Leviticus 1:1, Then, And, Now Called

The Hebrew connective “vav” can be translated “and, so, then, when, now, or, but, that.” It looks back to Exodus. We’re still at Mt Sinai.

Leviticus 1:1, The Tent Of Meeting

• Leviticus 1:1 Then the LORD called...from the tent of meeting, saying, [Ex 25-32]

• Called the tabernacle of the congregation, tent of meeting, the Meeting Tent.

• 41 out of 141 NASU verses using “tent of meeting” are in Leviticus

• Exodus 24:3 Then Moses came and recounted to the people all the words of the LORD and all the ordinances; and all the people answered with one voice and said, "All the words which the LORD has spoken we will do!”

• Leviticus is God’s requirements to approach Him when they haven’t.

Leviticus 1:2, Voluntary Offering

• Leviticus 1:2 "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When any man [laity, people] of you brings an offering [voluntary] to the LORD, you shall bring your offering of animals from the herd or the flock [domesticated, owned, personal].

• John 10:18 "No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father."

• Leviticus 1:2 – 6:7 concerns the people, the Israelites. • Leviticus 6:8 – 7:38 concerns the priests.

Leviticus 1:3, A Male Without Defect

• Leviticus 1:3 …a male without defect…• Exodus 12:5 'Your lamb shall be an unblemished

male a year old…• 1 Corinthians 5:7 …For Christ our Passover also has

been sacrificed.• John 1:29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him

and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

• The “a burnt offering” was completely consumed. Jesus actually “died,” a complete offering.

Leviticus 1:4, Lay His Hand On The Head

• Leviticus 1:4 'He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, that it may be accepted for him to make atonement on his behalf.

• Genesis 24:2 Abraham said to his servant…place your hand under my thigh, 3 and I will make you swear by the LORD… [Genesis 47:29]

• The “phrase “lay his hand on the head” occurs 7 X’s from here to 4:33, only (in the NAS). It’s personal, man relating to his offering

• We must “relate” to Jesus.

Leviticus 1:5, He Shall Slay

• Leviticus 1:5 'He shall slay the young bull before the LORD…

• Who killed Jesus?• 1 Corinthians 15:3 …Christ died for our sins

according to the Scriptures,• Galatians 1:4 who gave Himself for our sins…• 1 John 2:2 …the propitiation for our sins… (4:10)• Revelation 1:5…Jesus Christ..released us from our

Leviticus 1:6,

• Leviticus 1:6 'He shall then skin the burnt offering and cut it into its pieces.

• Genesis 3:21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

Leviticus 1:9, “smoke”

• Leviticus 1:9 'Its entrails, however, and its legs he shall wash with water. And the priest shall offer up in smoke all of it on the altar for a burnt offering, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD.

• This word “smoke” is almost an exclusive Leviticus word. Lev. uses the word “smoke” more times than any other NAS book (33 X’s out of 86 uses), 3X’s more than 2nd. place Revelation (10 X’s).

• Revelation 8:4 And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, went up before God out of the angel's hand.

Leviticus 1:14, Offering

• Leviticus 1:14 'But if his offering to the LORD is a burnt offering of birds, then he shall bring his offering from the turtledoves or from young pigeons.

• This word “offering” is used the most in Leviticus. Our understanding of “The offering” would be lacking without a study of Leviticus.

• Leviticus uses the word “offering ” more times than any other NAS book (178 X’s out of 811 uses).

Leviticus 1:14, Burnt Offering Of Birds

• Leviticus 1:14 'But if his offering to the LORD is a burnt offering of birds, then he shall bring his offering from the turtledoves or from young pigeons.

• This option is for poor folks. (covenant, Genesis 15:9)• Luke 2:24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what

was said in the Law of the Lord, "A PAIR OF TURTLEDOVES OR TWO YOUNG PIGEONS.“

• Leviticus 12:8 'But if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons…

Leviticus 1:17, Not Severed Or Broken

• Leviticus 1:17 'Then he shall tear it by its wings, but shall not sever it….

