A mythological legend revolves around the celebration of the

Kumbh Mela. It is believed the Gods after losing their strength,

decided to churn the ocean with the collaboration of the demons to

obtain the Amrit, the nectar of immortality. They made a deal that

the nectar would be shared between both the parties. When the

Amrit was obtained, the gods refused to share it with demons. A

fight broke out which continued for 12 human years. During the

battle, Garuda, a celestial bird, flew away with the Kumbh that

contained the nectar. There is a belief that the places where the

drops of nectar fell are the sacred sites where the Kumbh Mela are

held now.

A major event of the festival is bathing in the banks of each river.

People hold a faith that taking a bath in the holy rivers, washes

away all the sins they had committed in their egoistic life. After

bathing, the devotees wear fresh new clothes and proceed to offer

prayers by the river bank.

“Kumbh Mela is the way to purify your soul and change the way of

life.”
