Passover – Some Background1. Recalls their freedom from Egypt

2. “Part” (1st day) of the 7 day Feast of Unleavened Bread (Req’d)

3. Pasach – “spread wings around to protect”(read Matt 23:37-38)

Matt 23:37-3837 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the

prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord (Psa 118).

Psa 118: 25-28“Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD,

I beseech thee, send now prosperity. Blessed be he

that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have

blessed you out of the house of the LORD. God is

the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the

sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.

Thou art my God…”

3. Paschal lamb represented delivery from judgement AND sustaining meal for journey

4. Consume all of it this night

5. Blood on the lintels “when I see the blood”


6. Unleavened bread represented hurried flight AND a set apart, holy people

7. The search to remove leaven became key part of preparations(Read Ezek 34:11; Psa 139:23,24)

Ezek 34:11“For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will

both search my sheep, and seek them out.”

Psa 139:23,24“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and

know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked

way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

7. The search to remove leaven became key part of preparations(Ezek 34:10-12; Psa 139:1,23,24)

8. The bitter herbs were to remember what slavery was like

11. Passover was the premier Jewish festival

12. Ex 6:7 is at least one of the key passages of the OT (perhaps THE key verse of scripture).

Ex 6:6“Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the

Lord, and

I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and

I will rid you out of their bondage, and

I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:”

Ex 6:7“And

I will take you to me for a people, and I will be

to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the

LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under

the burdens of the Egyptians.”

Matt 26 17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened

bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover?

18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.

19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.


2. Contention about who is the greatest (having to do with the seating arrangements!) -Lk

Lk 22:24 “And there was also a strife among them,

which of them should be accounted the

greatest.”

(who should have the chief seats!)



3. Dismantling of the world's power system among the saints (among you it shall not be so) -Lk

Lk 22:25-27 25 And he said unto them, The kings of the

Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.

26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.

27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.”




4. Disciples granted twelve thrones over the tribes of Israel in the Kingdom (yet to come) -Lk

Lk 22:28-30 28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my

temptations.

29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;

30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

5. Jesus takes on the role of lowest house servant and washes the disciple's feet -Jn

Jn 13:4,5,13 4 He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. 5 After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.

7. Sop given (Judas last chance to repent) -Jn

Matt 26 23 And he answered and said, He that

dippeth his hand with me in the dish, the same shall betray me.

24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

25 Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.

Matt 26 31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be

offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

32 But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.

conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Matt 26 29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of

this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.

30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

I Cor 1126 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this

cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.



13. A new commandment I give you (love one another) –Jn

Jn 13:34“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”Jn 17:20-22Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
