Background of Luke 9
v1-6 Sending Out The 12
1 When Jesus had called the Twelve
together, he gave them POWER and
AUTHORITY TO DRIVE OUT all
demons and TO CURE diseases,
2 and he sent them out TO PREACH the
kingdom of God and TO HEAL the
sick.
3 He told them: "Take nothing for the
journey — no staff, no bag, no bread,
no money, no extra tunic.”

until you leave that town.

the dust off your feet when you leave
their town, as a testimony against
them."
6 So they set out and went from village
to village, PREACHING the gospel
and HEALING people everywhere.

Scripture Reading : Luke 9:51-62
51 As the time approached for him to be
taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set
out for Jerusalem.
52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who
went into a Samaritan village to get
things ready for him;
53 but the people there did not welcome
him, because he was heading for
Jerusalem.

Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
Luke 9:54-56
v54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"
Ref Mark 3:17James son of Zebedee and his
brother John (to them he gave the
name Boanerges, which means ‘Sons
of Thunder’)
The same John in v49 – zealous for
Christ
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
What : REJECT Jesus !
RESPONSE : (KJV) “Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did”
Ref: 2 Kings Chp 1 - King Ahaziah
Why : To Protect The Name of Christ
Q: Is this the way of Jesus ?
v5 “If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them."
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
v55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them,
V55* (NKJV) But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.”
‘Rebuked’ – same Gk word
v42 rebuked the unclean spirit
Q: Can you identify with John & James ?
When someone wrong us, do we silently in our hearts ‘call down fire from heaven’ ?
When we are ‘rejected’ ....
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
Lesson : Our ‘Purpose’ may be good But our ‘Practice’ can be bad
V56* NKJV “For the Son of man did not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them.” Danger of ‘Offensive Christianity’
‘Overzealous Christianity’In our Discipleship ...In Responding to Christ’s Call1. COMPASSION – not Condemnation
1. COMPASSION – not Condemnation
Luke 10:30 ….
Parable of the
Good Samaritan
Acts 8
v4 : Philip in Samaria
V14 ‘When the apostles in
Jerusalem heard that Samaria had
accepted the word of God, they
sent Peter and John to Samaria’
v56 and they went to another village.

