Why Evangelize ?

Page 3: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

3

First, What is Evangelism?

• The word comes directly from the Greek (euangelion), meaning “good news,” or “gospel.”

• In 1 Cor. 15:3-5 the essential parts of the tremendous news we share are listed:– “Christ died for our sins…he was buried”

(NIV)– “he was raised on the third day, according to

the Scriptures”– “he appeared” to followers—as many as 500

at once, verifying the resurrection

John 3:16-18 Is The Heart of God’s Fantastic Grace

• "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

5

WHAT IS A ChristianEvangelist/Witness ?

• A Christian witness is God’s ambassador bringing the message of salvation in Christ alone, so that unbelievers will come to love God with all their heart, soul, mind and strength, and their neighbors as themselves (that is--become disciples).

Are Those Who Don’t Hear Of Jesus Really Lost ? YES

Those who do reject Jesus will not have eternal life in heaven

John 3:36b “whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."John 12:48 “There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day.John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Everyone sinsRom. 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”, Rom. 3:11-12 “As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one; 11 there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. 12 All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one."John 6:44 "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him

Are Those Who Don’t Hear Of Jesus Really Lost ? YES

Everyone sins, but sinners don’t normally seek God

Pagans suppress knowledge. They don’t accept the light already given. Romans 1:18-20 “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-- his eternal power and divine nature-- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”

Are Those Who Don’t Hear Of Jesus Really Lost ? YES

Pagans also violate their own moral standards– thus condemning themselves

Rom. 2:14-15 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, 15 since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)

Page 10: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

10

Are Those Who Don’t Hear Of Jesus Really Lost ? YES

Everyone comes into this world condemned by Adam’s sin

Romans 5:18 Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men.

Each of us also sins individually and sin results in spiritual death--Romans 6:23a For the wages of sin is deathForgiveness comes by repentance and faith in Christ

Acts 10:43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.“

Page 11: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

11

Are Those Who Don’t Hear Of Jesus Really Lost ? YES

Salvation does not come automatically by the death of Christ on the cross. We must trust that death to pay for our personal sins.

Romans 10:9-10 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Forgiveness doesn’t come automatically.

Why Witness ?

¤ In the New Testament the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10). We are now His “feet” to reach the lost, wherever they are (Rom. 10:14-15).

¤ Christians are now mediators (priests) between God and unbelievers (Rom. 15:16; 1 Pet. 2:9).

Page 20: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Our Responsibility

Page 21: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Our Responsibility: Rescue

¤ Proverbs 24:11 Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. 12 If you say, "But we knew nothing about this,“ does not he who weighs the heart perceive it?Does not he who guards your life know it?Will he not repay each person according to what he has done?

Page 22: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Our Part: Diligence

¤ “We are under orders to devote ourselves to spreading the good news, and to use all our ingenuity and enterprise to bring it to the notice of the whole world. The Christian, therefore, must constantly be searching his conscience, asking himself if he is doing all that he might be doing in this field.” JI Packer, Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God, p. 26-27

Page 23: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Our Part: Going

¤ Theologian A.H. Strong is quoted as wondering not what will happen to the heathen who have never heard, but what will happen to the Christians because the heathen never heard. Dr. John Gerstner

Page 24: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Our Responsibility: Love

¤ Introducing a person to Christ is the most loving act possible. They meet love by meeting God and it brings new life now and eternal life later.

¤ Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (1Jo 4:11 NIV)

The Spirit’s Work: Empowerment and life

LK 4:18-19 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.“

The Spirit alone gives life to the lost (John 6:63). The evangelist cannot give life.

Page 41: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

41

The Work of the Spirit: Conviction

The Spirit convicts of sin [of not believing in Christ], righteousness [of Christ], and the coming judgment [upon Satan] (John 16:8). Without a conviction of sin, a person will

not sense a need to be saved. I’ve never seen anyone come to Christ without being convicted of sin.

