Abishai went to the army by night. And there lay Saul sleeping within the

8 Then Abishai said to David, “God has given your enemy into your hand this

day. Now please let me pin him to the earth with one stroke of the spear, and I

10 And David said, “As the Lord lives, the Lord will strike him, or his day will come

to die, or he will go down into battle and perish. (Romans 12:19 “Vengeance is

Mine, I will repay says the Lord.”) 11 The Lord forbid that I should put out my hand

against the Lord's anointed (the office of the king or president or pastor). But

take now the spear that is at his head and the jar of water, and let us go.” 12 So

David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul's head, and they went away.

a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen upon them.

harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have acted

foolishly, and have made a great mistake.” 22 And David answered and said,

“Here is the spear, O king! Let one of the young men come over and take it.

23 The Lord rewards every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness, for the

Lord gave you into my hand today, and I would not put out my hand against the

Lord's anointed. 24 Behold, as your life was precious this day in my sight, so may

my life be precious in the sight of the Lord, and may He deliver me out of all

tribulation.” 25 Then Saul said to David, “Blessed be you, my son David! You will do

A leader says, "Let's go."

David is a true leader.

Jesus, our Greater than David, neither asks us to go where He hasn't gone before

(Hebrews 4:15), nor where He won't go with us.

weaknesses, but One Who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet

without sin.

Sometimes danger comes to us not only from unspiritual enemies like Saul, but

from overzealous friends like Abishai.

David knew Saul was still the anointed instrument in God's hand to work in his

own life.

Therefore, he wisely refused Abishai's offer to kill Saul.

This is a second time, it would seem, God had given David an opportunity to get

rid of his enemy.

But it wasn't an opportunity, it was a test for David to prove whether he would

take things into his own hands or wait upon the Lord.

Anointed:

The value of learning to wait on the Lord.

1 Samuel 16:13a ESV 13a Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers.

When Saul was anointed, it was with a vial of oil (1 Samuel 10:1).

David, on the other hand, was anointed with a horn of oil, a big flask.

Why?

Because oil in the Word is a symbol of the Holy Spirit and David is a picture of the

true Anointed One, the Christos, Jesus, Who would be anointed with the oil of

gladness more than any of His brethren (Hebrews 1:9).

Hebrews 1:9 ESV

You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God,

has anointed You with the oil of gladness beyond Your companions (brothers).

1 Samuel 16:13 ESV 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers.

Notice that Samuel anoints David in the midst of his brethren.

How much did David's father and brothers understand about this anointing?

In view of David's subsequent association with King Saul, perhaps they

interpreted the event as a consecration for David's special service to the king.

Most likely Samuel privately told David that he had been chosen by the Lord to

be the next king.

If so, his behavior while serving Saul was remarkably mature for a young man

who one day would wear the crown.

No doubt it was the assurance of this future hope that helped to keep David

faithful during the ensuing years of trial and persecution.

David had at least two chances to easily kill Saul.

But his trials and testings during those wilderness years helped to build his faith

and develop his godly character and prepare him for the ministry that God had

planned for him.

When David and Jonathan became friends (1 Samuel 18:1) and covenanted to

be faithful to each other (18:3; 20:16), it's certain that David revealed to

Jonathan that he was God's anointed king.

When David became king, he would make Jonathan second in command

(23:16-18).

It's not likely that Jonathan told his paranoid father about David or their

covenant, but somehow Saul discovered that David was his successor (20:30-31)

and tried all the more to kill him.

He expected his men to inform him about David and his whereabouts and Saul

let them know that David was chosen to be the next king (22:6-8).

David will eventually be anointed three times.

The first time was in the presence of his father and his brothers.

The second time is in 2 Samuel 2:4, when he was anointed over the tribe of

Judah.

The third time is in 2 Samuel 5, when he was anointed as king over all Israel.

Sometimes a man will think he's anointed for ministry and his mom will heartily

agree.

A few others might even recognize his anointing—and he'll wonder why

everyone else doesn't see it.

Most likely it's because it's not God’s time.

There is an unfolding of God's plan for a man or woman in service or ministry.

You cannot rush it, anointing is recognized by others in stages.

It doesn't happen quickly.

As it did with David, it comes when you fight battles on behalf of others, when

you gain victory for others by caring for them, standing by them, helping them.

David was an incredible man—a man after God's own heart, unlike anyone the

world had ever seen—yet it took 12 years before his anointing was recognized.

Saul was impatient, David, on the other hand, patiently waited.

So must we wait patiently.

Although Saul doesn’t know it, he’s about to die so this is his epitaph.

What must it feel like to be seventy, eighty, or ninety—headed toward your

eternal destiny—and say, "I've been a fool. I've pursued things I shouldn't have

pursued."

One of the primary messages of the Bible is to teach us to live as though this is

our last day.

That's the beauty of watching for the Lord's coming every day.

Saul goes back to his palace and never sees David again.

He slinks off the pages of Scripture with the summary conclusion: “I have played

the fool. I have erred greatly.”

The first time David had a chance to deal with Saul, he touched the hem of his

garment, and later was convicted.

1 Samuel 24:5-6 ESV 5 And afterward David's heart struck him, because he had cut off a corner of

Saul's robe. 6 He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my

lord, the Lord's anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord's

anointed.”

(Don’t be criticizing the pastor!)

Before this week is over, you'll have an opportunity to lop off a head, to snip a

garment, or to make a comment.

But perhaps the Lord would say to you, "There's a better way."

Our prayer is that the power of the Word being heard and received today will

change us from glory to glory—from a Saul to a David.

The Saul of the OT was a driven man, the Saul of the NT became a called man

(Paul), a changed man, a man who had been transformed! (see Romans 12)

Romans 12:1-2 ESV 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your

bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual

worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal

of your mind (your thinking), that by testing you may discern what is the will of

God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

The Plan of Hope & Salvation

John 3:16 ESV 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes

in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

John 14:6 ESV 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to

the Father except through me.”

Romans 3:23 ESV 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 6:23a ESV 23a For the wages of sin is death,

Death in this life (the first death) is 100%.

Even Jesus, the one who doesn’t deserve death, died in this life to pay the

penalty for our sins.

The death referred to in Romans 6:23a is the second death explained in

Revelation 21:8.

Revelation 21:8 ESV 8 “But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the

sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the

lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Romans 6:23b ESV 23b but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:8 ESV 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for

us.

Revelation 21:7 ESV 7 "The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will

be my son.”

Romans 10:9-10 explains to us how to be conquerors.

Romans 10:9-10 ESV 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your

heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart

one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Romans 10:13 ESV 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