Three Encounters With Jesus ....
1st : Luke 9:57-58
57 As they were walking along the road,
a man said to him, "I will follow you
wherever you go."
58 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and
birds of the air have nests, but the Son
of Man has no place to lay his head.“
Ref Matt 8:19 – ‘teacher of the Law’ or
Scribe
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
Confident Declaration : “I will follow you wherever you go.”
Q: Did this scribe know what he was
saying ?
Q: Did he consider the implications ?
Jesus can see his true self ...
Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head”
Being frank, real, transparent
Please consider carefully
It will not be comfortable
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
2. COMMITMENT – not Comfort
Luke 9:23-24
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.”
There is always a Cost To
COMMITMENT
As it was then ….so it is NOW
Liena’s Prayer - video
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
2nd Man - Luke 9:59-60
59 He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
Different ….
It was Jesus who called him …
Jesus must have seen something in him ...
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
Jesus: “Follow me.”
Man: “Lord, first let me go and
bury my father.”
Jesus: “Let the dead bury their own
dead, but you go and proclaim
the kingdom of God.”
Q: Was Jesus being - inconsiderate ?
- insensitive ?
- ‘anti-family’ ?
Q: What about the 5th Commandment ?
What was Jesus actually saying ….
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
Jewish practice : Bury within the same
day…
Therefore unlikely the man’s father just
died that day…
Other explanations …
a. The man’s father had not yet died …Wait until my father dies ....Not sure how old the father is …
or how ‘sickly’ the father is …b. If he’s the oldest son …c. One-year Jewish re-burial ritual...
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s CallWhat the man was actually saying …• wait, not now…
• my family responsibilities comes first ...
• Jesus your call can wait until I’m ready...
Jesus knew exactly what the man was saying
– so his reply.
So in our Discipleship ...
In Responding to Christ’s Call
3. NOW – not LATER
• Proclaiming God’s Kingdom comes 1st
• Matt 6:33 “But seek first his kingdom
and his righteousness...”
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
Matt 10:37 "Anyone who loves their father or
mother more than me is not worthy of me;
anyone who loves their son or daughter
more than me is not worthy of me.”
Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to me and does
not hate father and mother, wife and
children, brothers and sisters--yes, even
their own life--such a person cannot be my
disciple.”
NLT: "If you want to be my disciple, you must
hate everyone else by comparison…
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
Reassurance : Luke 18:28-30
Peter said to him, "We have left all we
had to follow you!"
"I tell you the truth," Jesus said to them,
"no one who has left home or wife or
brothers or parents or children for the
sake of the kingdom of God will fail to
receive many times as much in this
age and, in the age to come, eternal
life."
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
COMMITMENT is important.
TIMING is equally important.
Procrastination …
‘later Lord, not now’
‘Lord let me have enough first, then …’
‘Lord my children are still small…’
‘Lord my aged parents …’
God’s call …
to FOLLOW HIM, be His Disciple...
is NOW – not LATER
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
3rd Man - Luke 9:61-62
61 Still another said, "I will follow you,
Lord; but first let me go back and say
good-by to my family."
62 Jesus replied, "No one who puts his
hand to the plow and looks back is fit
for service in the kingdom of God.“
Q: Is it wrong to let our families know…
Is it wrong to say goodbye …
Ref 1 Kings 19:20 – Elijah & Elisha
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
Man : "I will follow you, LORD; BUT FIRST let me go back and say good-by to my family."
? Oxy-moronJesus : “No one who puts a hand to the plow
and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God”
• Agricultural community• In plowing ...Modern day equivalent:
• Driving a car ...Q: Can we drive a car looking all the time at
the rear-view mirror ?
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
Similarly in Serving God
in our Discipleship ...
in Responding to Christ’s Call
4. SINGLE-MINDED –
not DOUBLE-MINDED
Consider:
James 1:8 “A double minded man is
unstable in all his ways.” (KJV)
Matt 6:24 "No one can serve two
masters....”
Be Christ’s Disciples – Responding to Christ’s Call
FOUR “Considerations” For Discipleship
1. COMPASSION – not Condemnation
2. COMMITMENT – not Comfort
3. NOW – not Later
4. SINGLE-MINDED – Not Double-Minded
Be Christ’s Disciples –Responding to Christ’s Call
• A Simple Testimony
Why Considerations 4 Discipleship?
NOTE:
“Different Strokes
For
Different Folks”
Different Strokes 4 Different Folks
God is UNCHANGING
God’s Commands are UNCHANGING
God Never Called anyone to be a ‘christian’
God’s Call To Everyone Is To Be A DISCIPLE
God Call To Discipleship is UNCHANGING
BUT
God’s Demands On Discipleship Varies
God’s Call To Discipleship Is Tailor-Made
It Is INDIVIDUALISED
Different Strokes for Different Folks
Example : Rich Young Ruler : Lk 18, Mk 10, Mt 19
v22: “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me”
Different Strokes For Different Folks
In His Call of Matthew
Lk 5, Mk 2, Mt 9
After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,” Jesus said to him, and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.
Different Strokes For Different FolksIn the Call of Zaccheus
Luke 19
“Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today...Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Different Strokes For Different Folks
3 Rich Men
Same Call to Discipleship : “Follow
Me”
Different Demands
Different Results
God knows ...
what is hindering our walk with him ...
what is blocking our relationship with
him...
where & what our ‘treasures’ are ...
Considerations 4 Discipleship
Jesus knows…
Us …
Our hearts…
Our ‘treasures’...
Our ‘idols’…
His Call is still the same ...
- “Follow Me”
His Demands may be slightly Different
Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak
Company logo -
Reason : He had been ‘burned’ before
an earlier venture into slot machines
fizzled out and he took 2 yrs to pay of creditors
Ronald got ‘cold feet’ when Steve Jobs took
out loans for their 1st order and sold out …
A missed opportunity …
‘What If ??’ ….

Reflection :
We know from Scripture how John &
James changed in their outlook
towards Samaritans ...
Of the other 3 men who had an
encounter with Jesus ...
Did they ?
Did they not ?
We Do Not Know ...
Written for you and I ..... to respond...
Conclusion / Application
Christians ….
Vs Disciples ….
Ref Matt 28:18-20 Great Commission
V19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations….
Great Commission’s Call is to
‘make Disciples’
not ‘make christians’
Q: Are you a Disciple or a christian ?
Conclusion / Application
Q: What’s the Difference between being a
DISCIPLE and a christian ?
Answer :
Luke 9:23 Then he said to them ALL:
“Whoever wants to be my DISCIPLE
MUST DENY THEMSELVES and
TAKE UP THEIR CROSS DAILY and
FOLLOW ME”
A Disciple Lives A Life Of • Daily Denial• Faithful Following
Christ’s Call To DiscipleshipJesus today...
Has many who love his heavenly kingdom
But few who carry his cross;
Many who yearn for comfort,
Few who long for his distress,
Plenty of people he finds to share his banquet,
Few to share his fast;
Everyone desires to take part in his rejoicing,
But few are willing to suffer anything for his sake;
There are many who follow Jesus as far as the
breaking of bread,
Few as far as drinking the cup of suffering;
Many that revere his miracles,
Few that follow him in the indignity of the cross.Thomas Kempis – Imitation of Christ 15th Century
