2 Samuel 9 1 And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake?

David was looking for someone to show kindness to.

That’s a good mindset.

Don’t go through life with blinders on.

Page 3: 2 samuel 9a mephibosheth

3

David had made a vow to Jonathan to always be good to him and his descendants.

1 Samuel 20:14-16

We must keep our promises, to both God and man.

Page 4: 2 samuel 9a mephibosheth

4

It was customary for a new king to kill the entire family of the old king,

To remove any threat to his throne.

But David was not like the usual kings.

David was a man of God.

Even when a son inherited his daddy’s throne, they would often kill their brothers and other kin.

Page 5: 2 samuel 9a mephibosheth

5

Rather than looking to kill all the descendants of Saul, David was looking to show kindness –

For the sake of his friendship with Jonathan.

2 Corinthians 6 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Romans 12 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's Will is -- His good, pleasing and perfect Will. (NIV)

Just as David was not like other kings, we must choose not to be like the people of this world.

Page 7: 2 samuel 9a mephibosheth

7

Many people when they sew use a pattern.

The garment they make will look just like the pattern.

We must not use the pattern of this world to shape our own

lives or the lives of our children.

James 3 15-16 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

James 3 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

BIG Difference!Which pattern would you want to conform to?

2 And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Zi ba. And when they had called him unto David, the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he. 3 And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.

Saul’s servants had hidden Mephibosheth to protect him from David,

when Saul and Jonathan were killed in battle.

But Ziba has learned to trust David.

Page 10: 2 samuel 9a mephibosheth

10

4 And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Ma chir, the son of Ammiel, in Lo de bar. 5 Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Ma chir, the son of Ammiel, from Lo de bar.

David didn’t just think about it, and ask about it; he sent for him and fetched him to the palace.

Follow through!

6 Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant! 7 And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father's sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.

Not for anything Phib had done -- for

Jonathan’s sake.

Humility

God saves us for Jesus’

sake!!

Page 12: 2 samuel 9a mephibosheth

12

8 And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?

Not only the right physical position, but the right mindset.

Humility has to be in the mind and heart to be genuine.

Phib was not worthy, but Jonathan was.

Page 13: 2 samuel 9a mephibosheth

9 Then the king called to Ziba, Saul's servant, and said unto him, I have given unto thy master's son all that pertained to Saul and to all his house. 10 Thou therefore, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him, and thou shalt bring in the fruits, that thy master's son may have food to eat: but Mephibosheth thy master's son shall eat bread always at my table. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

New jobs for all of them.

Page 14: 2 samuel 9a mephibosheth

14

11 Then said Ziba unto the king, According to all that my lord the king hath commanded his servant, so shall thy servant do. As for Mephibosheth, said the king, he shall eat at my table, as one of the king's sons.

ObedienceZiba held no reservations.

ALL that you command -- I will do!!

Will you say that to the Lord, and mean it.

Page 15: 2 samuel 9a mephibosheth

15

12 And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Micha. And all that dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants unto Mephibosheth.

Mephibosheth had a wife and son, and David brought them into the palace.

No longer a man hiding in fear for his life,Mephibosheth became a man respected as a

favorite of the king and a man of wealth.

Each of us is one of God’s favorites!

Page 16: 2 samuel 9a mephibosheth

16

13 So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did eat continually at the king's table; and was lame on both his feet.

David wasn’t afraid to show kindness to one of Saul’s grandsons and a great-grandson.

God had raised him up, and only God could bring him low.

1 Timothy 6 17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, Who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. {NIV}

Matthew 6:19-21 19 "Don’t store up treasures here on earth where they can erode away or may be stolen. 20 Store them in Heaven where they will never lose their value and are safe from thieves. 21 If your profits are in Heaven, your heart will be there too.” (TLB)

This world is not our home, we’re only passing through. Our treasure are laid

up somewhere beyond the blue.
