Windows Operating System

OS - Interface between user and the hardware.

Windows OS developed by Microsoft in 1983.

Graphical User Interface (GUI).

Most widely used OS for Personal Computers (PC).

MS-DOS

Microsoft Disk Operating System.

Single-user OS from Microsoft.

First OS for the PC.

Windows 95/98 and Windows NT built in their own version of DOS to support existing DOS applications.

Windows 1.0 Released in 20th November, 1985. 16 bit graphical operating environment. Displayed ‘tiled’ windows (side by side,

no overlaps). Not a complete operating system

(extended DOS environment). Programs like clock, calculator, paint,

write, reversi, etc. Not so popular.

Windows 2.0 Introduced on 9th December, 1987.

Also 16 bit GUI based operating environment.

Introduced keyboard shortcuts, the “Minimize” and “Maximize” buttons and allowed windows to overlap.

The last version of Windows that could run on a floppy-only system and did not require a hard disk.

Not so popular either.

Windows 3.0 Released on 22nd May, 1990.

Introduced Program Manager and File Manager.

Protected/Enhanced mode to run Windows applications with reduced memory issues.

Introduction of virtual memory allowed multitasking of DOS based software.

Improved interface and gained popularity.

Windows NT

Windows New Technology.

Introduced on 27th July, 1993.

Self contained OS that runs 16-bit and 32-bit windows applications as well as DOS.

DOS not completely removed but loaded briefly as part of the booting process.

Windows 95 Released on 24th August, 1995. 32 bit self contained multitasking operating

system. Introduced the ‘Start’ button and the taskbar and

changed the way a user navigated. Adopted Win32 API also preserved Win16

compatibility. Handled larger memory spaces with FAT32 file

system. Inclusion of Internet Explorer browser with the OS.

Windows 98

Released on 25th June, 1998. Improved power management, network

management and USB support. Added Standby and Hibernate modes. Introduced the Windows Driver Model (WDM) to

manage device drivers. Added address bar in Windows Explorer, image

thumbnails, folder info tips, web view in folders and many other features.

3D Pinball was included.

Windows 2000 Released on 17th February, 2000. Version number Windows NT 5.0. Introduced NTFS (New Technology File

System) 3.0, MMC (Microsoft Management Console), EFS (Encrypting File System), the DirectX 7.0 API etc.

Support for distributed file system, Active Directory.

Layered windows with transparency, transition effects, gradient fills etc and personalized Start menu.

the last NT kernel Windows operating system to lack product activation.

Windows ME

Windows Millennium Edition. Released on 14th September, 2000. Introduced a System Restore feature,

Windows Movie Maker software and networking tools.

Improved power management, faster boot times and suspend/resume operations.

The last DOS- based operating environment(9x series).

Criticized for speed and stability issues, also dubbed by many as ‘Mistake Edition’ or ‘Many Errors’.

Windows XP

Windows eXPerience. Released on 25th October, 2001. First version to use product activation to

reduce software piracy. Improved taskbar, ‘Start’ menu, better

networking features and improved user interfaces.

Improved sorting, searching, System Restore, error reporting and driver reliability.

Built-in CD burning, AutoPlay and updated accessories.

Faster start-up. Longer life than any other versions.

Windows Vista Released on 30th January, 2007. Version number NT 6.0. Introduced Windows Search, Windows Sidebar,

User Account Control and integrated Speech Recognition.

New graphical user interface named Windows Aero.

Shadow Copy automatically creates daily backup copies of files and folders.

Transparent side panel to place Desktop Gadgets.

New security protections and improved web standards.

Faced lots of negative criticism.

Windows 7

Released on 22nd October, 2009.

Version number NT 6.1.

Removed sidebar and overcame many Vista criticisms.

Faster booting, Windows PowerShell, improved window management, touch and handwriting recognition.

Support for virtual hard disks, better multi-core processors performance, and kernel.

Windows 8

Released on 26th October, 2012. Version number NT 6.2. Focused on tablet users, touch-optimized

shell using the "Metro" design, and a new 'Start' screen (no ‘Start’ button).

Faster startup through UEFI integration. Integration of online services (SkyDrive,

Xbox). Support USB 3.0, the Windows Store,

Windows To Go (ability to run from USB drives).

Windows 10

Released on 29th July, 2015.

Kernel number 10

Device dependent interface.

Return of ‘Start’ button.

Cortana, Microsoft Edge, Unified Settings, a virtual desktop system, integration with Windows Phone.
