In this movie Tevye a poor farmer laments his place in the community as a lowly milkman and considers the esteem and importance that wealth would bring him.
He is devoted to God of course but he expresses his sorrow that the long working hours prevent him from spending as much time as he would like on praying.
And finally he asks God if “ he would spoil a vast eternal plan” if he was wealthy.
At the beginning of the twentieth century Jews and Orthodox Christians live in a little village in Russia of the Czars. Among the traditions of the Jewish community, the matchmaker arranges the match and the father approves it. The milkman Reb Tevye is a poor man that has been married for twenty five years with Golden and they have five daughters. When the local matchmaker Yente arranges the match between his older daughter Tzeitel and the old butcher Lazar Wolf, Tevye agrees with the wedding.
We see that when people don't have enough money to survive they accept to sucrifise their dreams about life.
