Wildlife trafficking

Universal Security Threat “As far as history is concerned, we are all well aware that there’s a war going on

between love and hate and mother earth is the battleground”

United States announced $80 million plan  to combat elephant poaching in Africa. All of this is being done, not simply to preserve the lives and ecosystem benefits of

rhinos and elephants, but also because the US now sees wildlife trafficking as a national security threat. Why?

Because poaching and illegal wildlife trafficking is a major source of funding for terrorist groups, including Al-Shabaab.

ILLEGAL TRADEWildlife

What We Have Looked AtThe rapidly escalating illegal trade in wildlife products across Africa is being used to fund civil conflicts and terrorist attacks.

“Terrorism is an anxiety-inspiring method of repeated violent action, employed by (semi-) clandestine individual, group, or state actors, for idiosyncratic, criminal, or political response or gain.”

Poaching TechnologyThe frightening escalation of elephant poaching in recent years is largely due to increasingly sophisticated technology.

Ivory TradeWhat we’re seeing here is the perfect

storm of extinction, poverty and radicalism. We’re seeing the deterioration

of societies and a massive threat to the stability of not only African nations but the

entire world. A crucial step in changing this equation is to ensure that the ivory trade

comes to an end.

PoachersThese days, poachers associated with criminal groups use helicopters, AK-47s, night vision goggles and other tools to find and kill elephants more quickly and to avoid detection.

Facing such high-tech forces, park rangers and guards (who are often unarmed) don’t stand a chance.

Behind the scenes

FundingTerrorists groups in Africa are recruiting extremists from all over the world, with the same goal in mind and these groups generate millions, even billions, to fund these movement through various resources.

The price of rhino horn has increased about 50,000 USD per kg- twice the value of gold and platinum.

Black Market

The black market creates a platform where these terrorist organizations and illegal buyers can trade, wildlife, ivory, drugs and human trafficking. Ivory Trade

With ivory selling at $200 per kilogram, Al-Shabaab could be turning over $600,000 a month, and illegal ivory funds more than 40% of the operations of Al-Shabaab.

Page 6: Veni Vici Safety SA

Africa’s WildlifeIs under siege and pressure from a booming

Asia with an insatiable taste for ivory isn’t helping. Africa’s poverty, weak and corrupt

law enforcements has made the urge to become a poacher even more enticing.

Al-ShabaabSomalia’s Islamic terrorist organization, is just one of the many terrorist groups who’s funds are mostly generated through poaching Rhino horns and Elephant tusks, which is 5 times more valuable than gold, hence they refer to ivory as white gold.

Data also suggest that over the last four years, Al-Shabaab has been deriving a significant part of it’s income from poaching. A source within the militant group said that up to 3 tons of ivory were shipped through Somalian ports every month.

ISISAn estimated $1 million per day is

generated by ISIS.

ISISISIS, (also know as Daesh, ISIL or simply Islamic State) is a Jihadist militant group in Iraq and Syria influenced by the Wahhabi movement.

Al-ShabaabSomalia’s Islamism group Al-Shabaab means the “Youth Movement” and is also known as Ash-Shabaab, Hizbul Shabaab.

Boko HaramNigeria's militant Islamist group Boko Haram - which has caused havoc in Africa's most populous country through a wave of bombings, assassinations and abductions.

LRA | JOSEPH KONY

LRA | Veni Vici Safety (Pty) Ltd 8

Extremist Group

It’s highly likely that Kony, with a small group of LRA, is currently hiding in Kafia Kingi, a Sudanese controlled ‘enclave’ bordering South Sudan and the Central African Republic.

ABDUCTING

The LRA has both militaristic and spiritual elements, and Kony commands the group with cult-like beliefs – the most important being his absolute authority. Abducted girls are repeatedly raped as ‘wives’ of LRA officers, and the boys are forced to become brutal soldiers.

The LRA is a brutal rebel group of abducted soldiers. Much of the core fighting force has been with the group for a decade or more, abducted as children from northern Uganda. They have no clear political motivation, but take advantage of whatever turmoil is affecting central Africa for their own survival. They’re violent, and abduct, murder, and loot their way across the porous borders of central Africa.

SUPPLY CHAINThere is currently a struggle between two very polarized groups of African countries (and their corners) as to how to deal with the problem.

Firstly it is important to identify the three links in the ivory supply chain. These are the poachers, the traffickers and the consumers.

Page 10: Veni Vici Safety SA

DEVASTATIONWildlife tourism is estimated to make up 20-40% of all international tourism; in Africa in particular, it provides a promising economic opportunity for impoverished communities. And when you lose your elephants to poachers, the vast majority of the people — as well as the nation as a whole — don’t benefit.
