Abhiram das
Thank you for your important questions. I
reconfirm what I said in my earlier interview. When
I heard Srila Prabhupada say this, I wrote it in my
diary on that same day and the dairy is still with
me. By way of being a little more precise, here is
how I heard it, repeated again for you and
posterity;
Abhiram das
We were sitting in the drawing room of His Divine
Grace's cottage in Vrindaban, summer of 1977,
before going to London. TKG, myself and I believe
Brahmananda were in the room, as well as
Pradumna (who was darting in and out in his usual
style) Srila Prabhupada was speaking a little about
his health condition and indicating that it was
probably fatal he said;
Abhiram das
..." na socati na kankcati - I have no hankering orlamentation” (then a reflective pause) and then;"no, I have one lamentation.....” To this,Brahmananda replied; "because you have notfinished Srimad Bhagavatam, Srila Prabhupada"and Srila Prabhupada replied instantly; “No, 50%of my work is incomplete, because I have notestablished varnashram." (I have heard credibleaccounts of HDG saying such things on otheroccasions, but this was said in front of me)

Abhiram das
"On the next occasion, some time later, I was withSrila Prabhupada in his room when he made thestatement, 'Fifty percent of my work is not completebecause I have not established varnasrama’.”
—Telephone Interview with Abhirama dasa,
Vrindavan, India 18 February 1996.
(Interviewer: Hare Krishna dasi)
HH Bhakti Charu SwamiThe actual version is, I used to be with Srila Prabhupada at
night from 12 to 2am. One night Srila Prabhupada could not
sleep and I was massaging his feet, at that time he was
lamenting that his health is so bad and he had so much to do.
I tried to console him saying, "Srila Prabhupada, what you
have is beyond anyone's imagination. You should not feel
that there is anything more to be done. Now you should just
relax.”
Then Srila Prabhupada told me, "What I have done is 50% the
other 50% is to establish Varnasrama. Not that everyone will
become a devotee. Those who won't become devotees, for
them we need Varnasrama.”

Bhavananda das
Yes, Prabhupada definitely said half my work
remains to be done, Farms and Varnashrama.

HH Lokanath Swami
I did not hear it directly from Srila Prabhupada.
It came to me by word of mouth and it is the
popular understanding.

