Recent experience and inspiration• Seaside – This beach in Hythe is personal to me and I visit it at least

once a year, sometimes alone but often with family. • Thoughts about how human life connects and is part of nature.• Thought about the age of sand and pebbles.• How the sea has shaped sand and stones by movement.• How amazingly old all pebbles and grains of sand must be.• Beauty of their simple shapes and also of shells.

Page 3: Project Ideas

• Two very short video clips showing how the constant movement of waves interacts with and shapes the surface of the beach.

• Take a moment to recognise the natural beauty in every second.• Nothing stays exactly the same from moment to moment. The

landscape is constantly changing.

• *play 2 videos*

• This is a much more exotic beach than those in the UK.

• Last years holiday in Bermuda offered very different beachscapes and natural beach objects.

• Could possibly contrast different beaches and natural objects found on them

• Could focus on different light and colour found in each.

• Looking closely at pebbles and shells.

To sum up my beach project idea…

• Amazing how humans are so connected to this planet.• How we all emerged from the same material – stones –

somehow. How? Too mind-blowing!• The similarities between rocks, stones and humans?

I could study human skulls and bones looking for some connection?

• I could look further at fossils.• For example some shells have a skullish/skeleton appearance. • Georgia O’Keefe is an artist I could further research for this

project.• Could develop alone this line.

Regeneration • How all natural life forms including humans are born, grow,

give birth and die. (Life cycle)• Looked closely at summer -> autumn changes – leaf colours,

fruit developing and decaying, leaf skeletons, shells (seaside and snail) old roots, seed pods, dead objects -> I am particularly interested in colour, texture, shape and form.

• Close focus on the life cycle of a hollyhock plant.

Page 10: Project Ideas

• Could develop theme of regeneration as ‘The beauty of death and decay.’

• Could explore further afield than my own local environment eg countryside, woods, farmland etc.

Page 11: Project Ideas

• Artists who could further inspire me for this major project idea; Andy Goldsworthy, Georgia O’Keeffe and other Nature artists.

Fear/ hopes for the future of our planet• Effects of human beings on the planet such as pollution,

destruction of the natural environment, global warming.• Urbanisation - Covering nature with concrete, and littering it with

plastic and rubbish etc. – Yet it is amazing how nature is still managing to survive.

• This internet photo demonstrates how nature fights back!

Page 13: Project Ideas

• Walking to town I observed plants growing in derelicts places, through walls, another great example of how nature fights back! Although would see these sights as ugly, I find them strangely beautiful and hopeful.

• Could develop the project in terms of ‘Nature survives, resists and adapts.’

• Perhaps I could develop a series of work along these lines of hope for the future of the planet.

• Trees always inspire me and I intend to revisit Mondrian’s series of trees for further possible inspiration.
