2 Samuel 16 1 And when David was a little past the top of the hill, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and an hundred bunches of raisins, and an hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine.

Mephibosheth was Saul’s grandson. David had been very kind to him

after Saul’s death,

For Jonathan’s sake.

In blessing Mephibosheth, David also blessed Saul’s old servant Ziba with better employment.

Ziba remembered and was grateful.

2 And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses be for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as be faint in the wilderness may drink. He repaid David’s previous kindness unto him with

kindnesses of his own unto David –

In his time of trouble.

3 And the king said, And where is thy master's son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem: for he said, Today shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father.

Ungrateful

Mephibosheth hoped that in the turmoil of revolution,

He might end up on the throne.

4 Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine are all that pertained unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I humbly beseech thee that I may find grace in thy sight, my lord, O king.

(TLB) 4 "In that case," the king told Ziba, "I give you everything he owns." "Thank you, thank you, sir," Ziba replied.

At this point David is in control of

nothing. Both David and Ziba are demonstrating faith in God to restore David to the throne.

We live by faith – not by sight.

When things look hopeless, have faith in God.

See the contrasts between men in this passage.

Grateful

Of Ziba, flowing out of faith in God.

Ungrateful

Of Mephibosheth flowing out of

fleshly ambition.

Ziba will be rewarded beyond his wildest dreams in the coming future of David’s kingdom.

David spared Mephibosheth when he returned to Jerusalem, but restored only half of his property.

Phib claimed to have been deceived by Ziba.

Lord, give me a heart like David.

Stand with the godly and right,

especially when they are in hard times.

Remember with gratitude the good that people have done, and stand with them.

Be loyal to your family, your friends, your church, and your God.

Don’t be ruled by selfish ambition. Philippian 2:3

Think of other folks.

Psalm 100 1 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. 2 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before His Presence with singing. 3 Know ye that the LORD He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. 4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His Name. 5 For the LORD is good; His Mercy is everlasting; and His Truth endureth to all generations.

When we understand that it is God Who hath made us, and not we ourselves –

We will quit going our own way, doing our own thing.

Proverbs 1 30-31 and you turned your back on Me, spurning My advice. That is why you must eat the bitter fruit of having your own way and experience the full terrors of the pathway you have chosen. (TLB)

Colossians 3 12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love (agape), which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

Hebrews 13 15 By Him (Jesus) therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His Name.

Perfect PraiseCount your blessings, and give

God thanks for them all.