Bhakti Tirtha Swami Maharaja
"I was just discussing two years [1994?] ago with
Nanda Kumara dasa in Arizona. He was telling me
that Prabhupada personally told him that in our
lifetime, we would see the establishment of the
varnasrama-dharma.”
(June 1996, Gita-nagari Farm)
VD 5: Monteal, July 16, 1968: Room Conversation
Jagadish das
"We are about to embark on a new phase of our
movement: varnasrama"
Prabhupada to Jagadisa dasa, who was taking
Srila Prabhupada to the train to Allahabad
(January 1977)
What is that 50%?
●The fourth wave
●Only head !!!!!!
the rest of the
social body ???
The fourth wave
●Education- gurukulas,
varnasrama colleges
●Village or farm Communities
●Cow protection
●Self sufficiency
●Localized economics
And more….
The Fourth Wave
The Rest of the Social Body The head is important but we do need
the other parts of the body too.
Brahmana Kshatriya, Vaisya, Sudra
The Rest of the Social Body
Most of the activities and services in ISKCON
are temple based and are brahminical.
And, “Kalau sudra sambhava”, not all devotees are fit for brahminical services.
na buddhi-bhedaà janayed
ajïänäà karma-saìginäm
joñayet sarva-karmäëi
vidvän yuktaù samäcaran
So as not to disrupt the minds of ignorant men attached to the fruitiveresults of prescribed duties, a learned person should not induce themto stop work. Rather, by working in the spirit of devotion, he shouldengage them in all sorts of activities [for the gradual development ofKrishna consciousness].
The Rest of the Social Body
Scope for Kshatriya, Vaisya and Sudra Services
Catur-varnyam maya srstam [Bg. 4.13].
Unless in the human society the varnasrama system is introduced, no scheme or social order, health order or any order, political order, will be successful.
—Room Conversation, Vrindavan 18 October 1977
For this to happen …
Shift is a must :
From Urban to Rural living
“Nobody should take to very hardship labor. The moderncivilization has discovered severe types of dangerousindustries, and laborers are attracted for high wages. Butthey should not accept such work. Then naturally therewill be less capitalistic idea. Because the laborercooperates, therefore demoniac persons they takeadvantage and make unnecessarily increase of artificialdemands of the body. Better one should be satisfied withagricultural produce than go into large cities to beengaged in industry. Peaceful life depending onagricultural produce can bring him real happiness andprosperity, not otherwise. (cont’d)
For this to happen …
Shift is a must :
From Urban to Rural living
The more persons will be satisfied at their home, with
home economics, not to go outside the home, that is
peaceful life. In India, Mahatma Gandhi tried to
organize villages in that way so that not to drag the
people to the town. So peaceful atmosphere can be
attained only when there is large scale village
organization, actually village life. Not to borrow the
ideas from the cities in the village life; poet Cooper
said that country is made by God, and the cities and
towns are made by man. So that is the distinction.
(Letter to: Rayarama, Seattle,17 October, 1968)
Reasons
Contaminated Cities
More than100 years ago Srila Gaura kisora dasa
babaji Maharaj warned Srila Bhaktisiddhanta
Saraswati maharaj about the city contamination
while he was setting out for preaching in Calcutta.
Gross - food, water and air pollution
bhoga, health of devotees
Subtle - Rajasic and tamasic activities
grihastas work areas (family quarrels, divorce etc.)
brahmacaris unengaged -Management problems in
the asramas
Srila Prabhupada gave us:
Best process- chanting the holy names
Best literature
Best food
Best life style
But still many fall downs ???????????
kama esa krodha esa
rajo-guna-samudbhavah
Influence of modes
Therefore shifting to
sattvik environment is a must.
Life style – Conflict
* Modern occupations are unnatural, stressful, and theyarouse more greed, envy and unhealthy competition
* People have to travel long distances to their workareas
* Ill means of earning - eg. Draupadi complainsBhismadeva what to speak of modern dayoccupations and earnings means
* Lesser opportunities (due to technologicaldevelopment) leading to unemployment
* Ultimately increasing crimes and unrest in the society
Solve many burning issues within
our ISKCON society and
society at large
Women – many unsolved issues get resolved when women arereinstated in their natural activities in rural setup
Children – replacing play schools, schools and colleges, moderneducation system with shikshalayas, gurukulas, varnasramacolleges and introducing vedic system of education
Oldage – old age homes and hospice can be replaced byVanaprasta ashram and other arrangements within the village
Cows – very dear to Krishna and without them all spiritual ritualsremain incomplete. Therefore they need to be specially cared forin the society
Brahmanas – guide the society in every aspect of life and theyexecute their duties without anxieties
Establishing Varnasrama-
A new Preaching Dimension
● Our very adoption of Varnasrama life style is in
itself preaching
(actions speak louder than words - simple living
and high thinking )
● Preaching to masses: who generally are not
exposed to Krishna consciousness, who are in
deep ignorance (who never volunteer to
participate in spiritual activities- busy karmis,
social workers etc.)
● People of other faiths (christians, muslims etc.)
and communities considered out-castes of the
society could also be engaged in Krishna
conscious activities
Practically what can one do?
● Use cow products
● Asking for ahimsa milk
● Training children in cow care
Practically what can one do?
● Using only organic food
● Kitchen gardens, terrace gardens
● Kambha composting
Practically what can one do?
● Creating alternative traditional educational
facilities locally and encouraging the ‘willing’
parents to send their wards to such educational
institutes
Practically what can one do?
● Research
Practically what can one do?
Connecting urban and rural preaching
“So produce your own food
and produce your own
cloth. Don't waste time for
luxuries, and chant Hare
Krishna. This is success of
life.”
