The Parthenon• The parthenon was made for Athena, by the people

of Athens to worship Athena. Athena was the guardian god of Athens, after she won a competition against Poseidon to be the protector of the city. The construction of the Parthenon started in 447 B.C and finished in 432 B.C.

• The Acropolis: the Acropolis is the flat-topped part rock that rises above the sea in Greece.

• The Parthenon is made up of Doric columns• The Frieze: the frieze runs around the edges of the

temple wall, it depicts musicians, horsemen and sacrificed animals.

• The statue of Athena: the statue of Athena is adorned with gold, ivory and other precious stones.

• This shows how much the Greeks valued religion. They built a beautiful temple for their goddess above the city.

The Athena Parthenos by Phidias

• The literal translation of Athena parthenos

• The Athena parthenos is housed in the parthenon

• There is many replicas of this famous statues

• It is described by the historian Pausanias as; “The statue itself is made of ivory silver and gold. On the middle of her helmet is placed a likeness of the Sphinx ... and on either side of the helmet are griffins in relief. ... The statue of Athena is upright, with a tunic reaching to the feet, and on her breast the head of Medusa is worked in ivory. She holds a statue of Victory about four cubits high, and in the other hand a spear; at her feet lies a shield and near the spear is a serpent. This serpent would be Erichthonius. On the pedestal is the birth of Pandora in relief.[5]

What do we learn?

• We learn from all of these statues, temples etc. that the greeks were very focused on worshipping their gods and building extravagant temple as gifts for their gods. They hoped that by doing this they would get protection from the gods. In particula
