

So here is the question we need to ask:

1. What is our final authority?2. When the chips are down, on what do we rely?3. When we seek reasons for what we do, what do we turn to?4. What forms the foundation for our action?

If you stop and think about this, there are varieties of resource of authority that people rely on for what they do and don’t do in terms of pastoral ministry, or spiritual service, or living their life.

1. Escapism2. Cynicism3. Secular Humanism4. Supernaturalism

5. Rationalism6. Traditionalism7. Favoritism