Page 42: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

42

The Work of the Spirit: Fielding workers

The Holy Spirit also fields workers to gather in God’s harvest of the redeemed (Luke 10:2). He does this in response to the worker’s prayer.

The Apostles were instructed to wait for the power of the Holy Spirit before beginning their international ministries (Acts 1:8). So we must be filled with the Spirit to accomplish any significant evangelistic ministry.

The Process of “Being Saved”

Page 44: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

44

The Evangelist’s Work

Page 45: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

45

The Evangelist’s Confidence

• God makes the evangelist to be adequate.– 2 Corinthians 3:5-6 5 Not that we are

competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. 6 He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant-- not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Page 46: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

46

The Evangelist’s Preparation

• The evangelist needs to understand basic truths about God, Christ, the Holy Spirit and human beings. The evangelist needs to understand what salvation is and how it is clearly conveyed (Col. 4:4). If the witness is confused, confusion will result, although a person might be saved anyway.

Page 47: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

The Evangelist’s Attitude

• “Since a saint’s gloom reflects unkindness on God Himself, how can we recommend His satisfying love if it does not satisfy us? The world thinks the Christian life is depressing anyway, a dry meal where very little wine of joy is tasted. Why will you confirm their deception, Christian? Why should they have your example as evidence against Jesus and His Word, which promise peace and joy to everyone who comes to the table?....They can believe it is good news when they can read it clearly in a cheerful life.” circa 1655 William Gurnall, The Christian in Complete Armour, Vol. 2, p. 258. ISBN: 0851515150

47

Page 48: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

48

The Evangelist’s Preparation

• 2 Corinthians 4:2 Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. – We don’t claim that we’re taking a survey if

we’re not taking one

• On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. – Colossians 4:4 Pray that I may proclaim

[the mystery of Christ] clearly, as I should.

Page 49: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

49

The Evangelist’s Preparation

• We need to pray for boldness (Acts 28:31; Eph. 6:19-20) and the fullness of God’s Spirit (Eph. 5:18). We need to pray for love for the lost (Gal. 5:6b) and a servant’s spirit. If I feel myself to be superior to the “sinner,” that is pride (Lk. 18:11). Confess your sins, restoring the joy of your salvation (Ps. 51:12-13), before instructing other sinners.

Page 50: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

50

The Evangelist’s Preparation

• We need to put on the full armor of God (Eph. 6:10-18), part of which is prayer. Part of this armor is defensive, and part offensive (the Sword of the Spirit, by which Jesus defeated Himself against Satan’s attack (Matt. 4:1-11).

• Go with someone else. The work is much easier with a co-worker.

• Colossians 4:5-6 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Page 51: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

The Work of the Evangelist: GO

• How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? The Work of the Evangelist: Prayer Against Fear

• Ephesians 6:19-20 Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

The “Work” of the Sinner

• “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’ [that he is resurrected and reigning] and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, [the sign Jesus gave that He was the Messiah, Matt. 12:39-40], you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, ‘Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.’” Romans 10:9-10

Follow-up --immediate

• Immediately after a profession of faith (it is simply that—a profession—a changed life is the proof—2 Cor. 5:17), give some guidance.– Encourage finding a Bible-believing, loving

church.– Note that sinning doesn’t mean we aren’t

Christians (1 John. 1:9; 2:1).– Teach them about God’s armor (Eph. 6:10-18).– Show them the Lord’s prayer (Luke 11)– See this information for followup:

Page 72: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

72

Followup –Bible’s importance– Read the Bible—Gospel of John (for salvation

reinforcement), Psalms (to learn to pray), Proverbs (to know how to live). Give a New Testament or Bible. The English Standard Version costs about $2 in bulk from from Crossway. Offer a modern language Bible, or you make the Bible needlessly difficult to read. It has the plan of salvation included.

• A follow-up sheet can be printed from http://www.rmni.org/teaching-resources/evangelism-a-discipleship/follow-up.html and given to the one professing Christ.

