Br. Rami Fodda, OFM has been in residence at Old Mission San Luis Rey since April, 2013. Before that, Br. Rami was stationed at the Franciscan Community in Berkeley, CA with the Franciscan School of Theology. With the school moving to the Old Mission, Br. Rami decided to move with it.

You are not likely to catch Br. Rami at the Parish Office or an FST class room. In fact Br. Rami does not work for the entities at the Old Mission. He is a Nurse Practitioner.

During the weekdays, Br. Rami works at North County Health Services Clinics caring for the sick. He feels that by caring for his patients bodily needs, he is able to touch their spirits. The tradition of Friars working with the sick goes back to St. Francis himself whose very first works included caring for sick lepers. In this manner, St. Francis was following in the footsteps of Jesus, who also concerned himself with healing the sick.

Br. Rami’s work is not limited to the North County. He recently returned from a Medical Mission to Guaymas, Mexico. Together with Oscar Mendez, OFM MD and Bob Valentine OFM PA, they spent a week caring for the sick in poor villages.

The Six Communities of Mission San Luis Rey

Mass will be held at the Serra Center at the Mission parish at 8am. The Marines of Camp Pendleton will provide a taps service after mass at approximately 9am in the Mission Cemetery. Fr. David Gaa will bless the cemetery at that time. All are welcome.

The Cub Scout Pack 721 is laying the flags on the graves for the second year in a row. There are 37 members belonging to this pack sponsored by Mission San Luis Rey Parish. The cub master is Michael Lucio and the treasurer/community event organizer is Holli Davidce. The Cub Scouts of America have 12 core values; among them are four that are demonstrated effectively in this activity: citizenship, compassion, cooperation and respect. Old Mission San Luis Rey thanks the Cub Scout Pack 721 for their participation in Memorial Day 2014!

Memorial Day - Monday, May 26th

In May we will be conferring the Sacrament of First Communion to the children of our parish. Students from third grade through eleventh grade will be celebrating the mystery of the Eucharist with their classmates, parents and relatives.

Our students have participated in a two year process of Religious Education classes, sacramental preparation sessions and interviews to assure readiness for reception of this most precious gift from God. To be able to partake and receive the Body of Christ is one of those indescribable feelings, the joy and excitement of participating in the reception of the true presence of Christ can be most humbling for any believer. From now on they can stand next to their parents and receive the Eucharist, side by side with the entire congregation.

When the students arrive at the Serra Center and see a thousand seats filled to capacity in support, one can certainly expect it will be remembered as one of the most significant events of their spiritual journey with Christ.

Nuestros estudiantes han participado en un proceso de dos años de clases de Educación Religiosa, se-siones de preparación sacramental, y entrevistas para asegurar la preparación para la recepción del regalo más preciado de Dios. El poder participar y recibir el Cuerpo de Cristo es una de esas sen-saciones indescriptibles, el gozo y la emoción de participar en la recepción de la presencia verdadera de Cristo puede ser una lección de humildad para cualquier creyente. De ahora en adelante pueden estar al lado de sus padres y recibir el Sacramento de Eucaristía junto con toda la congregación.

Cuando los estudiantes llegan al Centro Serra y ven mil asientos llenos de capacidad para apoyarlos a ellos, uno ciertamente puede esperar que recordarán este evento como uno de los más significativos de su jornada espiritual con Cristo.

‘It was AMAZING!’ said Leslie Marin of the 2014 Confirmation Retreat at Green Oaks in Vista. 65 Teens in the Confirmation program spent a weekend at the ranch experiencing their Faith in new and deeper ways. The teens had opportunities to build community, experience talks, share meals, relax, and share in the celebration of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist in a beautiful natural setting.

Dedicated and wonderful Confirmation teachers, Adult Volunteers, and Teen Leaders hosted the retreat with Vince Nims as a guest speaker. Five of our beloved Friars from Mission San Luis Rey joined the teens Saturday evening for a Reconciliation Service set up in an outdoor chapel in the woods, and Fr. Adrian celebrated a special Mass in an outdoor amphitheater setting for the Teens Sunday morning.

Looking back on his experience, Keegan Clifford thought the weekend was ‘really fun’ and that he learned how to better express his religious beliefs at the retreat. Other students indicated that the experience helped them build their relationship with God. Meeting new people and getting to sleep in cabins at night were highlights for Esmeralda Cervantes. Han Tran said that although the weekend was a lot of fun, he also learned a lot. Han especially appreciated all the connections he discovered in Catholicism to our everyday lives and life stories. Many students echoed Samantha Castillo’s thoughts as she emphasized the outdoor Reconciliation service as a high point of the weekend, saying that Reconciliation just made them feel good. Samantha elaborated saying, ‘I loved Reconciliation out in nature. I felt like I was camping! It helped me feel close to God.’

The weekend retreat was a significant and joyful step toward the Sacrament of Confirmation to occur on June 3rd. Please keep our parish teens and teachers in your prayers as they continue their journey toward the Sacrament of Confirmation.

The Franciscan School of Theology is delighted to introduce our students to the OMSLR communities! Please meet Rebecca Freeman, first-year Master of Divinity student and a member of FST’s Student Leadership team. A graduate of Mills College, Rebecca is also a Certified Child Life Specialist. This is how Rebecca describes her first year at the Franciscan School:

Abundance is one of the most striking words I have encountered thus far at FST. Perhaps my favorite aspect is that the joyful verb “dance” makes up most of it! Abundance is such an integral part of the Franciscan vision and who we are as an intellectual and spiritual community.

