Overcoming sin in our lives

Having considered sin and its deadly effects we will turn to the scripture for ‘aids or tools or weapons’ to overcome sin in our lives. We will also discuss the saving role that Jesus played and plays now.

Steps to overcoming sinBelief and Baptism

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. [Joh 3:3]

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. [Joh 3:5]

What is Baptism?

Buried with Christ- Rom 6:4 He who is dead is free

from sin. - Rom 6:7

Our old man was crucified with Him - Rom 6:6

The Serpent Buried – The Serpent Crucified – The Serpent is Dead

Walk in newness of lifeWalk the Resurrected Life

If we shared in Jesus' death by being baptized, we will be raised to life with him. - Rom 6:5

The body of sin might be put away, and we might no longer be servants to sin. - Rom 6:6

Living a resurrected life If, then, you were raised

with Christ, seek the things above,

where Christ is sitting at the right of God;

mind the things above, not the things on the earth.

For you died, and your life has been hidden with Christ in God.

Col 3:1-3 Note: Serpent was cursed

to seek things below and eat dust (death)

Tools for overcoming sin Belief and Trust in God

The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. [2Sa 22:3]

Read God’s word Thy word have I hid in mine heart,

that I might not sin against thee. [Psa 119:11]

Prayer Watch and pray, that ye enter not

into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. [Mat 26:41]

Tools for overcoming sin Fight the flesh – resist

Temptations Dearly beloved, I beseech you as

strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; [1Pe 2:11]

Jesus will help Because he himself suffered when

he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. [Heb 2:18]

Tools for overcoming sin Fellowship with the body of Christ – the

Church and keep good company And let us consider one another to provoke

unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. [Heb 10:24-25]

There is no temptation that cannot be overcome

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. [1Co 10:13]

Why did Jesus not sin? Adam and Jesus had

the potential to avoid sin or do sin

Jesus was determined not to serve his own will but God’s

And going forward a little, He fell on His face, praying, and saying, My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will. [Mat 26:39]

Adam is an example of human failureJesus is an example of human success

But God's free gift is not like Adam's offense. For if many people died as the result of one man's offense, how much more have God's grace and the free gift given through the kindness of one man, Jesus Christ, been showered on many people! [Rom 5:15]

Jesus the second Adam This, indeed, is what is

written: "The first man, Adam, became a living being." The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. [1Co 15:45]

Why is Jesus represented by a bronze snake

And even as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. [Joh 3:14-16]

13

Serpent of brassWhat did it signify?

“And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the pole; and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.” [Num 21:9]

Brazen – Strong/Hard Snake on a pole = Defeated

Snake Bronze = overcoming / Strong

Willed (See Jer 15:20, Rev 1:15-16)

Salvation = the brass would reflect the sun and people would see defeat of the serpent from a distance

Page 14: Overcoming sin in our lives

14

Jesus brought salvation to mankind by defeating sin unlike Adam who brought death

Serpent Defeated Rom 8:3 God did by sending his

own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to deal with sin. He condemned sin in the flesh

Jesus overcame unlike Adam He that committeth sin is of

the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. [1Jo 3:8]

Page 15: Overcoming sin in our lives

15

Jesus brought salvation by his obedience - obedience even to the point of deathFollow Jesus i.e. Follow his 'way' of life

In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. [Heb 10:6-7]

By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. [Heb 10:10]

We can be part of this salvation if we listen to Jesus’ words and do the Father’s will:

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. [Mat 7:21]
