History of the Magna Carta The Magna Carta is an

English charter, it was issued in the 1215.

The charter first passed into law in 1225.

The author of the Magna Carta is the barons of King John of England.

History of the Magna Carta The charter obligated King John of England to proclaim

certain liberties, and accept that his will was not arbitrary.

The charter required consecutive generations to petition the King to reconfirm his Charter, and hopefully abide by it.

The Purpose of the Magna Carta The purpose was to restrain the King and make him direct

by the old English laws. The Magna Carta was a collection 37 English laws; some

copied, some recollected, some old and new. The Magna Carta demonstrated that the power of the king

could be limited by a written grant.

The Great Charter 1225 King Henry 3 was called upon to confirm

the Charters.

He reissued Magna Carta in a shorter version with only 37 articles, as an acknowledgment of liberties in return for a fifthteenth part of moveable goods.

King John King John (1166-1216)

the son of King Henry became king of England in 1214 after his brother died.

He was given a nickname of “soft sword”

He was becoming unpopular due to his actions.

Habeas Corpus

Magna Carta guaranteed the right of Habeas Corpus.

Is a document that in court determines if the party is legally detained.

This prevented unlawful arrested.
