In order to fulfill the prerequisites for the accomplishment of dhyana, there are three steps to follow:

Step 1. To Reprimand the Five DesiresStep 2. To Forsake the Five Coverings or VeilsStep 3. To Perform the Five Practices

There are five kinds of “Coverings” that can envelop our mind in the darkness of Ignorance; they are:

(1) The Covering of Avarice (Greed or Attachment)(2) The Covering of Aversion (Detestation or Hate)(3) The Covering of Sleep(4) The Covering of Restlessness(5) The Covering of Doubt (or Skepticism concerning the Dharma)

1. Placement, or fixing the Mind

3. Patch-like Placement

4. Close Placement or Good Fixation

5. Subduing or Becoming Disciplined

6. Pacifying or Becoming Peaceful

7. Fully Pacifying or Becoming Very Pacified

8. Becoming Single-Pointed

9. Fixed Absorption or Meditative Equipoise

10.Four Levels of Form Plane and Four Levels of Formless Plane

I. Anapanasati — to be Mindfulness on Breathing to destroy Wandering.

II. The Contemplation of Uncleanliness — to destroy Attachments or Avarice.

III. The Contemplation of the “Twelve Links” — to destroy Ignorance.

IV. The Contemplation of Compassion — to destroy Aversions and Hate.

V. The Contemplation of Buddha’s Merits — to destroy Heavy Black Karma.

yuàn xiāo sān zhàng zhū fán năo

願消三障諸煩惱We wish to rid ourselves of the three hindrances and all klesas.

yuàn dé zhì huì zhēn míng lĭao

願得智慧真明了We wish to gain wisdom and real understanding.

pŭ yuàn zuì zhàng xī xiāo chú

普願罪障悉消除 We wish all sinful hindrances to be totally eradicated.

shì shì cháng xíng pú sà dào

世世常行菩薩道In one life after another we always follow Bodhisattvas’ paths.
