OUR COUNTRYIn Catalonia we use to celebrate Christmas with our family and friends having lunch/dinner...

We have four special days which are:

Christmas day (24th/25th December)

Sant Esteve (26th December)

New Year’s Eve (31st December)

The Wise Kings day (6th January)

CHRISTMAS DAY24th/25th December

In our families we meet at home and we have dinner/lunch. Suddenly “caguem el tió”, which is a Catalan tradition; we give food to a trunk for a month, then we hit it on the Christmas day and it gives presents to us.

SANT ESTEVE26th December

The 26th we normally eat the food that has been left over from Christmas dinner. Then we prepare the papers for the invisible friend and we mix it and pass it to every member of the family, not including little children under 6/7 years.

NEW YEAR’S EVE31st December

For celebrate the new years eve we eat twelve grapes, one by one, while the chimes of the clock strikes midnight and drink cava. It is said that whoever eats the grapes in time will live a year full of luck. After dinner, we meet family and friends to celebrate watching TV where the chimes are relayed in live. Then, the young people get out to nightclubs, pubs... This celebration ends too late in the morning.

THE WISE KINGS DAY6th January

We celebrate the arrival of the Wise Kings with a ride called "Cabalgata". The kings ride horses or go on floats and throw sweets to the children. Kids, before going to sleep, leave cookies and drink for the Three Kings and straw for their camels. The next morning, the children discover that the food is gone and there are gifts left by the kings.

For lunch we usually eat the "Tortell" which is a round cake decorated with fruits and inside there's a small figure of a king.
