*What is lent?

*Lent is a solemn religious observance in the liturgical calendar of many Christian denominations that begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts approximately six weeks before Easter day. The traditional reason of lent is the preparation of the believer through prayers, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement and self-denial. *Ash Wednesday

*On Ash Wednesday, preceding the first Sunday of Lent, the symbolic gesture of the imposition of ashes is performed in front of the Catholic faithful. The ash represents the destruction of the errors of the previous year when they burned. While the priest imposes the ashes says one of two expressions: "Repent and believe in the gospel" or "Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return".