• Mark 15:38 And the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

• Psalm 34:20 He keeps all his bones, Not one of them is broken.

• John 19:36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, "NOT A BONE OF HIM SHALL BE BROKEN."

In Conclusion

• The Lord Jesus is so present in Leviticus it’s no wonder He said;

• Luke 24:44 Now He said to them…all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled."

• Psalm 40:7 "Then I said, "Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me."

• Hebrews 10:7 ""THEN I SAID, 'BEHOLD, I HAVE COME (IN THE SCROLL OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME) TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD.'""

Deuteronomy 11:18-19 Psalm 119:16, • Question: "What are the most common things people think are in the Bible that are not actually in the Bible?"

Answer: In Psalm 119:16, David promises God, "I shall delight in Your statues; I shall not forget Your word." In Deuteronomy 11:18-19, God exhorts the Israelites, "You shall therefore impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. You shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up." As believers, we know we are to study the Bible, memorize it, and obey it. But does the Bible say what we think it says? The truth is, there are several phrases that sound like they come from the Bible, but do not.

"God helps those who help themselves. "The earliest recording of this saying is actually from Aesop's fable "Hercules and the Waggoner." A man's wagon got stuck in a muddy road, and he prayed for Hercules to help. Hercules appeared and said, "Get up and put your shoulder to the wheel." The moral given was "The gods help them that help themselves." Aesop was a Greek writer who lived from 620 to 564 BC, but obviously did not contribute to the Bible. As a biblical truism, the proverb has mixed results. We can do nothing to help when it comes to salvation; salvation is through Christ alone. In the work of sanctification—becoming more spiritually mature—we are to join in the work. 1 Peter 1:14-15 says, "As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior."

"In the last days, you will not be able to know the seasons except by the changing of the leaves. "Even a thorough Google search will not reveal the origin of this saying, but it is not found in the Bible. Matthew 24:32-33 uses the budding of leaves heralding the coming of summer as a metaphor for the signs that Christ will return. But nowhere does the Bible mention that seasons will be so altered that only the changing leaves will identify them.

"Hate the sin, love the sinner. "Although this is a biblical-sounding admonition, it is not directly from the Bible. It's a quote from Mahatma Gandhi. As a guideline, it's valid. We are to hate sin—even our own. And we are to show love to all others. Gandhi's quote is coming under fire in the world as more and more people define themselves by their sin and resent the guidelines God has given us in His Word.

"Money is the root of all evil. "This is a common misconception with an easy fix. 1 Timothy 6:10 actually says, "For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil…" Money is not good or bad, and being wealthy is not a sin; Job was wealthy and described as a man who was "blameless, upright, fearing God and turning away from evil" (Job 1:1). Loving money, which in the Greek is "avarice" and infers an emotional affection, is the root of all sorts of evil as the desire to accumulate wealth is placed above God and others.

"This too shall pass."This is actually a misinterpretation of a line from "The Lament of Doer," an Old English poem. Doer has been replaced as his lord's poet, and calls to mind several other Germanic mythological figures who went through troubled times. Each refrain ends with, "that passed away, so may this." Several verses in the Bible remind us that our lives and, indeed, heaven and earth will pass away (Matthew 24:35). But while we can find comfort knowing that our earthly sorrows are temporary, we're still called to rejoice in our trials, knowing that they will lead to endurance and sanctification (James 1:2-4).

"The lion shall lay down with the lamb. "Although Jesus is both the Lion of Judah and the Lamb of God (Revelation 5), this phrase does not appear in the Bible. Isaiah 11:6 says, "And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little boy will lead them." Similarly, Isaiah 65:25 reads, "The wolf and the lamb will graze together and the lion will eat straw like an ox…" The sentiment reads true, however—hunter and prey will be reconciled and live in peace in the eternal kingdom.

God left us the Bible as a written testimony of His Word. His truth is found in the Bible. Some sayings are simple rewordings of biblical truth, but others are dangerous heresy. Despite how clever or even edifying a quote may be, if it isn't in the Bible, we have no guarantee that it is the Word of God. And the only way we'll know is if we read the Bible.
