Under Tiglath-Pileser III it first split Israel's territory into several smaller units and then destroyed its capital, Samaria (722 BCE).

During the early part of Hezekiah’s reign, the Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom of Israel, “the king of Assyria had besieged Samaria and taken them away into captivity.”

Eight years later Assyria began the taking of the fenced cities, the frontier towns and garrisons in Judah.

As most of the cities of Judah had been taken by the Assyrians, Hezekiah would pay tribute to Sennacherib, gold and silver, to save Jerusalem.
