Saul has been chosen to be

king of Israel.

Some good men are for him

and with him.

Sons of Belial are against

him.

Back home.

1 Samuel 11 1 Then Nahash

the Ammonite came up, and

encamped against Jabesh-

gilead: and all the men of

Jabesh said unto

Nahash, Make a covenant

with us, and we will serve

thee.Jabesh-Gilead was an

Israelite city on the east side

of the Jordan River --

In Ammonite territory.

4

Notice how easily the Israelites were willing to

submit to this Ammonite warlord.

They were so used to defeat that they had no will to

resist against overwhelming odds.

Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7

2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On

this condition will I make a covenant with you, that

I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a

reproach upon all Israel.

Not willing to settle for an easy victory,

Nahash was determined to humiliate Israel.

3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us

seven days' respite, that we may send messengers

unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no

man to save us, we will come out to thee. 4 Then

came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told

the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the

people lifted up their voices, and wept.

Amazingly Nahash was so cocky that he agreed.

He knew that Saul didn't even have an army.

Page 7: 1 samuel 11 don't be defeated

7

5 And, behold, Saul came after the

herd out of the field; and Saul

said, What aileth the people that

they weep? And they told him the

tidings of the men of Jabesh.

Saul had gone back to farming.

"What are they crying about?"

They told him.

Page 8: 1 samuel 11 don't be defeated

8

6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he

heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled

greatly.

I thought the Holy Spirit had already come upon

Saul when he prophesied with the prophets.

He did, but that's how it was in those days.

He came for a specific purpose and then withdrew.

7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and

hewed them in pieces, and sent them

throughout all the coasts of Israel by

the hands of

messengers, saying, Whosoever

cometh not forth after Saul and after

Samuel, so shall it be done unto his

oxen. And the fear of the Lord fell on

the people, and they came out with

one consent.

Page 10: 1 samuel 11 don't be defeated

10

Saul knew the people would not willingly come to

fight against Ammonites on the east side of Jordan.

"If you don't come, I'll destroy

your herds."

Page 11: 1 samuel 11 don't be defeated

11

8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the

children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and

the men of Judah thirty thousand. 9 And they said unto the messengers that

came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-

gilead, Tomorrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye

shall have help. And the messengers came and

shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

Page 12: 1 samuel 11 don't be defeated

12

10 Therefore the men of Jabesh

said (to Nahash the

Ammonite), Tomorrow we will

come out unto you, and ye

shall do with us all that

seemeth good unto you.

Page 13: 1 samuel 11 don't be defeated

13

11 And it was so on the

morrow, that Saul put the

people in three companies;

and they came into the midst

of the host in the morning

watch, and slew the

Ammonites until the heat of

the day: and it came to pass,

that they which remained

were scattered, so that two of

them were not left together.

Page 14: 1 samuel 11 don't be defeated

14

12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that

said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that

we may put them to death.

Page 15: 1 samuel 11 don't be defeated

15

13 And Saul said, There

shall not a man be put to

death this day: for today

the Lord hath wrought

salvation in Israel.

Page 16: 1 samuel 11 don't be defeated

16

14 Then said Samuel to the

people, Come, and let us go to

Gilgal, and renew the kingdom

there. 15 And all the people went

to Gilgal; and there they made

Saul king before the Lord in

Gilgal; and there they sacrificed

sacrifices of peace offerings

before the Lord; and there Saul

and all the men of Israel

rejoiced greatly.

Page 17: 1 samuel 11 don't be defeated

17

Saul had a good beginning as king of Israel.

Ecclesiastes 7 8 Better is the end of a thing than the

beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better

than the proud in spirit.

But Saul didn't finish well.

He became filled with pride, went his own

way, and lost his position as king of Israel.

Page 18: 1 samuel 11 don't be defeated

18

The men of Jabesh-gilead were quick to surrender

to Nahash the Ammonite when he came.

Too often Christians are quick to surrender to the

devil, when we are taught to resist him.

We can defeat the devil in our own lives.

We can live life God's Way, and walk in victory,

joy, peace, and contentment.