Page 73: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

73

Follow-up –further contact• Get contact information from the person—

address and cell phone number. Try to return within 24 hours.

• On the second visit, again ask the diagnostic question of what they would say to God about why He should let them into heaven. Evangelize again if a “works” answer is given.

• Pray for the person’s growth. Try to provide a ride to church if needed. Put a discipler into contact with the one professing Christ if the person is of the opposite gender.

• Use “interruptions” in the Gospel presentation as a “divine appointment” to share with others who show up.

Page 74: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Who is on your heart?

• Ask God for a specific opening and opportunity to witness to that person.

• You may plant, water, sow, or do all three tasks (John 4:37-38; 1 Cor. 3:6-8). You will be rewarded for your efforts. It is God’s work to save, but ours to witness.– Hebrews 6:10 10 God is not unjust; he

will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.

Page 75: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

INNER CITY EVANGELISM

75

Page 76: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Legitimacy

• Do people from white churches have authority to work in the inner city?– Our legitimacy comes from Jesus, who tells

all His disciples to go into all the world. We go under His authority (Matt. 28:18).

– Cults are there. Muslims are there. Agnostics and atheists are there.

– Generally, the black church does not have an ongoing presence, except church vans (at least in Chattanooga and probably Atlanta).

– It’s best to have teams of blacks and whites.

76

Page 77: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Divine Appointments

• Ask God for divine appointments. None come to Christ unless the father draws them. Ask God to put those He is drawing to Himself in your path.

• Since people will usually know who you are, your presence will often stir up a religious conversation. People may display their Bible knowledge. They often will ask questions about the Bible and express their doubts and what they’ve heard.– Listen, listen, listen. Then speak to questions.

77

Page 78: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Give a Gift• A gift opens the way for the giver and ushers

him into the presence of the great. (Pro 18:16 NIV).

• We’ve found two good ways to initiate conversations. First, offer a free New Testament. Judging by how that is received, we proceed to learn where they are spiritually by asking questions, or we don’t proceed due to lack of interest (and pray that the NT will be used well). We’ll provide you with NT’s. http://www.crossway.org/bibles/esv-share-the-good-newsreg-outreach-new-1356-tpb/

• Second, we offer job information, including specific companies, contacts, etc., and more generally, websites. Often those with no interest in the Bible will show definite interest in job information. We’ll provide this info for distribution—just ask.

Page 79: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Challenges

• People are very transient. You may never see the person again. Try to leave items to read with the person. Ask God for radical salvations.

• Most know about and want a “Daily Bread” devotional booklet. This gift opens a way for friendship. If the person shows interest, offer also a New Testament.– The ESV version we use has the plan of

salvation on page 211—point this out.

79

Page 80: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Hang Out

• Just hang out. Life at the Westside is to us in slow motion. I have to consciously slow down my speech, expectations and plans. Moving from “doing” to “being” in an instant. Everything slows down.

• Focus upon developing relationships, rather than a one-time contact.

• Possibly visit in jail and write to the person if s/he goes to jail.

• Don’t carry a big Bible. This scares people. You may carry a valise of resources.

Page 81: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Be Consistent as Possible

• Consistently residents criticize people who come, promise and disappear, or come, ask for signatures for a grant, and disappear, etc.

• If you simply can be relied upon to show up, you will be pure gold to folks at the Westside. They may not say so at the time, but they will notice. Showing up is about 50% of ministry at the Westside. This isn’t designed to guilt-trip you to come. It’s simply what works, to build relationships.

• Just let your contacts know when you can’t be there. Communicate, and they will understand.

• You are a volunteer, not a full-time missionary—that is understood.

Page 82: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Developing Relationships• As you probably know, the key to ministry

is having good relationships. We need to balance boldly sharing Christ with keeping the door open with the person so that we or another Christian can return.

• When you feel there is enough trust, ask for their name, and particularly for their nickname or street name. Use the street name, unless told not to. Also ask for their phone number. Have a small pad and pen with you.

