Don’t Be A Fool!Lk. 12:20 But God said unto

him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall

those things be, which thou hast provided?

I. The Family Dispute!(Lk. 12:13-15)

♦Lk. 12:13-15 Then one from the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." But He said to him, "Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?" And He said to them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses."

What do you think abut this?♦Did the man have a “right” to receive his

part? ♦Would Jesus have been wrong in settling

this dispute?♦If he had a right and Jesus would not

have been wrong, then “why” did He not intervene?

♦“Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions”

Money over the Master!♦Jesus addresses the danger of this in (Mt.

6:1-4, 19-34) who will we serve?♦Do you remember the Rich Young Ruler?

♦Mt 19:22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. (Mk.10:22; Lk.18:23)

♦We are warned about being rich towards self and not in service! (1 Tim. 6:6-10)

♦1Tim. 6:18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate

II. The Farmers Dilemma!(Lk. 12:16-17)

♦Lk. 12:16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. “And he thought within himself, saying, “What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?”

♦How many of us would like to have this problem? How would we respond if we did? This is a better question!

Page 10: Dont be a fool!

We need to understand “why!” Why is this parable given?

♦What does this have to do with the danger of the love of money/ covetousness?

♦The farmer is here forced to make a decision about his abundant harvest!

♦I believe sometime we read verse 16 too fast and miss the point Jesus is seeking for us to see!

Page 11: Dont be a fool!

“Land of a rich man produced”♦Did he need more? More money, more

wealth, or more love for God & others?♦The problem is not to have more, but to

let more keep us from the Master!♦Let’s think back to the brothers, did this

desire for money seem to be having a negative impact on their relationship?

♦His relationship with his brother should have been more important than money!

III. The Fool’s Decision!♦Lk. 12:18-21 "So he said, 'I will do this: I

will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."' "But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?' "So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

Page 13: Dont be a fool!

What concerns us most?♦When this man found himself before the

Master, what was his greatest concern?♦Tell my brother to give me my money!♦When the rich man found that God had

blessed him beyond his imagination, what was his greatest concern?

♦Where am I going to put all of this?♦What is our greatest concern tonight?

♦Will we be found a fool? Or faithful?

Page 14: Dont be a fool!

Conclusion:♦Indeed we do not want to be found a

fool in the eyes of our Master!♦God must come first in our lives!

♦Mt 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

♦Have you come to believe in God? Have you come to trust Him with your life? If not, then night is the night!
