Letter from the Minister

Dear Friends

What a wonderful summer we have had!Although the weather has had its ups and downs, the Olympics far surpassed our expectations! And now the Paralympics begin.

If those who entered the Olympics worked hard, then ourParalympians will have overcome far more and worked far harder;and the team of people backing them will be far more specialised.

There is a wonderful Spirit for Life that exists in us all, that makesus all part of God’s world; the Spirit that stops us from giving upand being defeated by our difficulties, and instead fighting againstthem.

The Olympics gave us Team GB, we have Team HFC!

The Spirit that gives life and strength in so many ways to theParalympians gives life and strength to us too.

While we face difficulties we must gain strength from the Spiritthat gives us the joy of celebrating Baptisms, while we seek to findnew ways of reaching out to our community we must thank God’sSpirit for providing new ideas and ways of serving. Team HFC hasmuch to do, and we need to be getting on and doing it!

As we work towards new ways of serving, we need to be praying foreach other and supporting new initiatives as they come forward.

The Spirit of God helps us all to be more than we think we can be…let us all work towards Team HFC becoming Spirit filled and excitedby God’s plans.

Thank you to everyone for your generous cheque which I receivedwhen I retired as Church Secretary.

Over the years I enjoyed working with 4 Interim Moderators and 3Ministers and with all of you the members of the church.

I have bought a new garden shed as the old one had seen betterdays. I have also bought a new garden clock and patio table and 6chairs as we did not have any garden furniture.

Taking time to sit in the garden will be even nicer with all my gardentools neatly stored and a comfortable chair torelax in and watch time tick by.

Yours sincerely

Alistair.

Genealogy is my pastime - I shall not strayIt maketh me to lie down and examine half buried tombstonesIt leadeth me into still court housesIt restoreth my ancestral knowledgeIt leadeth me into the paths of census recordsAnd ships passenger listsFor my name sakeYet though I wade through the shadowsOf research libraries and microfilm readersI shall fear no discouragementFor the strong urge is with meFor the curiosity and motivation they comfort meIt demandeth preparation of storage spaceFor the acquisition of countless documentsIt anointeth my head with burning midnight oilMy family group sheet runneth overSurely birth, marriages and deathsShall follow me all the days of my lifeAnd I shall dwell in the house of a family tree seeker forever

Holiday From Home 2012

I believe it correct to say it was a fun week with something appealingto everyone in the programmes.

Each day started with tea/coffee and warm welcomeand afternoon refreshment was on offer for those whowanted further sustenance later in the day.Interesting quizzes on the Monday morning, for a changeyielded a high number of correct answers with team ‘The

4 stooges’ winning. Following a very satisfying lunch we were treatedto a demonstration of International Dance. The invitation to join inwas taken up by some and the more nimble showed what theycould do.

Though not as adept as the ladies the men took part inthe flower arranging one morning and their handiworkno doubt graced a table at home for a while.

It is always great to hear excellentmusicians and we were treated to anafternoon of different music on the piano, recorders and guitar as well as somepoetry and prose and song by a group

called ‘The Troubadours’ which came from Bromley.Wednesday saw us leaving the church on yet another sunny day and

making our way to Eltham Palace, indeed a very palatial place withlovely gardens which has a chequered history stretching back many

years to Henry 8th, the Courtauld family, with part of theRAF services there and now cared for by English HeritageThe less mobile had the benefit ofwheelchairs and an army of pushers toferry them around. Lunch on the lawn wasgreat and a little later that afternoon wemet up again at a nearby café for a lovelycream tea. The bathroom scales groaned

that evening when I got home.Glass painting started the fourth day using flower

vases, candle holders and the like with each onetaking part showing their artisticprowess with some creating theirown designs. Great fun. Roland onpiano accompanied by Dave onthe accordion led the afternoon ‘sing-a-long’ withsongs from Bill.

The week seemed to fly by and on the final day in themorning we had two interesting talks, the first on keepingphysically and mentally fit. A very good speaker and very

easy to follow. The second speaker spoke tous about Rogue Traders and Scams thatwere prevalent at the current time givingadvice of what to do and not to do.After the final lunch of the week provided by the local

Fish and Chip shop we relaxed with Bingo. In conclusion it must be said the week heard plenty of

laughter and good humour prevailed with a lot ofinteraction with people never met before. There were agoodly number of regulars attending each day added toby others from time to time. It must be recorded that the planningand set up of the week and its programmes obviously showed greatthought and organisation and as one of those benefiting it wasgreatly appreciated. Sue I believe had more than one finger in thepie here! The army of helpers drawn from here, there and it seemedeverywhere greatly enhanced all that was going on. The meals weresuperb. Those responsible for transport deserve special thanks inparticular Colin and Alan who drove the minibus and their escorts aswell as those bringing others in their cars.

Will there be another ‘Holiday from Home’ next year? “Hope so” werethe words uttered by many as they left.

The Directors Lunch Clubwith a special guest

Our table was booked for the 31st of July at The King’s Head inShoreham.

Luckily, we had a view of the television which was showing live actionfrom the Olympics - the show jumping. However, exciting as theevent was, we had a more tangible reminder of the Olympics.

Brenda Cordingley was with us as the guest of honouralong with the Olympic torch which she had carriedin the Hythe stage of the torch relay.

Brenda told us about the day and how well the relayrunners were looked after by the organisers.

In Brenda’s words, “It was a wonderful day and I'msure will be well publicised!! I had loads of

supporters as all myfamily were there, theHayes Minibus fromthe church, friends from the HorticulturalSociety and other friends.”Brenda told us that when she visitsschools and groups to talk about therelay, people can relate more closely tothe Olympic ethos when they can seeand touch the torch. This is, in reality apart of the Olympic legacy - toencourage and inspire people to alead better lives.Oh, by the way, the lunch was deliciousand filling!