• A great fear in the black community is having someone’s “business” shared with others. So keep confidences.

Page 83: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Resource Local Christian Leaders• Provide resources to local natural

leaders, who will do a much better job of reaching their friends than we will. Ask for wisdom to locate local leaders.– The form of discipleship changes over time,

from regular personal time to providing resources for their ministry (Neil Cole)—more time to less time, typically.

– Helping may take the form of books they want, Bibles that they can hand out, trainings, taking to a conference, etc.

– Relationship “The key to everything is relationships with many to find just one. The man or woman you are looking for is the one that God has prepared to bring the Gospel into the community—the one Luke 10 calls the ‘Man of Peace.’” http://newgenerationsintl.org/church-planting/our-process.php

Page 84: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Team Dynamics

• Whoever initiates the presentation of the Good News is not to be interrupted. Team members should watch and pray. The leader should be sensitive to body language and may offer an opportunity to add input at the appropriate time.– If the “lead” is grabbed, this results in

confusion.– In a Bible study context, defer to the leader

to respond to challenges--or someone the leader asks to respond. Otherwise confusion results.

84

Page 85: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Team Dynamics

• When the team comes together is a good time to greet one another and catch up.

• When moving into the neighborhood, the focus turns to those in the community, away from other team members. Our purpose is to engage those we do not know, developing relationships with them. – This doesn’t mean that we are silent as we

move, but that relationships with those outside the team are the priority.

85

Page 86: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Mobile Phones

• These are a great help in finding each other, particularly if a person arrives at a different time. – Since the community is the focus, answer

mobile phones only if you must, or if the call comes from a team member. Satan is good at placing calls at crucial times, particularly when a person is getting close to God. Don’t be surprised.

– In a Bible study context, please put your phone on vibrate and if you need to take the call, leave the room to talk.

86

Page 87: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

What to wear• Dress for the hood. If warm enough, a simple

T-shirt is good, with jeans or casual pants. Hoodies are good. Look at what is worn there, and see if you can wear something that looks like it.

• In order not to turn off people before you talk with them, avoid dressing entirely in red or blue (red-Bloods, and blue-Crips). While black is also a gang/police color, I find that to be OK, and green, brown and other colors. People know you’re not in a gang, but it’s the instinctive reaction that may be an issue. However, people are very forgiving and understand you’re not in a gang.

Page 88: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Girl’s clothes

• Here is good counsel from one of our ladies: – “Wear clothing that does not draw

(male) attention to yourselves and avoid any but the most simple jewelry. I've never felt threatened while in the projects, but I do remind myself not to test the Lord our God. As young women, you need to be particularly wise in the way you are perceived.”

Page 89: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Cautions for Girls

• An attractive girl will have the interest of guys in the hood (also). You may represent a challenge to the guys. They may pretend to have an interest in Christ, and want to go to church with you, and may even profess Christ. We’ve found that motives may not be pure. Let guys take guys to church and let guys develop relationships with guys.

• Again, young women should focus on reaching girls and children. Let men work with the men.

Page 90: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Ways to help• A good way to help is to assist in creating

resumés, which can be sent to employers. Ask the person to complete a sample form, then type it up. We have resumé templates.

• Prayer is almost always appreciated. Consider praying together before leaving, even on the sidewalk, and pray during the week for your new friend. Don’t be surprised if people suddenly gather as you pray, and hold hands.

• Meet needs of the moment if possible. You can refer to an agency, comfort, pray and be a friend. We have a local-resources list.

Page 91: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Other Ways to Engage

• Dawn Coulter suggests:– Swap numbers with someone in the

community of your same gender and call them, go out to lunch with them, hang out with them, study the Bible with them.

• Consider taking people to a Christian retreat center over a weekend. Have fun together, such as playing cards, going bowling, shooting pool or going to a baseball game.

