Richard Feynman graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1939 and obtained perfect marks in maths and physics exams for the graduate school at Princeton University — an unprecedented feat. “At 23 there was no physicist on Earth who could match his exuberant command over the native materials of theoretical science,” writes his biographer James Gleick.

Feynmanism

Who is this curious character?

I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something – Richard Feynman

I can live with doubt and uncertainty and not knowing. I think it’s much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be

wrong – Richard Feynman

The 3CI magic

Curiosity

It is the seed of quest to know something new

Curiosity has a history

We are born curious – become dumb as we grow up

Imagination What is now proved was once only imagined – William Blake.

• Feynman’s main work Quantum Electrodynamics – where only imagination helps.

• Imagination feeds to creativity and curiosity

• Imagination allows you think about “impossible”

• Its human faculty that distinguishes human from other intellectual forms of life

• Imagine is Fun – where you can be yourself

Creativity There is plenty of room at the bottom - Birth of Nano Technology Classic Lecture on Dec 29th 1969 Why cannot we write the entire 24 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica on the head of a pin? Atoms on a small scale behave like nothing on a large scale The problems of chemistry and biology can be greatly helped if our ability to see what we are doing, and to do things on an atomic level, is ultimately developed – a development which I think cannot be avoided.

Courage

• Ability to stand-up with conviction – often against popular belief

• Ability to persist despite of ridicule, rejection and humiliation

• Ability to be humble when proved right

Courage brings about good things created/understood through Curiosity and Imagination…. And of course you need to be creatively courageous

Testing is more like works of …

Take PRIDE in your work as testers !!!!

Feynmanism … In practice

Key takeaway : Three messages …

123

Indulge in divergent/creative thinking exercises to

condition your brain .. Good testing thrives in curious and

imaginative thinking

Think critically about your beliefs and values about testing or anything that is important to you …. More often … deeply

Allow your mind to wander … but watch it - mindfulness
