Android L Features

Notifications

• Google has improved notifications. Users will be able to get a full notification appear on the lock screen then either double tap to launch apps or swipe them away.

• Meanwhile, a Heads-Up notification feature allows Android to pop-up unobtrusive alerts when receiving an incoming phone call or message while using an app.

Battery Life

• Android has introduced ‘Project Volta’ to optimise battery life. This will include a new battery saver feature, which it claims will extend battery life by up to 90 mins on existing devices such as the Nexus 5.

• A battery predictor will also tell users exactly how long they have to leave the device plugged in before it is fully charged.

• Android L marks the switch from the Dalvik “just in time” compiler that processes applications on the fly to ART, which provides efficient compiling.

• Google claims by switching to ART, devices will have 2x performance over those running Dalvik.

• Android L will also support ARM, x86 and MIPS as well as 64-bit instructions as standard.

• The new "Material Design" identity is bolder, more colourful, and more animated. Every transition between screens and every user interaction has been refined, down to the system-wide Roboto typeface and the Android navigation buttons.

• Screen elements will be able to simulate depth, with automatic shadows and scaling, but will also inherit elements of classic magazine typography and layout. There's more emphasis on simple shapes and consistent actions that lead you from one app into another.

• For instance on the calculator app, instead of the button just lighting up as you press it, a circular animation emanates from your finger press, much like water rippling in a still pond Or the play button morphing into a pause button and vice-versa, as well as many other detailed and intrinsically unique animators found in Android L.

ART (Android Runtime)• It is an application runtime environment used by

the Android mobile operating system. ART replaces Dalvik, which is the process virtual machine originally used by Android, and performs transformation of the application's byte code into native instructions that are later executed by the device's runtime environment.

• Unlike Dalvik, which since Android 2.2 "Froyo" uses just-in-time (JIT) compilation to compile the byte code every time an application is launched,[ART introduces use of ahead-of-time (AOT) compilation by performing it upon the installation of an application. At the same time, ART brings improvements in performance, garbage collection, applications debugging and profiling.

Google Fit• The Google Fit hub was previewed and this is expected to be

ready for the final release of Android L. The system will gather health data from sensors on mobile devices and wearable as well as other apps.

Keyboard• Google has made a noticeable change to the keyboard by

removing the space between individual letters. The space bar and return icons are more prominent too.

New multi-tasking• The new recent apps section of Android L brings a Google Now

card style layout. The open apps flow on a sort of carousel and can be swiped off to either side to close them as before.