91

Page 92: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

SPECIAL SITUATIONS IN THE HOOD

92

Page 93: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Chaos

• Inner city life is quite chaotic, with little schedule. TV and radio in the background add to the confusion. Appointments are often forgotten. Phone numbers frequently change. Financial and relational crises are common.

• As a person is discipled, don’t be surprised if s/he moves out of the housing project. This is often to get away from ungodly patterns and influences.

• The need for peace is prominent.93

Page 94: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Leeches

• The leech has two daughters. ‘Give! Give!’ they cry. (Prov. 30:15). – Some people will take everything they can

from you. When you give they come quickly back for more. They are never satisfied.

• If you detect this, tell them that you have decided not to give them anything more, as it has become a (dependency) pattern. You are not called to be used and exploited. Set boundaries, and hold them. You can mention that a gift is a one-time gift.

• If money would obviously be for something harmful, you may decline. God has not lost the money if what you give is misused. You have your reward and everything belongs to God anyway.

94

Page 95: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Violence

• Realize that fights can erupt at any time. People will run to them.

• You might be caught in the middle of a fight, including a gun fight. Move to safety.

• Don’t meddle with a fight between strangers.– Like one who seizes a dog by the ears is a

passer-by who meddles in a quarrel not his own. (Pro 26:17 NIV)

95

Page 96: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

You are not the police

• Our job is not to report crime. Our job is to see lives change by the power of the Holy Spirit, which will lead to lower crime.– Don’t ask questions about gangs or if a

person is a gang member. Don’t ask out of curiosity about gang signs (colors, symbols, etc.). You may be mistaken for an undercover cop.

96

Page 97: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Hostility

• You may meet Muslims or atheists who will challenge you.– 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. (1Pe 3:15-16 NIV)

• You may meet people who will try to run you out. Satan doesn’t want you there. 97

Page 98: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Dealing with Muslims

• Be familiar with Muslim beliefs. Here is a brief overview: http://www.rmni.org/teaching-resources/powerpoint-presentations/world-religions.html – Here are scriptures in the Quran and Bible to

use with Muslims: http://www.rmni.org/teaching-resources/evangelism-a-discipleship/color-coded-verses-for-witnessing.html

• Muslims, like Christians, vary in how much they know of their religion. Don’t be intimidated. You know your faith better.

98

Page 99: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Discipleship Resources

• As you get to know someone, you will discover “issues”. Each of us has issues, of course. One way to disciple is to share materials dealing with a specific issue. We can give a book, for example, that deals with it. An inexpensive way is to print materials from the Internet. Here are two sites that allow printing and distribution of materials, as long as the source of the material is not deleted. Please share other sources of good material with us.– John Piper

http://www.desiringgod.org/resource-library/sermons/by-date

• He has messages in printable form on many subjects.

– Rick Warren http://purposedriven.com/books/pdlbook/#purpose

Page 100: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Giving Rides• This requires a lot of wisdom. A criticism of

people who come to the Westside is that outsiders don’t want to get physically close to them, including letting them get into their car, or having a meal together.

• However, you can get robbed or worse. Unless you are very close to a person and have no anxiety about it, I would not give a ride. Men are advised not to give a ride to a woman unless another volunteer is present. Women, do not give men a ride under any circumstances.

• If a person says s/he is hungry, it’s generally better to provide the food (convenience store or taking to a local fast-food restaurant). If you go to a restaurant, have something to eat as well.

Page 101: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Accounting for you

• We will try to have someone meet you at the parking lot, if you let us know when you’re coming.

• You have your own schedule as to when you leave, but please let one of the leaders know when you leave, so that we don’t have to go searching for you. This is particularly important regarding girl volunteers. A cellphone call is sufficient notice. This is an informal, but important matter.

Page 102: Evangelism: Inner City Focus

Beliefs of Subgroups

• 10% of African Americans, 15% of Hispanics and 26% of whites believe that moral truth is absolute (Barna, 2/12/2002,

“Americans are Most Likely to Base Truth on Feelings”).

• How do these stats affect your particular evangelism efforts?
