How effective is the combination of your main

product and ancillary texts?

Theme-by Bradley George

We chose to use some of Raleigh Ritchies actual song lyrics the convey the theme of depression seen in the

first half on our video.

The image of the main character on the album is made to look like he is trapped and isolated from everyone is. A similar theme is also present in

our video as well.

In contrast to the inside of the album, the back of it shows the confident transformation of the protagonist,

showing the theme of determination and not giving up.

Theme part 2

The hand is a more symbolic element of our digiback and it represents our character being trapped and trying to escape, as if he is pressing his hand against a wall. This is shown in our film when he is trying to escape to pain of

his fathers death

Representation of characters:Joe Bradbury

Character is shown alone in the majority of the video; showsthat he is isolated/lonely which links into the main theme of

the video which is depression.

We decided to show the characters emotions through a literal sense in the

Digi-Pak. With the character himself being surrounded by words

and terms which can all be related to himself. In the video we showed this through the physicality of the character with him always being overpowered (teachers stand over him to

show higher status).

Both in the digi-pak and music video, we portrayed the character as lacking confidence and being very insecure. we did this through the use of body language and costumes. In both parts of our media product we showed the character

to have slumped shoulders and having a lowered head. There is also a slight indication of the character being insecure during the first swimming scene where the character is

shown wearing a t-shirt even though he appears to be going into the pool. This shows that he is not confident showing

his body.

We continued displaying links between the words shown in the digi-pak and the video by showing the second character who

pushes the protagonist into the pool in a very high angleshot. This gives the character a larger dominance over the

character and can relate to words such as ‘selfish’, ‘blame’ and ‘leave’. This is also shown when the protagonist is being shouted

at by the teachers. Being positioned above him show’s a clear sign of hierarchal structure and again links back to the words

displayed on the digi-pak.

Use of Titles:Joe Bradbury

The titles used in both our magazine advert and our digi-pak resemble that of handwritten text on a chalkboard. We purposely did this so that the relation between the video and our ancillary work is a lot stronger as a high majority of the video was filmed and based inside a school. Although the video never focuses on the fact that its located in a school, through the use of Mise-en-scene (protagonist’s costume, school equipment being shown out of focus, groups of students) the audience will be able to sub-consciously realise the whereabouts of the selected scenes. Although chalkboards are no longer used in schools and are not seen at all in the video, they are quite a stereotypical feature of school equipment and are easily relatable to school and young people.
