Advantages

Key take away items

1. Use full suite of AVEVA tools,

including IE&D, AVEVANET

2. Start early in projects to

maximize benefits

3. Produce better quality

engineering with less

engineering effort and reduce

overall TIC

Mid-sized EP based in Calgary

Design specialty: oil & gas facilities

Typical Greenfield Project: $1B+

Execute with comprehensive set of

AVEVA tools since early 2015

Challenge - Issues with Conventional Approach

“Engineering for startup” not practiced by all contractors

Challenge (cont)

Where’s the Best Starting Point for a Digital Asset / Data

Centric Approach?

Conceptual Optimization FEED ExecutionDetailed

Engineering

Challenge (cont)

Multiple contractors are often required in early engineering with

specialty skill sets

Owner hosted, fully integrated

AVEVA product suite

(inc. IE&D & AVEVANET)

Solution

Specific Cost Savings in Conceptual / FEED Engineering

P&IDs Integrated with Line List - Auto Line List Generation

P&IDs Integrated with Instrument Index - Auto Instrument Index Generation

3D Modelling Efficiency

P&ID Integrated with 3D Model – Auto Validation

Plot Plan Integrated with 3D Model

Reduced Piping Stress Cycles

Electrical Cable Schedule Integrated with 3D Model

Ease of Finding Information with AVEVANet

A common misconception

is that a digital asset

approach is too rigorous

and slow for early

engineering.

Experience shows that it

will save 15% and produce

better results

Case – Digital Project Hub for a $1B Refinery Expansion

Owner Operator decided to create Digital Project Hub for the start of FEED (Smart!)

• Full Aveva IE&D suite and AVEVANet

• All contractors will perform work within the owners environment

Conceptual / DBM work was completed using conventional tools

A conversion project was required to populate the data centric digital project hub

In order to avoid delay in the start of FEED, the conversion happened in parallel to DBM

activities

Errors in conventional engineering deliverables caused additional work during correct

• Unmatched OPCs on P&IDs

• 1D deliverables mismatched with 2D deliverables

Lesson Learned

The conversion was completed for a small amount relative to the future savings, but it could

have been avoided by starting with a data centric approach from the outset of engineering

Conclusion - Advantages of Starting Early

1. Create higher quality engineering deliverables at a lower cost early in project cycle

2. Align team on a digital approach

3. Learn lessons before project ramp up

4. Fewer unknowns when creating execution plans

5. Support more cost reduction iterations prior to execution

6. Better reuse of design from FEED to detailed engineering

7. Avoid converting conventional engineering deliverables mid-project
