Dear Special Members of Zion,
I needed to write a special note to say Thank You for everything you have done to help me after my car accident. There have been too many good deeds to mention them all. Thank you so much for all the beautiful cards, wonderful well-wishes, and most importantly all your prayers. I wish to thank the Prayer Shawl Ministry for the lovely purple prayer shawl. It has been used so often. I feel so blessed to be a member of the Zion Con-gregation. Your kindness has helped me through some hard days, but with God’s help, I look forward to walking soon! ~ Noreen Christianson
2012 Financial Update
June contributions were somewhat less than expected and expenses were higher so our General Fund bal-ance dropped about $6,000 to a level of $9,000. A slight drop in contributions is typical during the sum-mer months. Higher expenses were related to the temporary increased need for guest pastors as well as the July National Youth Gathering. The first two weeks in July appear promising with higher weekly contributions and lower expenses… so the financial picture appears to look pretty good with the General Fund balance estimated to end the month at about $8,000. Thank you, Zion members. We continue to appreci-ate your loyal support.
In Christ’s Service,
Your Finance Committee: Scott Glysch, President Renee’ Elertson, Vice President Gordon Holten, Treasurer

From Your Parish Nurse...
Well, summer is upon us. The heat, the vacations, the kids, and for some, the gardens – we wait all winter for the fun. With the gardens then, the little pests that chew on our beloved plants that we’ve started from seeds, or on the special plants we bought because they looked the healthiest on the shelf at the time of pur-chase, are probably also upon us – or our plants any-way.
When we think about the wonderful part of going out to our gardens and bringing the fresh garden produce into the kitchen, the thought of chemicals used on the pests and our food can give a dim light to the whole process. So I’m offering a few recipes for an organic way to try to ward off those little critters and keep our garden delights chemical-free, so to speak. Here are a couple remedies that may be worth trying. Let us know if you have luck.
For a spray, use 1½ tsp. Dawn per 1 quart water. Put into a spray bottle and spray onto the leaves and stems.
Also, this one might work. For one gallon of insecti-cide, put a few cloves of garlic, 1 small onion, a fresh
hot pepper, and 1 cup of cooking oil (seems like a lot of cooking oil) into a blender. After blended, add to one gal-lon of water. Strain the mixture before pouring into a spray bottle to avoid clogging. Try it on your plants.
For slugs: Take a small clean used empty margarine container and fill it with beer – no special kind. Press it down close to the level of the dirt where you suspect trouble and check it out in the morning ! yuk, but it works. They got a little tipsy….
And last, supposedly cloves kill bothersome flying insects. Cabbage worms dislike oregano and thyme. You can use 1 part herbs to three parts of a filler, such as cornmeal. Mix together and use as a powder to apply on plants.
Either way – enjoy your outdoor garden adventure. Summer is passing along and we’re blessed with the fun. Happy pest free gardening ! (We hope!)
Georgia Stapleton, RN Parish Nurse
Thanks to those who have contacted Shawano County Public Health to make
appointments for FREE car seat safety checks. The checks are provided monthly.
Everyone in the community is invited. Certified car seat check staff perform the
safety checks.
To participate you will need the child that is to be transported in your vehicle and the
car seat. Unfortunately 80% of car seats are either improperly installed or are the
wrong seat for the child’s need. As a grandma transporting my grandkids, I was quite
dismayed to learn about this! Here is an opportunity for a sound piece of mind when
transporting our kids/grandkids in addition to providing their safety. The Public
Health office can be contacted at 526-4808. Happy safe travelling!

