Era of the Holy Spirit • Christians in general agree that we are

living in the era of the Holy

Spirit.

• Some Churches

overemphasis it – preach it as

the only doctrine.

Page 3: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

Era of the Holy Spirit• Some Churches ignore the Holy Spirit coz of the attention given by others to the topic.

• Others believe in the Holy

Spirit and teach it like any other doctrine.

The Bible Says ...

Who is the Holy Spirit?

What does the Bible say?

• I believe that our study will lead us to a higher understanding of the

Holy Spirit.• I hope we will receive the Holy Spirit and be

empowered to complete His task.

Page 5: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

Three Part Study

• Holy Spirit in the Old & the New Testament.

• Holy Spirit – The Former and the Latter Rain

• Holy Spirit – Receiving the Latter Rain

Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void; …

And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Gen. 1 : 1, 2

• The Holy Spirit was involved in the Creation.

• He was in the beginning … in fact He has no beginning, He

is the beginning.• After the Holy Spirit moved upon the waters – the entire

earth (as the earth was covered with water) He gave His

feasibility report.

Page 7: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

Holy Spirit & Creation

“Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to

Our likeness…” Gen. 1 26

• Man was created in the likeness of the Father, the Son and

the Holy Spirit.• Its so powerful to know that we were

made with a capacity to interact

with … connect with the Holy

Trinity.

Page 8: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

Holy Spirit & Samson• How would you draw Samson? The man who killed a lion with bare

hands, one who carried the gates of a city ...

• People kept asking him to tell them the source of

his strength. • Physically Samson was

an ordinary looking person.

• “And the Spirit of the Lord came

mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart …” Judges

14: 6• The Spirit gave Samson

supernatural strength and courage.

Page 9: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

Holy Spirit & Saul• Prophet Samuel anointed

Saul to be the King. • He gives Saul signs to

confirm that the anointing is from the Lord.

• One of the signs was ...“Then the Spirit of God will come upon you. And you

will prophesy with them and be turned into another

man.” 1 Sam. 10 : 6• Saul began to prophesy. The

Holy Spirit revealed to him the future. He was counted among the prophets.

• The Spirit was to transform Saul into what God wanted

him to be.

Page 10: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

King Cyrus of Persia

• King Cyrus of Persia – In his first year decreed that Jews in Babylon can return and rebuild

Jerusalem and the Temple.

• Around 43, 000 people responded to the call • The very next year,

Zerubbabel and those able began to rebuild the sanctuary

of God. • The task was impossible –

they did not have the construction material like King

Solomon, the neighbors opposed their efforts, they

themselves were often discouraged.

Page 11: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

Holy Spirit & The Prophets

• Zerubbabel was given this

assurance as he undertook this great task of

rebuilding Solomon’s Temple “Not by might nor by power,

but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.”

Zec.4:6

• The Holy Spirit empowered

Zerubbabel to finish the task he

was asked to begin.

Page 12: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

Only by the Holy Spirit

• God is very plain. When you are willing to be

involved in His work then ...

• His work CANNOT be done by might –

human strength and abilities.

• His work CANNOT be done by power – human authority,

money and influence.

• If His Work is done by the

anointing of the Holy Spirit - then

we will accomplish the purposes of

Heaven.

It is Best to do His Work with His anointing.

Page 13: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

Holy Spirit & The Prophets

• Prophet Joel warns about the great and terrible day of the Lord.• A day in which none stand a chance unless they turn to Him renting their hearts with fasting & weeping.

“I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh; Your sons and your

daughters shall prophesy, your old

men shall see visions”.

Joel 2 : 28 – 32

Page 14: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

* The Holy Spirit falls upon ALL genders. * A Christ centred

Church uses the gifts of all its members.

• The Holy Spirit empowers the old and the young.

• Some cultures respect the Old and undermine the young.

• In some cultures the old are disregarded.

•Even the master and the maid are treated alike by the Holy

Spirit.

Page 15: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

Great and Terrible Day• This predicted out pouring of the Holy Spirit will take place at a certain point in

time.

• There will be wonders in heaven – Sun will be darkened, Moon turned to blood.

• There will be wonders on Earth – looks like a volcanic eruption or use of weapons of mass

destruction.

This prophecy will be fulfilled in our times …

“Before the coming … of the Lord.”

Page 16: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

Holy Spirit in the New Testament

• Mary was a virgin, engaged to Joseph who was from the lineage of

David.

• Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she was “highly favoured one ... Blessed are you

among women!” • “you will conceive in your womb

and bring forth a Son, ... And the Lord God will give Him the throne of

His father David. ... And of His kingdom there will be no end.” Luke

1: 28 - 33 “she was found with child of

the Holy Ghost.” Math. 1 : 18

God.” Luke 1 : 35 * The Holy Spirit was powerfully

involved in the incarnation of God.

Page 17: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

• John the Baptist, the forerunner, called the people to repentance and baptised those who confessed their

sins.• He said, “I indeed

baptize you with water”

• Referring to Jesus he said, “He will baptize

you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” “When He had

been baptized …behold the heavens

were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove” Math.3: 5–16* Jesus was born &

baptized by the Holy Spirit.

Page 18: Holy Spirit - OT & NT

Holy Spirit and Recreation

• A Pharisee named Nicodemus came to Jesus

by night. • He said “we know that you are a teacher

come from God” • With compassion Jesus looked at this old man and discerned his inner most

need. • Nicodemus had all the knowledge about God, but

he did not know God.• He needed the

transformation of heart. Jesus said,

“Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot see the Kingdom

of God.... he cannot enter the kingdom of God ”

John 3: 3,5

The Holy Spirit which was active in creation must be

involved in the Re-creation, the Born Again experience of

every individual.
