Where would we rate Mary?
Mary’s path to the throne• Born in 1516• Until the age 11 lived a normal life as a princess- Loades
‘Henry was genuinely fond of her, and Mary probably had more attention and affection from both her parents than was common with royal or aristocratic children of the period.’
• Age of 12 she was separated from Catherine.• From 1531 she was banned from seeing Catherine• In 1544 she was reinstated to the succession• Mary kept away from court during Edward’s reign thus
avoiding being embroiled in religious plots against the throne• In 1553 the age of 37 Mary became Queen.
‘To promote a woman to bear rule, superiority, dominion or empire above any realm, nation, or city us repugnant to nature; contumely to God, a thing most contrary to his revealed will and approved ordinance;
and finally, it is the subversion of good order, or all equity and justice.’
John Knox, First blast of the trumpet against the monstrous regiment of women. 1558
