The Proclamation of the Word A READING FROM THE BOOK OF GENESIS Read by Darryl Nakamoto Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and

lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the Lord stood beside him and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place—and I did not know it!” And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” GENESIS 28:10–17

The word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. PSALM 103: 19-22 (Tone VIII.2) (Please remain seated for the psalm.)

The LORD has set his throne in hea-ven, * and his kingship has do-min-ion o-ver all. Bless the LORD you angels of his / you mighty ones who do his bid-ding, * and hearken to the voice of his word. Bless the LORD all you his hosts, * you ministers of his who do his will. Bless the LORD all you works of his in all places of his do-min-ion; * bless the LORD O my soul.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: world with-out end A-men.

A READING FROM THE REVELATION TO JOHN Read by Joyce Connell War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world— he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, “Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah, for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” REVELA TION 12:7–12 The word of the Lord: Thanks be to God. Gospel Alleluia Choir: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia Cantor: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory. All: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia Gospeller: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ

according to John. All: Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told

you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” JOHN 1:47–51 Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ: All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Homily: Fr Jonathan Eayrs Affirmation of Faith (Please stand as able.) The Apostles’ Creed p. 189 Prayers of the People led by Rhonda Boyce (Please kneel, as able, for the Prayers of the People) Prayer of Confession Most merciful God we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, Have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Absolution The Exchange of the Peace (We greet and exchange the Peace of Christ with our neighbours.)

Offertory Hymn 320 “Ye watchers and ye holy ones” (Lasst uns erfreuen) (During this hymn the gifts of bread and wine are presented and a collection is taken up.)

(Please sit for the anthem.) Anthem: Te Deum Laudamus – Sir Charles Villiers Stanford

The text of the anthem is the same as that used at Morning Prayer: “We praise Thee, O God, we acknowledge Thee to be

the Lord .........” Prayer over the Gifts: God of glory, as you have appointed angels to minister in your presence, so may all our worship bring you worthy praise. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Eucharistic Prayer 3 p. 198 The Lord’s Prayer (sung) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil, For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Presider: “Creator of all, you gave us golden fields of

wheat, whose many grains have been gathered and made into this one bread.”

All: “So may your Church be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom.”

Communion Hymn (Panis vitae) Thee, O Christ, the Father's splendor,

life and virtue of the heart, in the presence of the angels sing we now with tuneful art,

mostly in alternate chorus bearing our responsive part.

Thus we praise with veneration

all the armies of the sky; chiefly him, the warrior Primate,

of celestial chivalry, Michael, who in princely virtue

cast Abaddon from on high.

By whose watchful care repelling-- King of everlasting grace-- every ghostly adversary,

all things evil, all things base, grant us of thine only goodness

in thy paradise a place.

Laud and honor to the Father, laud and honor to the Son,

laud and honor to the Spirit, ever Three and ever One, consubstantial, co-eternal, while unending ages run. While unending ages run.

Communion Motet: Panis Angelicus – Claudio Casciolini (1697-1760)

Bread of Angels, made the bread of men;

The Bread of heaven puts an end to all symbols:

A thing wonderful! The Lord becomes our food: poor, a servant, and humble.

We beseech Thee, Godhead One in Three

Page 5: Leaflet- St Barnabas on the Danforth - 29 Sept 2013

That Thou wilt visit us, as we worship Thee,

lead us through Thy ways, We who wish to reach the light

in which Thou dwellest. Amen.

Doxology (All stand as able) Presider: Glory to God, All: whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen. The Blessing Announcements Concluding Hymn “Angel voices, ever singing”

Angel-voices ever singing Round thy throne of light,

Angel-harps, for ever ringing, Rest not day or night;

Thousands only live to bless thee,

And confess thee Lord of might.

Thou who art beyond the farthest

Mortal eye can scan, Can it be that thou regardest

Songs of sinful man? Can we know that thou art near us

And wilt hear us? Yea, we can.

Yea, we know that thou rejoicest O'er each work of thine;

Thou didst ears and hands and voices For thy praise design;

Craftsman's art and music's measure For thy pleasure

All combine.

In thy house, great God, we offer Of thine own to thee;

And for thine acceptance proffer, All unworthily,

Hearts and minds and hands and voices, In our choicest

Psalmody.

Honor, glory, might and merit, Thine shall ever be,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Blessed Trinity!

Of the best that thou hast given Earth and heaven

Render thee. Dismissal: Deacon Grace Organ: Toccatinetto – Christopher Tambling

LIFE AND MINISTRY OF OUR COMMUNITY A letter for you! Please pick up your Thanksgiving letter from the back of the church today. For all who were wondering about Michaelmas Michaelmas, the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel (also the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, Uriel and Raphael, the Feast of the Archangels, or the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels) is a day in the Western Christian calendar which occurs on 29 September. Because it falls near the equinox, it is associated in the northern hemisphere with the beginning of autumn and the shortening of days. Michaelmas has also delineated time and seasons for secular purposes as well, particularly in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Source: Wikipedia Church school Our church school members will be meeting in The Study (through the doors by the chapel and turn right). Members return at Communion to rejoin their families. Reception at the Rectory today Everyone is invited to come to the Rectory at 20 Bowden St. for food and refreshments following the 10:30 service this morning. For those who don’t know where that is – just turn left onto Hampton on the west side of the church, walk south to Wolfrey, turn right and walk one block along Wolfrey to Bowden. The rectory is on the southwest corner, and you can recognize it by the wonderful wild garden of native plants at the front.