After being a part of the FST community for almost a year, I have noticed that there is an abundance of anticipation in working through the ‘head and heart’ in order to cultivate the roots that will give each of us the tools with which to discern and actively

participate in the world. In the classroom environment, intellectual exchange is supported by curiosity, wonder, and a desire for the abundance of learning. Faculty and staff are always willing to share and guide students to reach the abundance of their potential. Through spiritual development, the FST cohort weaves personal journeys into spiritual practice so that we may learn to renew the abundance within ourselves in order to minister to others.

This give and take of the scholarly and spiritual at FST is what makes this educational graduate program so much more than a theology school. There is truly an ongoing ‘dance’ of lively conversation, engagement with community, and a passion for generosity that guides the spirit of the entire experience. After FST, bringing this light of abundance into the movement of creation will bring possibility and hope where it is needed the most. My classmates have so many beautiful dreams for sharing the wisdom of their programs in teaching, ministry, justice work, chaplaincy, missions, and more. This ever-evolving dance of abundance with Francis and Clare and the FST tradition, is what births architects of change, artists of the soul, leaders of truth, and protectors of creation into a waiting human family and gives each student an opportunity to see what more can be learned, appreciated, and given.

We hope you have a chance to meet Rebecca in person, and we look forward to bringing you more students’ stories in the future!

FST Summer Institute to Focus on Pope Francis

A Pope Named Francis…A New Vision for the Church is the topic for the third annual Summer Institute at Old Mission Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara, CA) set for July 27 through August 1, 2014. The five-day workshop is hosted by the Franciscan School of Theology (FST) at the Mission Sana Barbara Renewal Center and is open to the public.

Scheduled speakers at the Institute include: Father Joseph Chinnici, OFM, President of FST; Brother William Short, OFM, Dean of FST; and Sister Ramona Miller, OSF, immediate past president of the Franciscan Federation and

former Director of Spiritual Formation at FST.

Per person cost, including registration, course fees, tuition, lodging and meals for the Summer Institute is: Single with private shower: $975; Single with shared shower: $925; Dormitory with shared room: $895; Commuter with meals: $700; and Commuter without meals: $500.

According to Fr. Franklin Fong, OFM, the Assistant Director of Development at FST, the Summer Institute is the third such event hosted by the Franciscans since 2012. Fr. Fong said, “Our Summer Institute is more than just an academic workshop. It’s an opportunity for the faithful laity, as well as priests and members of various religious orders, to further develop their pastoral ministries and deepen their faith journeys… all in a picturesque and tranquil environment less than three miles from the Pacific Ocean.”

Old Mission Santa Barbara Renewal Center is a 60-room facility located on ten acres of landscaped gardens and walking paths on the grounds of Mission Santa Barbara. The retreat center is surrounded by many walking trails, and is located within walking distance to many Santa Barbara museums and gardens.

Our young adults have been gathering in 4-week blocks on Thursdays from 7:30-9pm led by several young adult graduate students at our parish's FST theology program. Together, they discuss relevant and current young-adult concerns in living our Catholic faith, and dive deep into ideas of prayer, Scripture, Christian witness, and more. The young adults conclude with the celebration of the holy Mass for a truly worthwhile experience!

These gatherings are unique for several reasons:

1) Exclusively for young adults; many young adults try to find community in serving at youth programs, but this is exclusively for young Catholics in college, professional life, and young parents.

2) The graduate program: FST is right on our parish grounds and has fostered highly-educated young adults in the field of faith. These young adults have chosen to serve the "solid food" of faith to their own generation, drawing from their Masters education.

3) MASS! Nothing makes our gatherings more intimate and significant that celebrating Mass in the privacy of the St Clare Chapel, or behind locked doors in the Old Mission Church.

Young Adult Gatherings!

This July, several new candidates will be making their Religious Profession into the Mission San Luis Rey Secular Franciscan Order.

The Fraternity generally meets on the first Sunday of the month. You can look for us at the 10:00am Mass at the Serra Center and later for communal prayer in the St. Clare Chapel. Other events and ongoing religious formation occur at various times throughout the month.

Christmas in July

The annual Old Mission Montessori School (OMMS) “Christmas in July” artisan fair boasts the handiwork of more than 150 artisan booths selling arts and crafts. Top that off with a variety of foods, local talent, and a spectacular kids’ zone, and you have a community event that draws artists, families, and visitors from across Southern California and beyond. Also, back by popular demand, Christmas in July will co-locate with a huge carnival with rides, games, and food.

Each year, carefully selected artisans dot the grounds of the historic Mission San Luis Rey Parish – selling everything from seasonal décor to custom jewelry to woodworking. In addition to handmade items, the event offers a farmers’ market full of fresh flowers and locally grown fruits and vegetables; the popular Sister Gladys’ rummage sale; and homemade baked goods, ethnic foods, as well as traditional festival favorites such as snow cones and hotdogs. Dancers, singers, and karate studios grace the entertainment stage throughout the weekend. And, the silent auction on Saturday and live auction on Sunday always get people excited, especially when they scoop up some great deals.

One warning – give yourself the gift of time at this event. Time to browse. Time to try on. Time to watch and listen. Time to take it all in. This is a feast for your eyes, ears and heart. The event dates back to 1977, so you know the parents and staff of the Old Mission Montessori School have had years to perfect the atmosphere and the sense of fun. The fact that it’s a fundraiser for education is icing on a sweet cake of a weekend.

Bring: a Japanese parasol/hat/glasses to keep off the sun; sunscreen; comfy shoes, plenty of change and small bills and a sturdy shopping bag. Also clean out the car trunk to fit the goodies your find!

The event is free and open to the public. A $2 parking donation is appreciated.
