ABOUT THE 5 LOVE LANGUAGES

Popularized by the works of Gary Chapman in his best selling book, The 5 Love Languages, the theory offers insight on how humans connect with each other in relationships through giving and receiving love.

“You must love the Lord with all of your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as

As we understand our own preferred way of receiving love, as well as those around us, we can better connect, build, and communicate our love with one another in an effective way.

UNDERSTANDING how we prefer to give and receive love can help us to connect deeper with God on that level. Some people have a harder time connecting and building relationship with God more than others—maybe because we’re not sure how to do it.

CHARACTERISTICS: Prefers encouragement, motivation, and positive affirmation to thrive.

APPLY IN RELATIONSHIP Ask to know where we stand with Him and whether or not He truly approves of us. When we ask, He will always answer us and we can seek righteousness and identity in Him.

SCRIPTURES: “A voice from heaven said, ‘You are my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with you.’” (Matt. 1:11, NASB) “Others were given in exchange for you. I traded their lives for yours because you are precious to me. You are honored and I love you.” (Isaiah 43:4, NLT)

CHARACTERISTICS: In a non-romantic relationship, prefers physical touch, often in the form of arms around the shoulder, hugs, holding hands, high-fives, and arm grabbing while talking.

APPLY IN RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD As we step inside our spirit, we can begin to engage God in a way that our physical body will begin to sense. God is present in every dimension, even our physical one! Meditate on the heart of God and allow your hearts to connect as if you both were hugging. As you seek Him in this way, you will find Him.

SCRIPTURES: “For you bless the godly, O LORD; you surround them with your shield of love.’” (Psa. 5:12, NLT) “Unfailing love surrounds those who trust in the LORD.” (Psa. 32:10)

CHARACTERISTICS: Prefers receiving tokens of appreciation and tangible representations of love and affection, usually flowers or small gifts.

APPLY IN RELATIONSHIP Take notice of when favor is shown towards you such as an unexpected upgrade, open doors, and unmerited favor in the natural and nuggets of wisdom, understanding and revelation in the spirit.

SCRIPTURES: “Call to me and I will answer you, and I will show you great and mighty things which you do not know.” (Jer. 33:3, NKJV) “Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of heavenly lights.” (Jas. 1:17, NIV)

CHARACTERISTICS: Prefers spending time with others for long periods, giving all of one’s attention and focus.

APPLY IN RELATIONSHIP Set aside blocks of time to sit and spend with God and think on Him during our daily routines. Perhaps not always being active in speaking, even just listening.

SCRIPTURES: “Be still and know that I am God,” Psa. 46.10 NKJV)

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” (Cos. 4:2, NIV)

CHARACTERISTICS: Prefers giving and receiving love by removing stressful tasks for oneself and others. Common tasks would be tending to children, doing chores, and taking care of errands.

APPLY IN RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD Knowing that God takes care of all of our needs and that He is our provider, we can begin to connect with Him by seeking Him in that way. Both spiritually and naturally, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, showing that even in that way He can show us love.

SCRIPTURES: “Cast all your care on Him, for he cares for you.’” (1 Pet. 5:7, NKJV) “The LORD is my shepherd, I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows, he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.” (Psa. 23:1-3)
