History of Siege

The catapults

The first siege weapons were catapults.

Some of the first catapults were like the mangonel on the right.

The mangonel was invented by the Romans in 400 BC

The mangonel was introduced to the British in by1216 and was used a lot by the french.

More catapults

Another form of siege is the trebuchet. A trebuchet is a catapult that is a lot bigger and more powerful then the mangonel.

12 - 15th century weapon

Was used in christian and Muslim lands around the Mediterranean

The battering ram

Scientists think that the battering ram was invented by the Egyptians in 2000 BC.

It started out as a tree with a metal head used to smash down walls. Later they added the roof to protect from arrow fire.

Later as the Egyptians traded with there neighbors other cultures improved it and added there own designs

Cannon

The cannon replaced siege weapons and became artillery.

The power created by the cannon is powered by gunpowder.

The cannon was built in the 13th century and was first used in the battle of Crecy.

The Chinese built the first cannon in the 13th century.

Gatling Gun

Richard Jordan Gatling invented the Gatling Gun in 1861.

Richard and the American needed the Gatling Gun during the Civil War against ed the Spanish to take out many people at once.

2013 Gatling Gun

It features Gatling-style rotating barrels with an external power source, normally an electric system.
