MoharramThe beginning of the ISLAMIC year

Page 2: Moharram

This is the first month of the Islamic Calendar and one of the four Sacred Months (al-Ashhur al- Hurum).

Regarding ‘New Year’, it has been mentioned that the Islamic calendar was initiated by Umar (r) to resolve the issue of ‘dates’ to be written on letters. This is a historical fact which has been mentioned to show how and why the hijri calendar started and why Muharram was chosen as the first month of the calendar.

The point to be noted is that Muharram is a sacred month NOT because the grandson of Prophet

Muhammad (saw) was martyred in this month. It is sacred because Allah

made it sacred along with three other months and told us about it in

the Quran.

(Al-Ashhur al- Hurum).

The Sunnah

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (Radiyallahu 'anh) reports that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) arrived in Madinah and found the Jews observing fast on the day of ‘Ashura… They said: "It is the day of great (significance) when Allah delivered Hazrat Musa (AS) and his people and drowned Pharoah and his people, and Musa (‘AS) observed fast out of gratitude. And we also observe it." The Holy Messenger of Allah (pbuh) responded: "We have more right, and we have closer connection with Sayyidina Musa ('Alaihis-Salaam) than you have"; so Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) observed fast (on the day of ‘Ashura) and gave us orders to observe it. [Sahih Bukhari and Muslim]

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (Radiyallahu 'anh) relates that when the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam) said: "If I survive till next year, I will definitely observe fast on the 9th of Muharram (as well)." [Sahih Muslim]

Abu Qatada (ra) relates that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said that the fast on the 10th of Muharram atones for the sins of the preceding year. [Sahih Muslim]

Abu Huraira (ra) reports that the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said that after Ramadan, the fasts of Muharram have the greatest excellence. [Sahih Muslim]

Mu’awiyah ibn Abu Sufyan (ra) relates: I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) say: It is the day of ‘Ashura. Allah has not made fasting obligatory for you. But I am fasting. [Sahih Muslim]