He didn't like the casseroleAnd he didn't like my cake,He said my biscuits were too hardNot like his mother used to make.

I didn't perk the coffee rightHe didn't like the stew,I didn't mend his socksThe way his mother used to do.

I pondered for an answerI was looking for a clue. Then I turned around and

smacked him....Like his mother used to do.

The tide of life, swift always in its course,May run in cities with a brisker force,But nowhere with a current so serene,Or half so clear, as in a rural scene.

The way things once wereFrom The Nottinghamshire Almanac for September 1841.

Passages transcribed as shown Ed

Is your church a Fairtrade church?By Ricarda Witcombe (From Sunday link - 5th August 2012)

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, localsustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in thedeveloping world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices(which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtradeaddresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionallydiscriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables themto improve their position and have more control over their lives.

Churches have a significant role to play in promoting Fairtrade andyours can start by deciding to be a Fairtrade church. You need toagree to three goals:

• Use Fairtrade tea and coffee after services and in all meetings forwhich you have responsibility.

• Move forward on using other Fairtrade products such as sugar, biscuits and fruit.

• Promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and during the yearthrough events, worship and other activities whenever possible.

Unwanted telephone sales callsThe Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free service. It is the officialcentral opt out register on which you can record your preference notto receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls. It is a legal requirementthat all organisations (including charities, voluntary organisations andpolitical parties) do not make such calls to numbers registered on theTPS unless they have your consent to do so.

Organisations with which you have an ongoing relationship, forexample those who regard you as a customer, (or in the case ofcharities - a donor) may well gather your consent during the earlystages of your relationship with them and will therefore be entitled tocall you even if your number is registered on TPS, unless you havepreviously told them specifically that you object to them calling youfor marketing purposes.

The TPS can accept the registration of mobile telephone numbers, however it is important to note that this will prevent the receipt ofmarketing voice calls but not SMS (text) messages. If you wish to stopreceiving SMS marketing messages, please send an 'opt-out' requestto the company involved.

As TPS registration only prevents marketing calls, organisations will stillbe able to call you for the purposes of genuine market research.

Website of the MonthHayes

A History of a Kentish VillageLocal historians, Jean Wilson and the late Trevor Woodman, have eachspent over 30 years researching the local area, and now their two volumehistory has just been published. The first volume covers the time from theStone Age to 1914, and the second from 1914 to modern times.

The volumes reveal the changes in Hayes from the time when woollymammoths roamed the land ,to the present day. It is a story of rich andpoor, of famous and infamous. It shows the resilience of the communityas it responded to the challenges of wars, poverty and plague, thecoming of the railway, and the housing developments of the 1930s.

The two volume set costs £25 - payment by cash or cheque madepayable to J. M. Wilson. They are available from 8, Redgate Drive, Hayes,Kent , BR2 7BT, or from Elizabeth Woodman at 19, Hayes Hill Road, Hayes,Kent BR2 7HH (telephone 020 8462 1003). Please supply your contactdetails if free delivery within Hayes is required.

During July, Ria, an Avaaz member in the UK, sent these words:"I am 65 years old and have terminal cancer and not long to live.I can do very little practically because of this. The state of the worldand the amount of violence and injustice breaks my heart. Throughyour organisation even I can make a difference and try to help makethis world a better place for others before I leave it. This is a positiveand peaceful action which gives me great comfort. I am no longerhelpless and powerless, I can vote, I have power to change thingseven now.Thank you for giving me this priceless opportunity at such a time as this.Peace and democracy in Syria would be such a fantastic 'goingaway present'. However, this was really just to say say thank you forgiving so many people who care a voice which is now heard worldwide. 15,000,000! What a voice to be reckoned with. Thanks to you all."

When Avaaz launched five years ago we were told it would be impossibleto build a global community based on shared values across bordersbecause we are so different. The connections we share across age, nationality, race, and religion are immeasurably more powerful thananything that could divide us. And week after week we unite to changeour world, and we win.

60 years of the NHS

Nurse - I'll just check her notes. I'm pleased to say that Mrs Tiptree'sconditioned has improved. She has regained her appetite, hertemperature has steadied and after some routine checkstonight, she should be well enough to go home tomorrow.

Lady - Oh that's wonderful news, I'm so happy, thank you ever somuch!

Nurse - You seem very relieved, are you a close friend or relative?Lady - No, I'm Mrs Tiptree in room 2b. Nobody tells you anything at all

in here.

Bible Society UpdateA letter from the Bible Society which highlights the plight of Syrianrefugees fleeing into other countries, particularly Jordan, spurred meinto action. With gifts from the Saturday and Sunday coffee morningsand the Contact Group I sent a cheque for £70 in July.

Since the “Arab Spring”, the underground church in North Africa andthe Middle East is growing and has many new opportunities to shareGod’s Word. The projects planned are more translation, scripturedistribution through bookshops and refugee camps, creating safeplaces where groups can read and discuss God’s Word, providingaffordable scriptures, and practical work where needed.

There is a great spiritual hunger for God’s Word, but much fear andprejudice to overcome.

Thank you for supporting this vital work. Do pray for our brothers andsisters in Christ in these areas.

Final ThoughtThe Knots Prayer

Dear God,Please untie the knots in my mind,my heart and my life.Remove the have nots, the can nots, and the do notsthat I have in my mind.

Erase the will nots, may nots, might nots that may finda home in my heart.

Release me from the could nots, would nots andshould nots that obstruct my life.

And most of all,Dear God,I ask that you remove from my mind,my heart and my life all of the “am nots”that I have allowed to hold me back, especially the thought thatI am not good enough.

Amen
