The Lord’s PrayerLead Us Not Into Temptation
Matthew 6:13 "Lead us not into temptation..."
What’s The Difference Between Temptation And
Testing?
1.To entice to do evil.
1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.
God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
2.To put to the test.
Genesis 22:1 God tested Abraham ...
James 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," ... he himself tempts no one.
Does God Ever Lead UsInto Temptation?
1.God leads some into temptation objectively.
Job 1:12 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger."
Joel 1:4 What the locust swarm has left the great locusts have eaten; what the great locusts have left the young locusts have eaten; what the young locusts have left other locusts have eaten.
2.God leads some into temptation permissively.
Luke 22:31 "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat,
32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers."
33 Peter said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death."
34 Jesus said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me."
3.God leads some to temptation judicially.
Romans 1:24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies…
Romans 1:26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions….
Romans 1:28 ...God gave them up to a debased mind …
Why would God Lead UsInto Temptation?
1.God uses this to reveal to us our own weakness.
2 Kings 20:13 Hezekiah received the messengers and showed them all that was in his storehouses-
the silver, the gold, the spices and the fine oil--his armory and everything found among his treasures.
2 Kings 20:16 Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, "Hear the word of the LORD:
17 The time will surely come when everything in your palace, and all that your fathers have stored up until this day, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left…
2 Chronicles 32:31 And so in the matter of the envoys of the princes of Babylon, who had been sent to him to inquire about the sign that had been done in the land,
God left him to himself, in order to test him and to know all that was in his heart.
2.God tests us to teach us the need to watch and pray.
Matthew 26:41 "Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
3.God tests us that we might find our need of His armor!
Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
What Exactly Are We Praying
For in Petition #5?
1.We pray to be spared from the evil of temptations.
2.If we are led into temptation, that we would not yield to it.
TEMPTATION:James 1:14 ...each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
TEMPTATION• A simple, evil thought.• A strong imagination.• Delight in viewing it.• Toying with the thought.• Consent of the will to act.
What Is Our Duty Regarding Temptation?
1.Avoid places and people that would allure us into sin.
Proverbs 1:10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves!
2.Steadfastly resist the devil.
James 4:6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.
3.Submit to God's grace.
4.Confess any known sin to God.
James 4:8 ...Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