Area gardeners have an opportunity to share their extra produce with those in need this summer. We are all feeling the pinch of tighter budgets, and some families are struggling to put food on the table. Share the Bounty is a hun-ger program which allows gardeners to bring their excess produce to drop-off sites where it is distributed to families and individuals who can use it. There
is no paper work. And recipients get healthy food and garden-ers know their produce will not be wasted! Share the Bounty is coordinated through the Shawano Co. UW-Extension Office. Local drop-off sites:
SAFPARC—218 E. Richmond Street 9:00—11:30 am. Monday thru Friday.
Lutheran Counseling & Family Services Thrift Store
2324 E. Richmond Street 9:30 am—5:00 pm. Monday thru Thursday 9:30 am—6:00 pm Friday 9:30 am—3:00 pm Sat. Goodwill Industries—300 Lakeland Road 9:00 am—9:00 pm. Monday thru Saturday 10:00 am—6:00 pm Sunday Quantities of produce both large and small are accepted! We ask that it be reasonably clean and of good quality. Boxes will be provided at the site. Contact Linda Olson, UW-Extension Family Living Educator at
715-526-6136 with any questions.
The 2012/2013 Sunday school year is just around the corner and it is time to be gearing up for a fun year with all our Zion youth.
We will be having a meeting for all teachers on
August 22 at 6pm. Please note this in your cal-
endar and plan on attending. See you all then.
Thank you for welcoming me into the faith community of Zion; I have felt your care and concern already as many have expressed their support and pray-ers as I work through family tragedy. I have also enjoyed the fellowship, deli-cious food and kind words of welcome both at the potluck following worship at Jerusalem and at the church picnic at the lake - wonderful opportunities to enjoy the gift of community our faith gives us.
As I continue getting to know the community of Zion, I will be asking many questions in order to learn your reflections about life at Zion and also your hopes for the future.
In order to help with this process, we will be setting up a Transition Team. I will work with this group to help get feed-back from you, the members as we ask together where God is leading Zion's future minis-try. The transition team will help set up some meeting times for members to gather together to discuss the goals you would like to accomplish during this time of transition as you prepare for your future. The tran-sition team will report to the congregation council and together we will set our goals for the months ahead. This can be a very exciting time as the congregation opens itself to new possibilities for the future; this is a time for prayer and a time to imagine the things God can accomplish through the ministry of Zi-on.
I realize this is a new and unknown process to all of you. Please ask questions so you will understand what is happening and so you can be involved in this important time in the life of your congregation. God has blessed Zion with many committed leaders and staff. I have also appreciated the volunteers who have jumped in to help me in leading worship and the various ministry that happen here. Together we can help people feel welcomed and we can joyfully celebrate together God's living presence with us. Jesus is here and I see Jesus love and compassion in you. Thanks be to God! God’s Peace,
Pastor Gisele

Dating Do-Over by Wendy Lawton is Book Four in the Real TV series. Bailey’s senior prom is just weeks away, and all she wants is a date. Her best friend Jenn is determined to change Bai-ley’s brainiac image so that her secret crush, Trevor, will finally notice her. Thanks to Luke, Jenn’s twin brother, Bailey finds herself on the hit reality show, Dating Do-Over, and gets much more than the date she wanted. When the hip producers get her whole school involved, Bailey is thrust into the spotlight while the cameras roll, she discovers the value of real friendship.
TJ and the Time Stumblers, written by Bill Myers, is the story of TJ Finkelstein, Tuna and Herby. Join this unlikely trio as they stumble into one hilarious catastrophe after another while acci-dentally learning the importance of such core values as love, honesty, patience, and kindness. Lessons from a Sheep Dog - A True Story of Transforming Love by Phillip Keller is the story of those first tense weeks with Lass and allows us to see Lass’s dramatic transformation from a scrawny, enraged animal into the strong, vibrant worker she was bred to be. Lass learns the lessons of trust, obedience, faithfulness and discipline.
A Social Statement on
Criminal Justice
Hearing the Cries:
Faith and Criminal Justice
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is preparing a social statement that address-es issues in criminal justice. The 2013 Churchwide Assembly, it is anticipated, will consider the pro-posed social statement. Learn about the statement's development and find resources for thinking about the issues on the ELCA website at www.elca.org.
The ELCA released, Hearing the Cries: Faith and Criminal Justice, a study written by the Criminal Justice Task Force. The study was created to invite members of the church to engage in moral delibera-tion on this major social issue. The responses from the study were used by the task force as they wrote the draft social statement.
How to Get Involved Now that the Draft Social Statement on Criminal Justice has been released, synods will be hold-ing hearings to receive feedback on the docu-ment. Those who are not able to participate in a synodical hearing are invited to study the draft in a group and submit a form (available online) to provide feedback to the task force.
A copy is available in the church office.
